Protest For Pensioners To Go On, But NLC Deserts Plan Following Meeting With FG

Wednesday’s scheduled solidarity protest by the Labour and Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) in support of pensioners who are owed about one N1 trillion in outstanding arrears will go ahead.

But the Nigeria Labour Movement will not be in it, following an announcement by the NLC president, Abdulwaheed Omar, that the Central Working Committee had met with Federal Government and obtained a promise that their demands would be met this month.

LASCO had announced that April 10 would be dedicated to a mass protest, in Abuja and Lagos, against the continuing deprivation of the entitlements of pensioners.

Despite the withdrawal of the NLC, its civil society counterparts in LASCO say they will continue with the original plan.

Abiodun Aremu, Secretary of the Joint Action Front [JAF], which is part of LASCO, told a Saharareporters correspondent, “They [FG] met with the NLC [which] gave its promise, but that does not cover those in the States, for example the pensioners of Lagos State are not covered in that Federal Government’s promise.”

In view of the latest developments, the planned protest, which was to have been held simultaneously in Abuja and Lagos, may now hold only in Lagos, led by civil society organizations.

In the announcement, Mr. Omar threatened that the protest will resume only if the Federal Government fails to deliver on its promise by the end of April.
It would be recalled that the January 2012 Occupy Nigeria mass protest was pre-empted after leaders of the Labour Movement met with officials of the Federal Government.
