Senegalese Authorities Impound Arik Airline Plane

Arik aircraft
By SaharaReporters, New York

SaharaReporters has learnt that aviation authorities in Dakar, Senegal yesterday impounded an aircraft belonging to debt-plagued, Nigerian-based private airline, Arik Airline.

A source in Senegal's Directorate of Civil Aviation disclosed that they decided to seize aircraft belonging to Arik after the airline defaulted on earlier agreements to pay up landing fees that had accumulated for two years.

The Senegalese authorities stopped and impounded the plane moments before it was to take off for 2:00 PM yesterday enroute to Lagos. One of the passengers revealed that the aircraft was impounded along with passengers’ luggage that was already loaded on the plane.

Following the action, Arik left its Nigeria-bound passengers stranded at the airport. Some of the passengers told SaharaReporters that Arik officials had not explained or apologized to them and did not provide them with alternative means of leaving Dakar. The passenger also stated that a seriously ill passenger is among several passengers who have been abandoned to their fate in Senegal with no immediate hope of departure.

Arik Airline, a relatively new start-up airline, has been dogged by controversy since its incorporation. The airline, which began with a questionable source of start-up capital, is notorious for its terrible in-flight service, making it one of the least rated international carriers operating in Nigeria. It is believed that a few former office holders close to former President Olusegun Obasanjo floated the company – using fronts.

The airline also has a history of defaulting on service fees. It recently lost one of its aircraft in South Africa as the airline failed to service its lease loans. The airline owes Nigerian civil aviation authorities some N2 billion in unpaid fees.

ongoing gaulibility

No customer services training for their staff, their web site is rubbish, extremely unprofessional, why did they purchase new aircrafts? BA and other foreign airlines with history of business refused to do this, guess what, you can buy new Aircraft for all you like, you service remains poor and your debt will keep mounting, what they should have done is buy/lease good old aircrafts and reduce their fares in order to compete with others who have gained ground in the industry, they could have started as low cost airlines, but NO, they went to buy new aircraft because of fraudulent shareholders who do nothing but show off with stolen fund.

on Gailible Nigerians

Do you know how many children i have seen on the street of Lagos without shoes, i have visited loads of schools without good class rooms, hospitals without beds, bad roads, insecurity in the country and no electricity, without mentioning transportation. Are you saying these animals cannot invest in infrastructures? When Aruk first started their irresponsible business, I knew they are doomed to fail, why would any Organisation start with such heavy liability?

Still on gaulible Nigerians

On the issue of stolen money being re-invested back to Nigeria, the question is; why are ordinary Nigerians are not given part of Arik shares, at least we can then say it is own by tax payers, also, do we have to thank the dumbos for wasting our money (stolen as claimed) on an investment they know nothing about?, why are we so stupid? We must now thank people for stealing our money and putting their family and girl friends on a first class flight to every part of the world?

Sahara welldone

On the issue of Sahra reporters being unprofessional, you guys must be out of your mind, i never liked most Nigerian newspapers because of their favourism to these corrupt politicians, they are as stupid and guilty as the people they covering up, most especially the owner of 'This day' Nduka or whatever his name is, when i first started reading Sahra reporters which was during Yaradua saga, i was wondering if these guys were real, i have read stories on this site severally when they have exposed the people who our so called journalist are hiding, the guy who set this up was one of the guys we fought together during Nigeria crisis (i later found out), stop rubbishing them because I’m sure you guys are either part of failed Arik or family members of corrupt politicians, keep going SR, i will be making my donation soon to you guys, good job.

Gaulible Nigerians

I have read every comments in relative to Arik Air and amased at the way people think and respond to situation like this, first and foremost, i will never fly any African Airline, even if their aircrafts are faster than concord, Nigerian Firms, not only Arik, lack good customer service, sometimes i wonder where these educated and well travelled Nigerians are or do they only exist on papers, they don't have respect for customers, they walk around as if they are doing you a favour by doing their jobs.

Leave Arik Airline Alone

Arik Airline is being patriotic enough.Look at the number of Nigerians in their employ.Even if they stole the money they are ploughing it back into the society.Others stole money and used cronies to starch them abroad with nothing to show in Nigeria.Look at all the former govs they all opted to go to senate in order to continue their loot by asking for jumbo pay.Can anybody point at what they did with the money they stole when they were chief executives of their states?bUT I bet you if a Senegalese Airline were to owe Nigerian govt. no one could stop them from operating since they had boarded pax. They should have routed thir complaints through the foreign office instead of resorting to brigandry.Pls Arik always pay your bills period.

Another sponsored report from SR

Another unprofessional report by SR. This is a story that Sahara just cooked up like others to malign Arik. While Arik might have their issues, I expect SR to be professional enough when writing reports like this to look at all sides of the story. No interview of Senegalese aviation authorities, no passenger was interviewed, no attempt to hear Arik's side of the story. They just wrote a sentimental piece here to appeal to the emotion of Nigerians. It's a shame. Sahara Reporters as as unprofessional as Arik in the quality of what they do. It's just another case of pot calling kettle black. Is there one Nigerian airline without it's issues? What is so particu
Aryl bad about Arik other than that someone paid for this report to be aired? When we ruin all our airlines, we will be the ones to travel by road with all it's hazards, or worse still crash with them. I am dissappointed at SR. You guys need to change your ways or you will soon go the way of News of the world.

Una na big mumu, HOW MANY

Una na big mumu, HOW MANY TIMES HAVE POLITICIANS STOLEN MONEY AND HAVEN GIVEN ANYTHING BACK BUT MORE PAIN. ARIK IS GIVING SOMETHING BACK, JOBS, TRANSPORTATION, AND EVEN A BOOST TO THE ECONOMY. AND EVEN THE PROBABILITY OF GOOD PUBLICITY. SAHARA AND A THE BUNCH OF MORONS HERE ARE BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE. HEATERS

Beware Arik!

With the way things are going with Arik, the end seems to be in sight. When Nigeria Airways began to have serious problems, it was the seizure of their planes that made people to know the intensity of their problems. A couple more of seizures and then you get chaos. If Arik are owing, they should pay up. In Nigeria they seem to be untouchable. Let them not pay in London, BAA, BA and virgin will suffocate them and wipe out their competition, ask Nigeria Airways.

The only reason that some

The only reason that some commentators claimed it's the best London - Lagos route is their generous baggage allowance of 30kg. Remove that and customers will leave en masse. Their well known archille heels is the 9ja factor.

Arik d best

Coming 2 9ja Arik remains one of the best if not d Best

Just flew with Arik from

Just flew with Arik from London yesterday and I had a very good experience. Happy to fly with them again.

Someone says Govt should

Someone says Govt should intervene. Poor funds in an organisation with poor corporate governance practice? The government should only intervene by nationalizing this airline. This is because of the social implications of liquidating it otherwise I would have said it be liquidated. Run it for some years and then privatize it to the Workers and the Nigerian people. By then we can have genuine entrepreneurs to manage it and not these criminals that have crowded out the good ones from the

Most Nigerians are trully

Most Nigerians are trully ignorant as the tundemash put it. Patriotism? Where was the patriotism when they were stealing money for health care to set up Arik? What is the patriotism in bundling the NIPP project through Arumeni's Rockson engineering. Where was the patriotism in Arumeni when he loaned depositors funds in our banks and then refuse to pay back. Do you realize how many have been sent to the grave because of the frauds perpetuated in those banks. A branch manager in one of the Intercontinental Banks once told me of how this guy applied for an overdraft facility. The credit had not been approved at the HQ but Arumeni had forcefully withdrawn 80% of the funds at the branch. Who is the branch head to complain? Today we are all bearing the consequences of the fraud perpetuated by these guys in the Banks. business space.

Idiot like you. Brainless

Idiot like you. Brainless brat

People who make comments like

People who make comments like this are brainless! How can you attack innocent passengers because of the flaws of a company. You're such an idiot for your comment!

Not so bad

Well, if Arik is such a bad airline as you say, how is it possible it became the largest airline in Nigeria in such a short while? Arik managed to open routes to UK and US too. This is a great achievement and it makes us Nigerians proud I think. No company in the world is ever able to satisfy all its customers. There’s always someone complaining (some people seem to live only to complain about everything). Arik may have issues managing their finances, but it still gives Nigerians the possibility to travel locally and lots of jobs. A foreign airline would just take the passengers, so would you really like to see Arik go bankrupt?

Stolen Money

Even new borns in naija knows that Odili, OBJ, IMoke and co, stole money meant for electricity and used the money to float Arik with pot bellied Aruremen as front...Its like trying to do legit business after a successful 419 hit...Maybe his son Gov Rotimi Amaechi will start train transport business after his own looting...Life goes on in naija..Nothing dey happen

Oyibo mentality

Yes, you'll stick to Virgin and BA because they are run by white men (oyibo). How many Nigerians are employed by Virgin or BA? They collect our money and off they go-capital flight. Yet we are not supporting our own airline. Those foreign airlines are not the saints you take them to be. I beg, lets stop condeming Arik, the airline need all our support.

Arik na crook

Arik Oga na thief. Chief crook and armed robber. The man don dey do this kin wayo wayo since him days for Negris Ltd. Na Rivers state money dem thief to take start Airk plus Power project wen no get head until tomorrow. Way de Electricity way Odili and Obasanjo promise Nigeria. Them all be share holders for Arik. No problem, The man or him children go meet judgement Day soon.

Nigerians are always quick to

Nigerians are always quick to condemn, even with the fact that human being are insatiable. Arik is trying even with the criticism it is subjected to... why not try support and not critcize it...Embrace good things snd support our own airline.

Quite unfortunate that

Quite unfortunate that Nigerians do not embrace good things , rather they prefer tarnishing each others image. when are we going to come to terms that we need support our own airline..(ARIK AIR).WE REALLY DO NEED A CHANGE...Arik is trying. support the course.

Is Arik the only Nigeria airline

Arik, Arik every time, is Arik the only airline in Nigeria. You people have never seen anything good in the airline, yet your brothers and sisters earn thier living working there. Please, lets emcourage this airline which has changed the face of aviation industry in Nigeria.

Nigerians are never patriotic

Why are we like this in Nigeria. Istead of speaking with one voice to condemn the Senegalese authorities, we are pouring invectives on Arik. How many times have we detained a foreign plane in Nigeria? We condemn Arik for not paying salaries, now the airlines is not owing our brothers and sisters who work there, yet we still talk bad about the airline. How many of us can set up a comopany to employ almost 3,000 Nigerians as Arumemi has done. For God's sake, lets support one another in growing our economy.

You are certain to show who

You are certain to show who you are and what you are made of.

Those who blame 'Nigerians' for the sins of Arik Air are living in a dream land. Arik Air is the brainchild of Obasanjo and his gang of thugs, and they bought the company with the blood money they pillaged from the oil money from Niger Delta.

Your injustices, wickedness, and satanic murders WILL never go unpunished. I warned you more than 10 years ago, but you did not listen.

God have mercy

As much as i would like to travel through nigerian plane from my london base,i keep on been let down with the attitude of nuisance that call themselves Arik Management team, just a few days ago i decide to visit their site and book a flight to Nigeria. However,i bet i would rather stick to my Virgin Atlantic, they know exactly the essences of good customer care but as for Arik with the first hand information am getting now, they still need to go to the drawing board am have a good map road on how well to run a business globally. I now see why the Nigeria Airways die a natural death. A lesson here for everyone,we can never build a house on "SANDY GROUND" i.e with a corrupt no matter how strong it seems it would surely collapse. I love my country Nigeria,And God bless Nigeria.

arik air!arik air!! arik air!!!

I am now coming to terms with the fact that this company of Arik was floated by those at the helm of things when OBJ was in power including himself(OBJ)WITH THE MASSES FUND.Now that they have raked the masses in terms of evading tax and using what was provided by the tax payers money without paying for it; are now taking style to withdraw their loot from the company and run away.Special care should be taken to recover the tax payers money from these people as you know their god father OBJ is always there to protect them with his usual style. Why should Government protect them when they are not meeting their obligation at home and are feeling above the law.
