EFCC Arraigns 88 Year-Old Man Over N1. 4m Scam

Olusola Alaba
By Wilson Uwujaren- Ag. Head, Media & Publicity

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 arraigned Mr Olusola Alaba (a.k.a Anthony Adekunle Okundalaiye, Lateef Tokunbo Alli, Magnus Obe), before Justice Lateefa Okunnu of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, on a four count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretences and forgery to the tune of N1.490.000 (One million, Four Hundred and Ninety Thousand Naira). He allegedly obtained the sum from one Olutoyin Ogundipe by falsely representing to her that the money represented the cost of rent for a three bedroom flat located at Plot 8, Oladimeji Alo Street,  Lekki Phase One, Lagos.

Count one of the charges read: “that Olusola Alaba (a.k.a Babatunde Salvage, Anthony Adekunle Okundalaiye, Lateef Tokunbo Alli, Magnus Obe) on or about the 20th day of June 2011, at Ikeja within the Ikeja Judicial Division of the Lagos State High Court with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N1.490.000 (One Million, Four Hundred and Ninety Thousand Naira Only) from Olutoyin Ogundipe by falsely representing to her that the said sum represent the cost of three bedroom flat located at Plot 8 Oladimeji Alo Street Lekki Phase One which representation you know to be false”.

The accused person pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

However, persecution counsel, Francis Usani urged the court to proceed on trial and remand the accused person in prison custody.
Defence counsel, Mercy Imveyan prayed the court to grant accused person bail on the grounds of ill health and old age.

Justice Okunnu ruled that the accused person should be reminded in EFCC custody and adjourned the case till March 26 and 27, 2013 for trial.

GOOD FROM E F C C

This will serve as an examples to other agents. But this should not be limited to Lagos State alone. It should be extended to other state cos this cases is rampart in almost all the state of the federation.

why?

my heart bleeds!

The man is a shame to himself and family!

I personally do not condone crime, either it's a Naira or billion fraud is a fraud. An 88yrs old man should be advising the younger generations against such instead of taking advantage of his age to defraud people that are his children' age.

He obviously has been in this business for so long but nemesis is now catching up with him at his old age. Trust me, a dubious old man that can be involved in fraud can be a flight risk, all he needs to do is take off to his village and no one will ever find him.

Shame on you baba Olusola Dada

Shame on EFCC

Shame on EFCC. This goes to show that they are a bunch of toothless Lions seeking who to devour! The majority of the people on this forum have said it all and even mentioned the names of corrupt leaders who have stolen from public funds glaringly. Why can't the EFCC prosecute them?

Useless EFCC, One is presumed

Useless EFCC, One is presumed 100% innocent untill convicted in a proper constituted law court.

On what basis is the EFCC taking the lead on such a case, what is the duty of the Nigerian police etc.Instead of working hard to secure conviction on the numerous cases of corruption running into billions of US dollars that they have in their hands they a busy with this type of case.

On what basis did this stupid Judge deny an 88 yr old man bail for an allegation of defrauding somebody 1.4m.

May God punish both the EFCC team on this case and the Judge that denied this old man bail.

WHY REFUSE HIM BAIL WHEN THE BIG POLITICIAN THIEVES ARE BAILED

If he committed a crime then he ought to face the law but why refuse him bail if Babalakin,Bankole, and their likes can get bail. The 88 year old is charged with fraudulently obtaining 1.4 million naira, can any one compare that to THE AMOUNT Babalakin and Bankole are charged with obtaining or laundering.
Our justice delivery system is a joke, this man is too old to be considered a flight risk and what about his health,if he dies in detention, those who ordered his detention will have blood on their hands. The double standard in our justice system is nauseating,if this old man was related to a politician he would be freed for sure, take the case of the son of a Governor who was granted administrative bail for laundering charges in shady circumstances then he killed in a car accident a few weeks later and was granted bail instantly, what kind of country is this? This is a human rights issue,in many countries octagenarians are bailed on self recognition.

Realistically, Can someone be

Realistically, Can someone be detained past 48 hours? The man pleaded not guilty. Where was this judge when bankole was arrested? Hmmmmmm.

WISHING HIM A SAD NINETIETH BEHIND THE BARS.

Sola Alaba is strong enough to celebrate his ninetieth in KIRIKIRI. Who knows whether that is his true nama. A blatant knave.

IDENTICAL GENES WITH FAROUK LAWAN THE THIEF!

This man has something in common with Farouk Lawan = FRAUD! They are related by stealing.

mixed feeling

In as much as I will not condone crime, I think EFCC instead of chasing looters of our treasury and those who have turned our resources into their personal accounts they are busy spending hard earned tax payers money in chasing SHADOWS.Even if the man is guilty (which I feel he is) there could have been a way to allow a district police to handle this case instead of using the nation national crime fighter to intervene at this low level. You know what I think? I feel the lady that was swindled is highly connected with EFCCthats why our national corruption fighter can be deployed to a low level issue as this. As for the judge its either she is over zealous, biased or even both.

To all of you that are

To all of you that are criticizing the court for reminding this old man in custody over an alleged fraud involving what could be seen as a fraction of what big thieves out there steal, please remember that the property involved here is a private property and not public.

Penny Wise, Pound Foolish

Politicians and public office holders in Nigeria steal billions of Dollars and Naira and nothing happens to then. Leave this 88 year old man alone, please.

The detention of an 88 years old man

It is a shame that such an elderly man who is 88 year old, still got himself inovolve in such a deal. However, I am 100% in support of what Glona Dibia- Ngofa wrote. A lot of our former governors, politicians and frudulent business men etc who stole our money and cart such money to foreign bank account are still walking free today in our dear country. Although I am not suppose to tell the judge what to do but he was stupid and partial to have remainded him in EFCC cell THAT IS NIGERIA FOR YOU.

Stupid EFCC

Stupid EFCC. What happened to the big thieves you "caught" recently including the rich man that was hiding at LUTH recently. Shameless EFCC, empty barrel making the loudest noise. Go after big thieves if you can!

...as expected, he must be a Yoruba man

"...make una leave story. Na blood the thin dey"

To the Yorubas, stealing & fraud are an incurable blight.

Shebi na which kind of deliverance person go do for 88yrs old scammer? You only find them in oduduwa republic. Shame. You will be surprised that this old fool went to Cambridge & probably has a PhD in scammertology. Idiots.

Long live the United Republic of the SS&SE

THIS IS FAROUK LAWAN'S FATHER!

This is FAROUK LAWAN's father! He only did a change of name recently. They are closely related by the stealing genes. FAROUK LAWAN is waiting for his own term. Why the delay? If it were under OBJ, FAROUK LAWAN WOULD BE IN UNIFORM BY NOW. Shielded or not, FAROUK LAWAN is a THIEF, A SMELLY ROTTEN THIEF. HOPE HE IS NO LONGER STEALING THE BULBS IN THE HOUSE FOR MONEY?

efcc dont start with an 80 yr old man-go after orji kalu

a man steals 30b is he is treat with kid gloves while an 80yrs old papa who may have been lured into the game by his kids is made to rest in the custody of efcc-while orji kalu is being celebrated by efcc

GOOD JOB, PAPA!

At 88years old you are still stealing? Well, thats Nigeria for you. I know there are those that will ask why is EFCC going after this old man while big thieves like Bankole are running around, I say you got to start somewhere. I want both the big thieves and the little thieves caught. If its seem only the little thieves are being punished then go big. Nobody is stopping you from stealing a billion instead of a million. That is the beauty of Nigerian 'DEMOCRAZZZY'.

If baba can do the crime, he

If baba can do the crime, he should do the term. Justice Okunnu, thanks for sound judgement and conviction of the ola crook. The lady involved could pass for his daughter or grand daughter. He looks like an omo onile. The less of him we have around the better.

Wow! Not that I condone

Wow! Not that I condone anyone (young or old) stealing/swindling, but how does EFCC arraign an 88 year old frail-looking man and refuse him bail till March? Is he a flight risk? How? Are you kidding me? What is N1.4 million compared to what our so called leaders steal and cart away everyday to foreign accounts and the same EFCC turns a blind eye? There are so many former political office holders walking free after stealing billions. Isn't this selective juctice where only the "poor" and "unconnected" are made scapegoats for the real thieves in expensive agbadas and imported brand name designer suits? Truly; where is the JUSTICE in this country? EFCC, pls, you can do better than that!

Haba

Haba, Lateefa, ko da o. I know your job has to be done but then again to remand an 80 something year old man in custody? Hmmmmm not supporting the old man but...........

Is this what EFCC should be

Is this what EFCC should be doing?. They are leaving the big fishes and going after the small ones. What about the subsidy thieves, Corrupt ex governors and ministers, NNPC and other ministries to name a few. Should this small case not be the responsibility of the police?
This EFCC has lost relevance and is now a big joke. At the end of the year EFCC will now bring out a score card to say they have successfully prosecuted a lot of cases talk about using a sledge hammer to kill a file.

EFCC please expend your energy time and resources and cases that will make a Hugh impact and affect the lives of Nigerians positively.

A shame to EFCC

I see EFCC as a mere dog not Lion. I wonder why this should even be published in the first place, I thought this is a police case. What about the billions of Dollar the "Big one" steal from our treasury, why are EFCC not after them? But just for an old man who may not have someone to help him out. Hmmmmmmmmmm EFCC why barking on this Old Man?

I Dey Laughooo!

How can EFCC arrest an old man and remand him in gory prison custody for a "paltry" sum while the big heads--Faruk Lawan, Bankole, IBB, "Dr." Orji Kalu, Obasanjo, Abdulsalami, Andy Uba, Anineh, Comm. of Police, Adamu Bolanta, just to name a few remain free? I dey laughooo!

Na wao! Nobody should be

Na wao! Nobody should be involved in all these at 88.

Old Soldier

Crime and duping is running in the blood and itches him that at this age he is suppose to be thanking God for giving him a long life, he is still busy running around looking for who to dupe. In his hay days in government who know how much havoc he must done.

Does he have responsible children who can advice him, what does he need all this money to do at the twilight of his life.

You can take a pig to London it still remains a pig.

EFCC, f** you!

Is this what EFCC has turned into?
