Protest Against 'National Summit' At Sheraton Hotel, Lagos

While a group of prominent Nigerians were engaged in heated debates at the Sheraton Hotel Lagos another group of young Nigerians who described themesleves as worried citizens have converged today at the premises of the Sheraton Hotel, Lagos to protest the non-involvement of the people in the purported 'national summit' they claimed was sponsored by the government.

The host hotel, Sheraton, which has a relatively low capacity to accommodate people whose destinies are being determined by the conference, was fenced round by military to prevent uninvited guests  from participating.

The  protesters   condemned the conference and tagged it as an 'unacceptable jamboree', proclaiming that the outcome, like other similar sponsored confabs in the past would have no meaningful outcome.

Chanting solidarity  songs, the protesters said the charade is not people oriented and called for a people oriented Sovereign National Conference that will not take place  in a private hotel put in a public square that will accommodate people who will be able to speak their minds.

Failed Politicians Conference

It really looks like a failed politicains conference to me but do they really mean that we are - at long last - going to have a long overdue SNC. Without any Abacha dilutes or imputes from the NASS?

Going by the faces that showed up and the fact that Abati has not sent out any rebukes to anybody for organizing or attending up to this moment, I am seeng the hand of Jonathan but hearing the voice of Utomi if you get what I mean.

Our fingers are crossed.

jude moray

NOW THAT JUDE HAS LAID THE FOUNDATION OF A SIX GEOPOLITICAL ZONES LET US START FROM THERE. SO JUDE, YOU MUST BELONG TO ONE OF THOSE SIX ZONES THEREFORE I WANT ALL THE SENATORS AND HOUSE MEMBERS FROM YOUR ZONE TO TABLE THE MATTER IN THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY.
DEMOCRACY IS NOT A JOKE NEITHER WAS IT FORCED ON ANY ZONE IN NIGERIA AND SO FAR NO ZONE HAS OPTED OUT FORMALLY. WE WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY SNC OR TALK OR CONFERENCE OF ANY SHADE OCCURRING IN A VACUUM BY UNELECTED REPRESENTATIVES. DONT TELL US THAT OUR DEMOCRACY DOES NOT WORK, MAKE IT WORK IT IS YOUR CHOICE.
I HOPE YOU GET MY POINT NOW.

Aburi, summits and talkatives

Aburi Accord emanated from a confab held by Nigerians and separatist Biafara at the wake of the Nigerian Civil War and internationally mediated. Were it implemented, the War would have been averted, same for the recurring security and religious crises, agitation for resource control and true federalism. The South East will forgive it's 3 million people lost to this genocide called civil war and still counting but the North, the West and South South (now the war booty) must also swallow pride and put Aburi Accord to a vote in referendum. SNC can not produce a more elegant document for Nigeria's unity. Ojukwu I mourn you.

Your point again is what IBRAHIM SAAD?

Your point again is what SAAD? In a union where all the members of the union are not happy with how the union is being run and/or administer, for God’s sack, what other option is better than the idea to sit down and talk. No, you refer to such a call as NOIZZZY. Man, from here on, it is really difficult to argue with you. From your writings, I think that you are in support of Boko haram bombing the rest of us to submission, for their way or the high way. I say no SAAD, it is up to us as individual to choose our own way and, same with boko haram people.

We all know the history of this country. We started this journey from north and south union, to north, east and west union, then to north, east, west and Midwest, to twelve states and to illogical 39 states and then, back to somewhat logical six geo zones. Thus, my own suggest is that we start the meeting with the logical six zones premise, which to me is close to fairness. What is your suggestion SAAD?

Just a little patience

This meeting is the first of it's kind and the organizers said a bigger one will be organized soon. this is just an initiation and I wonder why every one should be invited. well, everything that was discussed today clearly showed that the motive is for a better Nigeria. well, we are all free to organise one and invite whoever we like. we ought to give kudos to prof. pat rather than blaming .

i hope it wont fail

No matter, how well you want define it,there is still need for sovereign national conference to address so many conflicting issue in this country but there is need to put in place every modality that will lead to the success of the conference, however open debate for people to show their grievance in constructive way need to be setup,if not it will fail

RE: Can anyone demistify SNC?

PEOPLE DONT THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE THEY MAKE A STATEMENT. IF WE HAVE SOMETHING THAT WE DONT LIKE WE DONT WASTE TIME THINKING HOW DID WE BRING IT ON OURSELVES, IF WE BRING IT ON OURSELVES, OR HOW CAN WE AVOID BRINGING SOMETHING SIMILAR ON OURSELVES. WE JUST "EMOTE" AND ASK FOR SOMETHING , ANYTHING BUT WHAT WE DO NOT LIKE NOW. THIS HAS BEEN NIGERIAS STORY.
THERE IS NO HOPE THAT THOSE WHO CANT USE THE PRESENT DEMOCRATIC DISPENSATION TO GET SNC OR RESOURCE CONTROL WILL BE ABLE DO MUCH WITH A CHOATIC PROCESS SUCH AS THE SNC. NO WONDER NONE OF THE ADVOCATES IS ABLE TO PUT FORWARD SENSIBLE PROPOSALS AS TO HOW TO GO ABOUT SNC.
IS IT GOING TO BE BASED ON THE SIX GEOPOLITICAL ZONES, STATES, TRIBES, ETHNICITY OR RELIGION? IF THE HAUSA/FULANI, IBO AND YORUBAS ARE MONOLITHIC HOW DO WE INVOLVE THE COUNTLESS OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS THAT ARE NOT? HOW DO WE ACCOMODATE THE DEMANDS OF EACH COMPONENT?

lets talk the talk

we must talk, that seem to be the consensus at the summit today. lets face the fact; if they agree to talk who will represent us? ans; same old people, anennih, clark, olu falae, adamu ciroma. even if we vote same old faces will win the usual pdp style.furthermore they now have some 'paid youths' who have be innuculated with the corruption bug and set to carry on from them. i think the solution is [1] lets first answer the question. must we remain as nigeria or is it possible to go our separate ways peacefully via a confab. [2] who then will answer this question or do the talk, a new generation, thus this same old faces need to die[or become dormant] for our country to move forward. even the bible has it, pharoah must go for israel to move on, king solomon had to sanitization for His kingdom to be established[1kgs2v46]

@stanley igwe and @Deri This is what mend says about you

Mend says:

We have constantly warned Nigerians about Goodluck Jonathan and his train of idiots running Nigeria. Events of the last few months have vindicated our position on the inability of this moron to lead Nigeria anywhere but downwards.

Rather than address serious issues facing the nation and its citizens, Goodluck Jonathan squanders public funds on tribalistic sycophants and thugs calling themselves ex-militants.

Nigerians should disregard the idle threats and ranting of imaginary militant groups and other hired “Jonathan praise singers”. Besides empty talk, they are unable to help Jonathan in any way. In fact most so called ex-militants are hiding in Abuja or Lagos, not venturing near their villages in the Niger Delta.

Our silence thus far, has been strategic and at the right time, we will reduce Nigerian oil production to zero and drive off our land, thieving oil companies.

Can anyone demistify SNC?

SNC used to be propaganda of NADECO during military era; now that we are in a democracy, the call has lost its salt. Why can’t we just respect our own votes and give our democracy its right to live and thrive? Can the organizers of SNC tell the world that our democracy is genuinely a fluke? Do the speakers represent Nigerians? No! Are they speaking for anyone? No! Were they elected to speak for anyone? No! I think these guys should be ashamed of their acts... thank God they are confused already - everybody just repeated the same thing - the focus was so poor and irrelevant.

The bottom line is this: if SNC is to represent Nigeria's ethnic diversity, who will appoint the attendees? Governors, kings, thru an election or these unbridled jobbers will self-select themselves again? Can the organizers clarify these? Nigerian masses have fought dignifiedly for democracy. Let it be our basis of national debate - not this Utomi Boko 'debate' of self serving 'elites' begging for relevance.

Stanley Igwe, Tunde Bakare is obviously your nemesis!

In psychology and some aspects of medicine, Social Phobia Disorder is a term used in describing certain chronically insecure persons who always talk about their deepest fears without knowing it. They think by talking constantly about their fears those fears will go away. But the fears won't except they submit themselves for appropriate therapy. Stanley Igwe and his sick ilk cannot make a comment on this progressive forum without throwing in Tunde Bakare's name, however unrelated the topic is. Unfortunately, you only succeed in revealing the morbid fear in your heart and in those of your paid pipers, of the rising relevance of the likes of fearless, honest, incorruptible and no-nonsense statesmen like Bakare in national politics.

Confused Protesters

I personally think the protesters are saboteurs or a bunch misguided, and discredited jobbers. I also think its a smear campaign to say FG was the sponsors of the meeting. We all know the organizers and participants and their antecedents; these are people who have been canvassing for national confab for years. They even explained that what they are doing was to prepare the ground as well as articulate items and modalities for a larger national confab, the type that will have larger representation with govt backing. They also made it clear that if government continues to shy away from organizing a national confab they would continue to hold this type of sensitization dialogue.Anybody who have followed the history and socio-economic and political devpt of Nigeria will support a national dialogue to discuss Nigeria and suggest fundamental changes that would help foster unity, national integration, economic growth and boko-haramless society.

@ peter

Its a big shame reading such write up from a nigerian,i guess you are one of those thieves we are talking about, are you saying it is ideal to organise such meeting in a private hotel like sheraton,i am very sure you have never had the opportunity of travelling out of your country to know how poor our country is,please wise up and lets fight for our future.

SOME MISGUIDED NIGERIANS CAN RUN THEIR MOUTH

The Nigeria Summit Group is a private initiative under chairmanship of Prof. Pat. Utomi and from what I have seen on LTV and Channels TV, I do not see how eminent Nigerians like Prof. Ben Nwabueze, Ganiyat Fawehimmi, Femi Falana, Balarabe Musa, Mallam Shehu Sanni and representative of youths etc. cannot be an arrangement of the Federal Govenment. From my understanding, the motive of the submit is to educate and senstise majority of Nigerians toward accepting a Sovereign National Conference. So, these misguided protesters should save their energy towards something profitable and meaningful.

Pat Utomi????

Prof. Pat tactically stood-down for GEJ his Niger delta corrupt brother(Not Shekarau as he made people believed) in the last election. He doest not have any morally justification to discuss anything meanful on behalf of Nigerians. As a matter of fact, the summit is an exercise in futility

Said it time without numbers now the solution is there with U!

[Chanting solidarity songs, the protesters said the charade is not people oriented and called for a people oriented Sovereign National Conference that will not take place in a private hotel put in a public square that will accommodate people ... to speak their minds.]

I said it much earlier; They left undone what they ought to have done for us and went & did what they ought not to have done, aggrandizing themselves in the wake (became too wealthy @ out peril) and there is no health in them now, miserable offenders today in Nigeria! I have asked them to carry out the amendment of the Constitution returning back to the Old Book from where they changed a lot of things! In the absence of Federated State because of obvious difficulties which U cannot see now - latent, to consider my ‘zoning formula, revenue allocation & proportional representation’ that it will solve the problem of Nigeria in the same way Option A-4 has done if only they will considering D issues now in good faith!

Whether Northerner, Southerner, Muslim or Christian

Nigerian leaders are the same corrupt and selfish people no matter where they come from or the religion they believe in. We Nigerians should forget our differences and love each other by co-operating together to fight our corrupt leaders. We will not advance as a natioin if we continue to hate each other on grounds of our differences.

The case of Nigerian leaders

The case of Nigerian leaders is like that of proverbial ostrich who buries his head in shallow sands. He then to his friend that with this, no one can see him as he is safe with his head in the sands.

Jonathan is not ready to learn from the failure of past leaders. He will end up being the worst president ever in Nigeria's history, worse than Sanni Abacha.

Stanley Igwe, Tunde Bakare is obviously your nemesis!

jibiti conference by Utomi and co

The so-called summit is fully bankrolled by JEG.it arose from a proposal written by Wale Okunniyi and taken to the villa by Utomi and Tony Uranta. There was a big row as Uranta and Okunniyi openly fought in Braitwaite house as Uranta said he would only give him N500k out of the money. It was after they resolved their "revenue allocation" that the conference which was put off indefinitely in Jan was refixed. All rooms in Sherston and Rennsisance Hotels were fully booked for the summit.Even delegates who live in Lagos were offered accommodation in Shraton Hotels with generous honorarium for delegates..These are bloody jobbers for JEG!

Their right

It is their right to protest and should be free to express it without fear. As for me if it involves Balarabe Musa I will go to bed as a common man with both eyes closed because he is trusted talakawa defender.

However in my own opinion doom is that country that keeps its younger generation in contempt. It appears to me that the average age of the roll call at that meeting is higher than the life expectancy of even a female Nigerian.

Get the youth involved in the talk too, they are the leaders of tomorrow according to you or is that meant to be a deceit?

nonsensical talkshop

I watched as the speakers took turns to repeat the same things we have been saying all these years. I asked myself hoe repeating our problems in a sponsored talk shop will bring solution then I remembered that Uranta an Ijaw man is only being settled by his Ijaw brother President by keeping him busy with such nonsensical talkshops since he has no other job to do. Kudos to the protesters.

Traitors of d State

This is why nothing works in Nigeria. How can the govt just go about a national summit without involving at least a representative of each of the 240 languages and 777+ ethnic groups.... This is why corruption Prevails in Nigeria... This is why energy wil remain stilborne, this is why national security is in comatoes, this is why nigerians can never gets to their happy valley. However this is the very reason the movement forthe actualisation of the sovereign state of niger Delta MASSOND wil succeed.... For 52years this nation'Nigeria has been afflicted by hear every, see every, talk every, promise every but do nothing Governments... We as a people must undertake the responsibility to drive away from our sacred Nation those who profane it... It is ticking.....

MASSOND

I am very surprised at the

I am very surprised at the waste of time and responses of these so called protesters. If they are aggrived, why don't they go and form their own forum. Besides was PU given any Nigeria money to organise this meeting. Everyone of us-Nigerians- should in our own way do something to help save this country, not dragging others down or trying to sabotage the efforts of others who are trying to help bring out the truth.

As far as l am concerned, these people are noise makers.

Niger Delta Militants Bomb Lawfab hotel in Delta state

Tension in Osubi Delta State as Niger Delta Militants bomb Lawfab Hotel near Warri .But no casualties .

GO FOR IT BOYS. WE SUPPORT YOU

What puzzles me is how Nigerians like to wallow in ignorance. I don’t think anyone had looked at Aburri Accord and Ojukwu’s role to work out what was arguably the best arrangement for a peaceful coexisting One Nigeria. The cheap and easy propaganda is to label Ojukwu as anti-One Nigeria YET aBURRI ACCORD WAS FOR oNE nIGERIA. Ignorant Obasanjo will tell us he fought for One Nigeria, Gowon will tell us he was happy Ojukwu died a Nigerian as if he (Gowon) is Father Nigeria. But what they fought was synonymous to fighting to keep slavery alive. These so called leaders should henceforth hide their heads in shame and NEVER go about posturing as if the ever loved this country more than the rest of us. They were nothing but Zombees in the army doing what they were ordered to do. Ojukwu wore the same uniform but had a sharper mind and audacity not to be a Zombee too.

Some Nigerians need to be

Some Nigerians need to be properly oriented. I wonder how every individual can be allowed talk in this situation.

Who are these protesters ?

National summit Group was the initiation of Prof Pat Utomi and other well meaning Nigerians and do not have anything to do with the govt.Prof Ben Nwabueze,Olu Falae,Fani Kayode,Dr. Frederick Fashenu,Chief Audu Ogbeh Etc. are all there. The ignorance on the part of some of these present day protesters is worrisome, the organizers of these meeting have been advertising this meeting for quite a long time now, and yet these 8 protesters from God knows where, still carry their cardboard to embarrass themselves in the name of protest. But am wondering aloud though why Tunde Bakare was not invited, is he not among the eminent and wise citizens that prof Utomi said were invited, just asking.
