Police: At Least 20 Killed As Militants Attack Igbo Town Hall Meeting In Mubi, Adamawa State-AP

By Ibrahim Garba, Njadvara Musa &Jon Gambrell

Police say gunmen from a radical Muslim sect have attacked a town hall in rural northeast Nigeria, shooting at least 20 people dead.

The attack happened around noon Friday in Mubi in Adamawa state, a town near Nigeria's border with Cameroon.

Local police commissioner Ade T. Shinaba said the attack targeted the hall when a group of Nigeria's Igbo people of the southeast were meeting.

Shinaba blamed a radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram for the killing.

The sect, which wants to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, killed at least 510 people last year alone, according to an Associated Press count.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

GOMBE, Nigeria (AP) _ Gunmen attacked a church in northeast Nigeria during a prayer service, spraying the congregation with gunfire and killing at least six people including the pastor's wife.

The assault late Thursday comes just weeks after a radical Muslim sect claimed responsibility for a series of deadly bombings at churches in northern Nigeria.

Gombe state police spokesman Ahmed Muhammad confirmed Friday that six people died following the shootings at the Deeper Life Church in Gombe, and that eight others were wounded.

The oil-rich nation's president recently put regions of the country under a state of emergency due to the threat, but that did not include Gombe.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicion immediately fell on the radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram. The sect has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, a multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for more than 500 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. The group claimed responsibility for an attack that killed at least 42 people in a Christmas Day bombing of a Catholic church near Abuja, as well as a suicide car bombing targeting the U.N. headquarters in the capital that killed 25 people and wounded more than 100.

Nigeria's weak central government has been slow to respond to the sect.

On Dec. 31, President Goodluck Jonathan declared regions of Borno, Niger, Plateau and Yobe states to be under a state of emergency  meaning authorities can make arrests without proof and conduct searches without warrants. He also ordered international borders near Borno and Yobe state to be closed.

However, it remains unclear what effect that will have on a sect that has adopted hit-and-run attacks and suicide bombings to target the country's military and police, as well as civilians.

As 4 me i have observe dat our major problem is because our population is 2 hi 2 b under 1 nation.each tribe should have their own independence if nig.leaders realy need peace 2 raign in this nation.pls lets divide...

Nigeria and Boko Haram

A man is murdered. His family is murdered. His friends are murdered. His neighbors are murdered. And we're still talking? Ok, oh. It will be your church, home or car next.
Those who want peace, go out and make peace. Get up. Go to Gombe or Jos or Abuja, and actually stand between a man with a marchet and the man he's about to kill. Don't talk about it, do it.
Those who want war, go out and take vengeance. Nobody's gonna do it for you.
They say the difference between the Arab Spring or the European Revolutions before it, is that Nigerians are not willing to inconvenience themselves for what they say they believe in. We love to write! And boy can we jist! But how many of you are actually ready to get up tomorrow morning and march out onto the street for what you think is right? No one is going to change this country for you. You have to get up and do it yourself.

Awaking of knight templer

Is like this boko haram want to wake the spirit of knight templer the people who fight in christ name

ATTACKS OF BOKO HARAM ON CHURCHES

The motive of boko haram and their sponsors is becoming clearer. they are sick and tired of living with christians. Let them know that the battle line have drawn by the north simply because they need power by all means. It is time to return them to the desert where they belong. Let them know that the north has a large number of indigenous christians. Let them hire mercenaries from all over the world, the LORD OF HOST will fight for the christians in both north and south. REPENT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND

Fools DON'T KNOW THE COST OF WAR

In as much as we condemn all these senseless killings. You should know that Boko Haram kills both Christians and Muslims, they kill you irrespective of your tribe. You should know these fact. Have you ever experience war? Do you think you and your family may survive the war. Please stop calling for war foolishly. Lets join hand to pray and fight these evil group together.

IS IT BY FORCE TO BECOME A MOSLEM

Can someone remind these imposters (boko haram) that no one has forced them to embrace Western Education? If they don't want western education, they can lock themselves up in a room and burn themselves to death. Our constitution states that everyone has freedom to practise any religion be it Christianity, African Traditional religion (juju worshippers), free thinkers, sat gurumaraji etc.
why do they use western devices such as guns, bombs, communication gadgets etc in fighting?

THIS WAS HOW THE 1ST CIVIL WAR STARTED

I implore everybody to go read the book 'Crises and conflict in Nigeria'. You will have a clear understanding of the impending crises, if nothing is done as fast as possible.

we need war

we the nteje youth are not happy for what is happening, it looks like we, the igbo are fools or we are not capeble of chalenging them.the only way we can stop this is true war,and we are ready for it we just need other from ohaneze ndi ibgo

TIME FOR OGBAKO NDIGBO

MAY ONCE AGAIN RESTATE, THAT THERE IS TIME FOR EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN. THE TIME NOW IS FOR OGBAKO NDIGBO OR GENERAL MOBILIZATION IN IGBO LAND.

JUST A GENERAL MOBILIZATION FOR NOW. IT IS NO LONGER IMPORTANT WHAT THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT US ARE DOING OR WILL DO. I CAN ASSURE ALL THAT CARE TO LISTEN THAT THE IGBOS HAVE EVEN NOW AS I WRITE ONE OF THE BEST WELL TRAINED FIGHTING FORCE IN AFRICA I SAY THIS AS ONE OF THEM. YOU WAIT UNTIL ACTION BEGINS.

Display Coffins at Enugu, Invite World Press to Mourn with Igbo

These southeast governors must organise public burial/mourning sesions for the Igbos slain by Boko Haram. Assemble coffins for all Igbo murdered, call international media to view the burial/mourning sessions. TV images speak louder than words these days. east Timor, south Sudan were freed from their oppressors by the rest of the world. We must not expect the rest of Nigeria to pity us now. Southwest of Nigeria is made up by nearly half with Muslims, so the Boko Haram may never target its people. And unlike the old southeast, most of the people in the southwest may not even be bothered if they are getting Islamised by Boko Haram and its sponsors. So people of the southeast need to let the world know what the exact course of events in Nigeria are. It is not that the Igbo refuses to live with others, it is that the others are ever fearful of the Igbos and killing them or keeping silent while they are being killed.

wake up Biafra

i weep for my people.i lost a friend in this attack.time for my people to rise up and take their destinies in t
heir hands is now.massob, bakassi, ogbunigwe group, aguleri boys...lets all unite and tell these dogs that they are kids in the game.we are taking this batttle to the north.lets do this in honour of ojukwu.Boko haram should get ready for war.we invented ogbunigwe, there is more wher that came from.

IMPLICATIONS OF CHRISTIAN EXODUS FROM THE NORTH.

If the christians must leave the north, abandoning thier hard earned properties and bussinesses,it is only inperative that all sources of income with origin in the christian southern encalve must be stopped from reaching the north,it's as simple as that. This is just common sense, they cannot trauncate and distabilize our lives and still depend on the oil that flows from christians, this must be the first task of any act of self defence from the christian south. The christians and the Igbo inparticular did not ask for trouble,we have been pushed to the wall by the Hausa-Fulani islamic jihadist killers with the tacit and strategic support of the northern ruling elite who promised to make the country ungovernable.

Subsidy and Igbo freinds

@Matts, you are probably not a student of history or you would have realized that it is only in Yoruba land that no organized attempts have never been made and will never be made against the Igbos as a tribe or as a group. there has never been any attempts to attack Igbos for any reason, pogroms, massacres or genocide or bombings. We do not have to go to the rooftops to shout it that we love the Igbos because we know that they are our brothers and sisters and we see everyone as persons instead of as Yorubas, Igbos, Hausas or Fulanis. This is not to say that there are no horrible ethniccally-jaundiced Yorubas just the same way we have them everywhere but this does not mean they are majority.

Why not leave us alone, northerners?

Deri keep on the good work. We need more fearless people like you. It’s only a fool that does not understand the motives of the Muslim north. They will never tolerate a non-Muslim to be their president. It would have been a different story if a Lebanese man was to be the president of Nigeria today. I just wish our politicians will be selfless for once and allow these bunch of Boko haramist foolish northerners to secede. Please, northerners, we southerners are kafirs (unbelievers) leave us alone, go away for good! Turn your region to another Afghanistan for all we care, practise your satanic Sharia. In short, we southerners are tired of eating suya, sell your suya to yourselves. For how long will this injustice continue? Gowon, Danjuma, Obasanjo, in your face, you will never rest in peace for the injustice done to Ndi Igbos. The blood of all Igbo people murdered by these followers of Baal-Allah and his paedophile prophetess Muhammad is on your head.

@ IBRAHIM SA'AD :YOUR SILENCE, UNGOLDEN

HAS THE PUSH COME TO THE SHOVE?? REALLY?? ARE YOU BIDDING FAREWELL TO THE REST OF US - SOUTHERN NIGERIANS, CHRISTIANS AND OTHER NON-MOSLEMS?
THE ULTIMATUM HANDED OUT BY THE HAUSA/FULANI SEPARATISTS/SECESSIONISTS ARROW-HEADS(BOKO HARAM) TO "THE REST OF THEM", TO VACATE THE NORTH OF NIGERIA, SEEMS TO BE GATHERING MOMENTUM(TRAGICALLY) AS "THE STATE OF EMERGENCY" IMPOSED IS FLOPPINGLY AND APPALLINGLY WANING; AND, OF NO EFFECT. IS IT REALLY "BON VOYAGE", FROM YOU?
WELL, WELL; thank you FOR YOUR COMMENTS AND POSTINGS ON "THE SAHARAREPORTERS" WEB PAGE. YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS HAVE BEEN QUITE REVEALING(although, Controversial), THOUGHT-PROVOKING AND LAID-BARE. WE MIGHT STILL BE FILLING-IN OUR COMMENTS FROM THE TWO SIDES OF THE GREAT DIVIDE. HISTORY IS REPLETE WITH REPETITIONS. 1966 TO 1970 ANTECEDENTS STARTED IN THE SAME FASHION AS SEEN TODAY!! MR. SA'AD, COULD THIS MEAN,"BON VOYAGE", FROM YOU?

This time it is not the Igbos versus the rest.

This time it is not the Igbos versus the rest. The South-South, the South-West and the North Central are all under the same threat, the same siege and the same onslaught from the Hausa-Fulani Muslims. They have been victims as well. The Igbos are very naive when it comes to diplomacy. But this is an opportunity to form alliance with the other Nigerians in the other three geographical zones. It will be a BIG MISTAKE to try to go it alone. Even big powers like Great Britain, US and Germany understand the importance of alliance in times of crisis as well as in peace times. The same advice goes to the leaders of the South-West, South-South and North Central. They should together join forces to remove the cancer that had plagued Nigeria for generations.

@A, may almighty God destroy

@A, may almighty God destroy u and ur evil sayings. All what u have said concerning ISLAM were nothing but lies. And insha ALLAH u will get ur reward from the lord of universe(ALLAH). JUST WAIT FOR UR REWARD AND LIVE WITH IT FOR THE REST OF UR LIFE.

Igbo Massacre: A call for home grown solutions!

Why has Ohaneze Ndigbo not spoken up against these MINDLESS killings? Why are governors silent?
Again it is easy to say Igbos in the north should come back home but we know it is easier said than done. What about the native Christians in the north? Where will they pack to?
The TRUTH is the Nigerian security system cannot protect us against Islamic terrorism. Even combined American and Nigerian security forces cannot give us protection against Islamic terrorism. Americans were not beable to do that in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Inviting Foreign powers into this will be DISASTROUS because boko haram will use that as PROPAGANDA to have more recruits for suicide bombings, etc All that is needed to breach peace in a community is for one mad idiot to run out of a room to the streets, open fire and disappear into the neighbourhood.
We must protests for the RIGHT to be able to obtain firearms&receive training for SELF DEFENCE. We are always afraid to try NEW things but we MUST give this a try.

Tundemash and Saad Ibrahim-unto thee we grant nigeria

@Wahala, I wish I had you right in front of me, I would have had you locked up and flogged like a 15yrs old toddler until you repent of your sins against your own people the Igbos. Do you remember what happened to the Igbos who left the North when Akala was beheaded by moslem fanatics in the North? You have been busy chasing Saad Ibrahim for appiontment from the Fulani elites to the detriment of your own ppl. So cannot recall such events. The Igbos left the North in their thousands. Many never made it home. Most died in motor accidents on their way to the south east. The ongoing targetted killings of Igbos by Boko haram should not result in the mass exodus of Igbos. Enjoin your people to raise their voices-hold talks threaten retaliation. And not for you to order Igbos to run into the hands of kidnappers and armed robbers in the south east. 9jas are being slaughtered daily in the North by BH and all some are concerned with is fuel subsidy from the south west.

Yoruba: Move for a divided Nigeria Now! You are the Bridge that

Yoruba, be humane. More than 2.5 million are gone since 1960 and still going. Yoruba is the bridge that binds the Hausa/Fulani to the rest of Nigeria. If Yoruba decides today to say let's go for a Southern Nigeria Republic, Igbos shall not say No. Other tribes in the south shall not say No. Yoruba, your silence is killing innocent people. You all know that the north and south of Nigreria cannot live in peace under one country. Even now that there are oil revenues coming from the lower east of the Niger, the Hausa/Fulani are still murdering people from there. So when oil is gone, it shall be hell fire. Yoruba act now. Be humane, stop this complacency, One Nigeria is a mirage.

you are savage

you must be an outcrasted loom-basted being, who does not regard human life but takes delight in eating human flesh.
I can see that you are really an ignoramus to the core who is a liability to himself and the nation.
most invest in this nation especially in the North are bought about by southerners. and is the same people you are treating with the wave of hand. you are an ungrateful loqoo.
do you think if fitg should break one of you can survived.
you are good for nothing that need be arrested who does not see the nation unity as important.
listen it was Christians in the north that God use in the period of biafra. and am telling if battle line is drawn you will all eat your shit.

A colonial official, Harold Smith, in a London television interview some years ago provided a window into the motives that informed British policies on Nigeria through the period of colonialism to independence. Hear him

We truncated their good plan for their future. I was very sorry for the A.G; it was a great party too much for African standard. We planned to destroy Awolowo and Azikwe, the west and the east and sowed a seed of discord among them. We tricked Azikiwe into accepting to be president having known that Balewa will be the main man with power. Awolowo had to go to jail to cripple his genius plans for a greater Nigeria. If Northern leaders have any agenda in Nigeria at all, sadly it is only for the north, and nothing for Nigeria. The time has come now to see people of intelligent minds with an open and inclusive agenda for all Nigerians in power. people who will really look after Nigeria's large population.her wealth, her potentials, her future

WHY THE YORUBAS CARE ABOUT SUBSIDY

THE ANSWER IS SIMPLY GENERAL OBASANJO MADE SUE THAT 95% OF THE BENEFICIARIES OF THE OIL SUBSIDY ARE HIS VERY KIT AND KIN THE YORUBAS. THEREFORE DO NOT BE AMAZED THAT THE GENOCIDE AGINST THE IGBOS DOES NOT BOTHER THE YORUBAS BUT FUEL SUBSIDY, WHCH WAS WHY THEY FOUGHT AGAINST THE IGBOS IN THE FIRST PLACE. TO MILK AND SUCK THE OIL MONEY OF NIGERIA HAVE BECOME THEIR NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR EGUNJE. WHO ARE THOSE SPONSORING NLC AND THE MEDIA BITZ AGAINST THE OIL SUBSIDY? AGAIN THE ANSWER ARE THE YORUBA OIL BARONS. I HOPE THE IJAWS AND OTHER OIL RICH MINORITIES WILL NOW WAKE UPFROM THEIR DEEP SLEEP, ANY WAY WHO CARES. THE IGBOS ARE NOW ONCE AGAIN ON THEIR WAY TO SELF DETERMINATION. BY THE WAY THE UNITED NATION WILL NOT GIVE US AN INDEPENDENT STATE.

Despite seeing vast land with no human but cattle in the north, we still gave the north 55 million instead of 32 million (in the census). This was to be used to maintain their majority votes and future power bid. The West without Lagos was the most populous in Nigeria at that time but we ignored that. The north was seriously encouraged to go into the military. We believed.. that the south may attend western education,-but future leaders will always come from military background. Their traditional rulers were to be made influential and super human. The northerners were given acceleratcd promotions both in the military and civil service to justify their superiority over the south. Everything was to work against the south

When we assessed Nigeria, this was what we found in the southern region; strength, intelligence, determination to succeed, well established history, complex but focused life style, great hope and aspirations. the East is good in business and technology, the west is good in administration and commerce, law and medicine, but it was a pity we planned our agenda to give power "at all cost" to the northerner. They seemed to be submissive and stupid of a kind. Our mission was accomplished by destroying the opposition at all fronts. The west led in the fight for the independence, and was punished for asking for freedom. They will not rule Nigeria

RE- IGBO KILLINGS.

fellow Nigerians, it beats my imagination on the way we continously fan the ambers of hatred. I strongly believe that some elements stand to gain so much from a religous war, surprising, these guys are winning as reflected by the comments by some of us. We should always listen to the voice of reason. We should not throw caution to the wind. Please no religion sanction killing of any soul.
