Things Fall Apart Makes List Of 50 Most Influential Books
Entering into its 52nd anniversary, Chinua Achebe’s classic novel, Things Fall Apart, continues to garner a string of laurels around the world. The latest honor for this, the most widely read and translated novel by an African author, came recently when scholar Andrew Taylor named Things Fall Apart as one of the 50 most “most important and influential books in the history of the world.
” Mr. Taylor states, “The theme of preserving cultural history in the face of Western domination in [Things Fall Apart] gave voice to the oppressed in Africa and caught the attention of the world. This novel, written in 1958, is still widely read and studied as an example of the damage of colonialism.”
In 2008, the novel’s 50th anniversary became a global celebration, with events on all the continents, from Abuja through Sydney to Mumbai. To mark the milestone, Professor Achebe’s publishers in the US issued a commemorative edition of the novel, which is already translated into more than sixty languages around the world. In addition, a Nigerian publisher, Book Craft, issued a wonderfully illustrated coffee table edition of the novel.
Mr. Achebe, who is the Mariana Fisher Professor at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, is at work on a much-awaited non-fiction book. The new book is expected to cover much of the author’s life, including vignettes about the Biafran War.
Meanwhile, Mr. Achebe’s Things Fall Apart as well as other works of fiction – among them, Arrow of God, A Man of the People, and Anthills of the Savannah – attract a growing readership and are widely used as texts at all levels of education.
Thank you Prof Achebe.
Thank you Prof Achebe.
Uncle C. Achebe, we are proud
Uncle C. Achebe, we are proud of you. Your name is symbolic and also represents what is good with Nigeria and the Black race at large, particularly in the literary world. You have done us immensely proud, little did you know that this famous book will be celebrated this much ( I bet) I wish you are in Nigeria to add your moral voice to the loud voice of the people that are advocating for good Governance.
WHAT SORT OF NONSENSE
WHAT SORT OF NONSENSE TRIBALISM POST IS THIS AFAM OKOSISI PLS IN NIGERIA OF TODAY THERE'S NO GROUND FOR THIS SENTIMENT IT BABARIC TO SAY THE LEAST
Things Fall Apart is the Igbo
Things Fall Apart is the Igbo gift to the world. Definitely, not Nigeria's! Weren't Awusa, Tivi, BeriBeri, Yoroba and KPoto soldiers trying to hunt down achebe in 1966 like bush meat? Shame to Nigeria to want to claim achebe. The Igbo should get the hell out of that hellhole today. Go now to the following link:

Things Fall Apart
Where rests the Nobel Prize Foundation?
A Pen Mightier Than Materialism
I have been thanking God -in fact, all Igbo (and the extended Africa) should be thankful for the African bible de jour, Things Fall Apart:
1. It is a raw, bleeding non-adulterated Igboland account;
2. In the wake of colonial exploitations the Igbo can always look at it with sober reflections;
3. It relates the rich culture of Ndigbo especially the political egalitarianism over reported dominance of African oligarchs and feudal leaders;
4. It points the way forward for a timid Igbo and those unwilling to challenge nature and being consigned to the dust of existence;
5. It is the one book that evokes simplicity and sincerity through honest information. Thus, requesting replication of truth;
6. It has assisted many non Africans in knowing the truth beyond the one-man storyline of Western perception and thus, enabling them to edge close towards African Literature as mirrored by Africans themselves;
7. Achebe in the triumph of the book and the fame it brought him, his village Ogidi, Anambra his home state and Nigerians (Africans) demonstrated the need for a shift from ill-acquired attributes.
-He sure has proved that there is beauty in true diligent knowledge,
-There is no futility in the sacrifices of saying NO to some kinds of "honour," to defend the defenceless.
-Achebe is a proof of the mightiness of Pen above materialism.
get help at...
Achebe is the pride of Nigeria alongside Wole Soyinka. We need more of such people and I hope my generation can produce such.
The unemployment problem is Nigeria is a hindrance though but job seekers can get help at http://www.nigerianjobsdaily.com/
I was more captivated by "No
I was more captivated by "No longer at ease". I read both novels as a student more than 30 years ago. Achebe has continued to do us proud. Nigeria needs a positive image badly.
Thank you Mr. Achebe. As an "Old Umuahian" myself, i'm immensely proud.
THANKS PROF!!!
Thanks Prof. for making us proud!
This is a good omen to our nation.
Long live Chinua Achebe
I read tins fall apart as an adult educatd Igboman in 2008 and it made more sense
Tins Fall Apart hav nt bn written in Achebe's mother tongue after 52yrs of fame. A wake up call to d Igbo academia, and nt Achebe!
Professor Achebe, thank you sir.
Pa Achebe:
May God continue to provide you with good health, so that you can continue to contribute to the development of our mind.
I read No Longer At Ease in high school, and I think he wrote it. At the time, those in form V were reading Things Fall Apart... And most people are passing their tests on it. Once you grab the book, just make sure you do not leave your soup on fire, otherwise, you would not be able to eat from it. It will burn because you would be so absorbed until you get disturbed by the flame.
Long Live Baba Achebe, I am very proud of you.
Gboluwaga.
What is in an award?
Something good can come out of Africa.
Congratulations Mr. Chinua Achebe.
I seize this opportunity to doubly congratulate you on the above award as well as your wisdom and Prescience of mind in seeing the risk of being associated and lumped together with all these common criminals, numerous PDP apologists and pawns now regaled with National honor when in more organized climes, they should have been all languishing in Prison for life, by turning down your National honors award in 2004- http://www.kwenu.com/record/2004/achebe_obasanjo2004.htm
A former petroleum minister, Tam David-West, has also joined your rank by declining the award of CON for 2009.
Personally, if I had been awarded earlier and accepted, tantalizing as it is, I would have been more inclined to quietly return it especially seeing the shameful list of those Goodluck recently awarded National honors to.
Read a comment on the list that includes former speaker of the House of Representatives Patricia Etteh CON, CFR, Bukola Saraki, Abdullahi Dikko Inde, Farida Waziri, Halilu Akilu linked to the bombing of Dele Giwa, Bode George, Katsina Alu etc etc - http://www.theinfostrides.com/index.php?topic=4272.0
Moreover, National awards are now used as a form of bribery; a total devaluation of someone's true worth given the class as well as the premise they are now being awarded to people - http://www.saharareporters.com/news-page/jonathan-%E2%80%9Cbribe%E2%80%9...
There is no doubt quite a number of these Nigerians on the list deserve recognition.
This is a true recognition of your intellect and industry as well as your contribution to the civilization of the world. These types of awards remain unblemished.
Great
Awesome. Proud to be associated with him.
LONG LIVE CHINUA ACHEBE
Pa, ACHEBE I am very proud of you and you are a BRIGHT LIGHT that shines from Nigeria onto the rest of the World.May God give you Long Life without adding pain to it.
You and your likes have proved to the skeptical World that Nigeria have good sons and daughters, with people like you around, one feels proud to be a NIGERIAN.We shall continue to celebrate you till time lasts.
THANK YOU, PA CHINUA ACHEBE.
All that is good about us is history
Good news, yeah, but did anyone notice that these days, all the few good news about Nigeria are historical. Things Fall Apart was written half a century ago!
KS
Thank God, something good to read about Nigeria this week, after reading about a disaster-personified called Odulele. Thank you, Achebe!! And shame on you Odulele, i hope some gays will teach a hard lesson when you get to prison!! And hope you die there, bastard!!
