Soyinka Calls for ‘Immediate and Unconditional Removal’ of Soldiers From Lagos Streets

Prof. Wole Soyinka on SaharaTV
By SaharaReporters, New York

Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has described as a “gross betrayal,” the flooding of the streets of Lagos with armed soldiers.

In a strong statement just released, he asked:  “Was it part of the deal reached by the government of Goodluck Jonathan, Labour Movement and Civil Society, that soldiers would be sent to occupy Lagos and intimidate the populace?”

He described the action as a gross violation of the rights of citizens to congregate and give expression to whatever grievances bedevil their existence.

“Until [the soldiers] are removed, Nigerians as a whole should understand that the present civic action is not over and prepare to mobilize and defend their liberty,” he said, calling the summoning of armed troops to the streets to confront unarmed civilians an intolerable act of provocation that has taken underhand advantage of the willingness of the people to negotiate and give the government a breathing space.

Stressed Professor Soyinka, “Lagos is no hotbed of BOKO HARAM, nor is it the state of this very incumbent president where leaders and comrades for whom we have the deepest respect, and with whom we still share common cause, have called openly for secession of their part of the nation and called upon others to join them. Lagos is not where heavily armed vigilantes have taken over oil wells.

Clearly these forms of freedom of expression, even of the armed kind, are in order, since Goodluck Jonathan has not seen it as the duty of his office to invade such territories. The occupation of Lagos does no credit to this regime and must be reversed. The kindest that can be said of it is that it is an aberration produced by too many long hours of negotiation, resulting in an unclear and befogged mind.”

Hi, my sister recommended

Hi, my sister recommended this blog. I like what I see so far, but I will have to check back a few more times before I put it in my daily bloglist.

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka's believability is immutable. Soyinka is a god whose lofty throne sits in the hearts of countless millions of Nigerians and he will remain so for posterity just like the Bard of Stradford upon Avon, Williams Shakespeare whose voice will be heard till the end of Time. Wole Soyinka's believability will remain immutable!

A bit surprised it seems to spilme and yet useful.

Good day Akin! It is interesting to know that, in as much as i appreciate your comment, I lack the courage to regard anyone who calls any person a dunce as being better. I am not from niger-delta, but i was seriously taught that, notwithstanding the offence, an elder should be accorded some respect. Mr. Akin, I am very much sure that you can critize a policy that does not augur well with the common citizens without making an inflammable incursion into the person of he from whom the policy comes. Therefore, i expect you to rephrase your comment to, at least, inform a sense of dignity in our leader and even in your own person.
Thank you!

Re: Wild Wild Yoruba .....

Oruko re lon'ro e. (You are drunk with whiskey). The Yoruba nation is wise and do not take commands from fools. We will not seccede from Nigeria, and no army, no matter it's strength can conquer us.

Deri & Otile .... tell GEJ he is riding on the back of a tiger !

I have canvassed several times on this forum that the problem we face in Nigeia is wrestling power from the ex-khaki men in babarigas and their surrogates. What we have in place is a sham of democracy or "militarised democracy".

We have never conducted any election without the use of the military to intimidate the opposition. Is this democracy? What we have in place in several parts of the country is pseudo military government with the president and governors behaving like military dictators.

Let those supporting the use of the military now not come back to shed crocodile tears when the military takes over the government. The cock is the one now inviting the fox to feel its comb if it's real fire. Very soon, the cock will end up in the belly of the fox. Deri & Otile, tell your master ... he ie riding on the back of a tiger.

ijaw & senselessness

When d cabal held GEJ hostage as if he was an house-help yet he was suppose to be d vice president d hollow ijaw talkertives cud not do anything but for d save nigeria group of Tunde Bakare dat people like Wole Soyinka participated in dat demostrated to free him from the prison of Yar'Adua's cabal. Now d senseless illiterates from ijaw extraction are crying ethnic thing when all they could present is a dunce called GEJ. Go & do a rethink & u will know dat d only tribe dat cares not about who is president but will always speak the truth is d yorubas. When Obasanjo was misbehaving the yorubas were against him but the ijaw were cringing b4 him. Go & ask ur GEJ he was always postrating full lenght to Obasanjo dat was why he [OBJ] gave the VP to him.

Elrufai/Fashola fpr greater Nigeria 2015!!!

Elrufai/Fashola fpr greater Nigeria 2015!!!

Oga Wole, you have been silent for too long

You have been silent for too long and your opinion is worthless at this point. Shebi you blindly supported Badluck Egbere Jonathan and i suspect you have been compromised.

I have been watching you since 2009 on the state of the nation and your recent interview in London gave me another side of you and i must say it is a great disappointment reading such tribal comment from you. God will catch many of the fake Yorubas very soon

***READ****

Obasanjo to Chief Clark: “Chief Clark, do you know that it takes N250 million a year to maintain a senator?
“Look, I have warned them,” and he was pointing to the two of them(one Senator Bajomo from Ogun State and another from Rivers State)
saying “that when the trouble starts, all of them would be killed!”

The Yoruba Man, Our Enemy Number One

They fear too much - they are already under their beds with the mere sight of tanks and soldiers. We all know that their middle name start with greed and ends with loot. The Yoruba man has stolen so much from Nigeria. Mention one Federal owned building or company that Obasenjo didn’t sell to his kinsmen. Even that little rat, Bankole bought the Nitel building. In fact, they are the ones benefiting from the subsidy, that is why they are so furious with Jonathan and doing what they know best, make noise. Let me tell you, this government is bound to seal those loopholes and then ask you to return those loots. Greed.

funny how they can send the

funny how they can send the soldiers out against the civilians but not against militants

WILD, WILD, YORUBA; EPICENTER OF ANARCHY

YORUBA People are NOTORIOUS for Chaos and Brigandage. AGBERO Originated from YORUBA and Continues in YORUBA LAND. More Soldiers should be drafted to Ogun State, Ekiti State, Oyo State(grand lodge of PENKELEMESI) Osun State, Ondo State, and more soldiers to Otta(focal point of ANARCHY, BEDLAM and SEXUAL ORGIES).

well said

well said Emeka buh u definitely need to realise that no one is deploying sodiers to the east neither to the west but to the core north states where their incapable government has seen nothing bad in the act of man slaughter going on.And as for Fashola, decisions that was taken at the consultative forum,if u listened to the very well was not between the governors and labour rather an avaricious senate president who in july1,1990 said communication is meant for dick harry and tom, whose convergence on the issue of fuel subsidy was regarded as expression of opinion which goes goes along way to tell u more about our dear president.
Well,my submission about this is let's analyse this issue for learning purpose leaving our differences and express ourselves without the use of abusive words.

Let go off it...

Let's set our priorities right. There is nothing wrong with Soyinka's daughter been whatever she wants to be. Let call a spade a spade. Our children can be anything they care to be if we give them all that we can as parents. God bless Nigeria.

LET US WATCH OUR TONGUE

PROF. PLEASE WATCH YOUR WORD. AS ELDER STATEMAM YOU HAVE TO MIND YOUR WORD. ACTUALLY THE SCENE MAY LOOK WORRYSOME BUT ONE STILL HAS TO BE CAREFUL IN SOME STATEMENT THAT CAN WORSEN THE SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY. MANY YOUTH LOOK UP TO YOU. BEING ACTIVIST IS OK NOT FOR HIGHLY RESPECTED PEOPLE LIKE YOU SO THAT WHEN THE TIDES TURN THE OTHER WAY NO ONE WILL LOOK AT YOU AS A MAN WITHOUT FORSIGHT.

Ibadan oni Baje

Lagos was built as federal Nigeria capital with oil money from eastern nigeria. But now Yorubas have moved their tribal capital from Ibadan(now
a rotten edifice)to Lagos which they regard as exclusively theirs.

Nigerian govt must conduct an urgent audit of who built what in Lagos and how. The Yorubas must be presented with a bill to settle other tribes so that they can go and start their own Lagos elsewhere in thir nhomelands.

Unless that is done Soyinka and co are wasting their time. Why didnt Soyinka protest when nigerian soldiers were deployed to Enugu, Port Harcourt etc? Yeye tribalist!

@King Jaja of Opobo

you are a very stupid man indeed! Your types are bt mere vagabonds. Have you been to Niger Delta throughout your useless life time.
Do you think Niger Deltans are holigans like your type?
Please be careful.

Re:Stupid Ijaw and Niger Delta People

Do you see what you vomit from your smelling mouth after much Kanja?
Do you see what the substance abuse can cause to your monkey brain?
I know SR has provided free-for-all platform for brainless people like you to scipple nonsense on the web as an alternative to ease your joblessness tension. For your information again, GoodLuck Jonathan through the Petroleum Ministry will sign the Petroleum Bill into Law and all your thieves brothers from the Yoruba land who stole Billions of dollars from the Niger Delta oil money will face the music. Then, we would know the real enemies of this tatterd Nation called Nigeria.Mind you, do not irritate the peace loving Niger Delta but cheated people any more!

Who is Soyinka to give orders?

you make sense my brother Keneth. who is soyinka to gives orders to Jonathan? na wa oo! i think this country is filled with mad people, mad ideas and mad results. people have taken advantage of Jonathans mild disposition to open mouth and talk rubbish(bakare, soyinka et al). They should not mistake a Tigers gentle strides for weakness.

GEJ will succeed. Nigeria will progress. Enemies go shame. Thanks for being a fair analyst ken.

But who has the soldires

But who has the soldires molested?

Nigeria Soldiers joins #OCCUPY NIGERIA

What are we saying here. Are Nigeria soldiers not Nigerians? Don't they have the same rights as the other citizens that occupied Ojota and other places in the country.
If Nigerian all over the world are occupying places, is it a crime for soldiers too to OCCUPY Ojota while NLC and TUC engages in dialogue of betrayal?

Even our Peter Esele got a political appointment on the spot!

Nigeria

It is a sign of patroitism to criticise a government in which your daughter holds a position- I respect and agree completely with the Prof Soyinka

@king jaja u dont have as much oil as we have in the niger delta

U dont seem to know your history very well--we are not talking about africans who were freed from various ships at the end of the slave trade-and dumped in ogun state-as well as those who migrated from Togo and republic of benin-to settle in the west like OBJ-Most of he oil in the west are in areas occupied by ijaws-such as Ondo and Ekiti state including lagos state-dont we have ijaws in edo state? There are more offshore oil platforms in bayelsas than the entire west put together--if u have that much oil then fight for resource control and stop stealing money from oil import-the ongoing lagos based protest has shown-we can never be one--so let us split--go with yr soyinkas we go with our david west--any trouble with that-if u had much power-the kanuris would not have killed abiola, kudirat, bola ige and dumped obj and tinubu on u. As for the ibos they are folow folow-except when it comes to the yorubas-do they talk-

Soyinka is a hypocite and disgrace

This Soyinka is nothing but a shameless hypocrite. This 'wayo man' has always supported wicked people in government, mostly because of short-sighted and parochial reasons. From Babangida, Obasanjo to Dumbo Jona, Soyinka has used every stupid excuse to support mediocrity in the name of section or religion. He supported the murderous and homesexual Babangida because the ex-dictator claimed he had Yoruba ancestry. He again blindly supported the incest-committing , thieving and murderous Obasanjo due to tribal reasons. His foolish support for the clueless Jonathan is because the brainless tyrant is from the South. Soyinka is simply a pathetic and senile old man who is full of contradictions. Let him stop his noise making. Very few Nigerians believe him these days. He is a disgrace.

the strike has not achieved anything

the so called strike has not achieved any meaningful goals and the price of #97 per liter is almost same as the original amount, i have said and will still point it here that jonathan is the owner of the oil and he could do to it any thing he wishes, so it a challenge to all of [us]you get to your ass and ask where nature has blessed me and exploit it to your advantage,no need to quarrel. have we being told about the management of cows, onions, pepper,so what the noise about another man wealth.oil if you have oil in lagos then what are you waiting for, if you have the brain for know-how why all the noise about another man's fortune.

(@I'm suprised that alot of

(@I'm suprised that alot of people here are arguing with these ijaw folks, these guys don't ever make sense, except when it comes to drinking ogogoro)--CAN YOU SAY THE SAME THING TO OWEI LAKEMFA AND DAVID WEST-ARE THEY NOT IJAWS---SEE THE PROBLEM WITH YOUR NIGERIA? ANIMAL

When you have insincere

When you have insincere unions leading strike actions and always looking for them to be settled, you have incompetent and corrupt governments, ofcourse they are invitations for the military to be in charge and this is skwed towards disaster for any nation. The military may see it as an invitation to stroll into government and this will spell doom for Nigeria, bearing in mind that the military in Nigeria, judging from the past military rules, is worst than any civilian government.
