Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo of the Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, on February 19, 2013, sentenced a former banker, Vera Ogbonna Akanni to nine (9) years imprisonment for defrauding her bank customers various sums of money to the tune of  N35,402,440.75 (Thirty-Five Million, Four Hundred and Two Thousand, Four Hundred and Forty Naira, Seventy Five kobo only). The convict was prosecuted on an eight (8) count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and stealing by fraudulent conversion.

Prior to her sentencing, defence counsel, Yinka Oyeniji, drew the attention of the court to an affidavit of means placed before the court on February 17, 2013. Besides, Justice Onigbanjo asked the prosecution counsel, Oluwatoyin Owodunni, if the convict had any previous records of conviction. Owodunni confirmed to the court that the convict did not have any such record. However, the prosecution counsel further addressed the court on the convict’s sentencing, saying that the offence for which she was tried attracts a punishment of between seven (7) and twenty (20) years imprisonment.

"My lord, this is money entrusted to the convict as a banker and an account officer. Her criminal conduct is not only a breach of trust but a heinous crime. This money belongs to innocent and unsuspecting members of the public", Owodunni submitted.  He, therefore, prayed the court that the convict be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Justice Onigbanjo consequently sentenced the convict to 7 (seven) years imprisonment on two of the counts and 2 (two) years imprisonment on two other counts effective from December 2, 2009 when she was first arrested. The sentence is to run concurrently.

Also, Justice Onigbanjo ordered the convict to make full restitution of the stolen money to the owners.

Respect to website author, some fantastic selective information.

9yrs jail term for fraudulent banker

Though our justice system is not perfect but nobody can say the woman should be allowed to go free for stealing public funds. Others might have done it without being cut or getting a lighter sentence like Lucky igbinedon and co but we all must condemn corruption in all totality.

Relax abi, she get children

Relax abi, she get children abi? Her victims don't have kids abi. This woman used the trust one of her customers put in her as accounts officer to run the customer back by almost 20million naira, almost crippling the customers business. Abeg oo. If you do the crime, you should be ready to do the time. She perpertuated the crime while in Oceanic Bank at Abule Ado branch. I know her well. She's even lucky she got 9years and not 29years

Can you for ones be fair?

can you listen to yourself again? No cleansing can ever start from the bottom, you must start from the top.In as much as no one is encouraging stealing, honestly ask yourself how many of those caught since we started this democracy got 3years imprisonment after stealing billions of naira.Who is fooling who?

TRIBALISTIC JUDGEMENT

Bode George was given 2 years, Cicilia Ibru, 6 months, the Aboki that stole 23billion was asked to refund 750.000 Naira and keep the rest money, while this Igbo girl was given 9years for common 35million.

Nigeria shouldhave followed the same process on geound and ask her to refund 7500 Naira and go free. I am not supporting corruption, but I must say that this is injustice to the Igbos. What is good for the goose is. Good for the gander as well.

FRAUD

This lady and many of her type are every where in Nigeria. Our people follow the example of her leaders since colonial days. In jos , the covenant fadama , a so called cooperative society aimed at alleviating poverty so called has swindledcontributors of there hard earned money . Bishop Katung who floated this outfit has refused to honour his word as a man of God. The efcc should arrest them and bring to justice .

Ratio!

The woman should have stolen enough to qualify her to just walk away!

9 year imprisonment for

9 year imprisonment for stealing 35 million naira is not enough. If severe punishment is not mated to corruption in this country, we will only turning Nigeria in to treasure island. 'go steal, hide your loot, serve your jail term, come out and enjoy your stolen treasure'.

fallacy and the shameful judicairy sector

hello nigerians,it has been seen and proved over time that our judiciary setting and sector is porour andc outlandish to the core.what a perverse society and fallacious judiciary and shameless leaders.it is well, God is still on the throne

Naija Judiciary

213million uSD pension received a fine of 1500USD, 35million naira , 9 years imprisonement!!! naija 1!!!

EFCC

Is this why Nigerians call people that steal millions DUMMYS and those that steal billions the SMART GUYS.Its your country, you explain it.

VERA OGBONNA

This is what justice should be and not the type dished out to the pension thief. Judges owe the society a duty to key into the fight against corruption and all forms of criminality. In sentencing, which is the exclusive preserve of the court, the trial judge should give terms that reflects the seriousness of the offence. Frankly, the Lagos State Judiciary deserves praises for the courage they have continued to show. It is only with judgments like this that intending criminals and looters of our common wealth will be detered from executing their criminal intent. This is the more reason why the out dated Penal Code needs revisiting. Thank you Jugde!

Foolish guy

What has this got to do with breaking up of a country. Even country's that are independent our trying to come together and work as one and you are saying Nigeria should break up, because of your own greedy mouth. Na you they suppose drop inside that prison for in sighting hatred.

ABOKI

You all know that the real meaning of Aboki is friend. In Nigeria, it is equal to stupidity. This mumu who does not understand anything is adding ethnicity to this. Instead of wondering how a person that stole billions is fined mere N750,000 and a N35 million fraud gets nine years. Who makes these laws????? Nigeria is an interestinf place

On the whole Banking/customer

On the whole Banking/customer relationship management is a very risky venture. Anyhow you look at it, Bankers/Marketers are always at the receiving end of the stick. Bank marketers beware, a lot of customers are out to get you into trouble if you are careless. Always know when to say "NO" and put your feet down to desperate demands by fraudulent customers.

How many years will the Rougue - Erasmus Akingbola get?

How many years will the Rougue - Erasmus Akingbola get?
What about OBJ. IBB , David Mark & others? You sentence a woman for mere 35m but people who have been stealing even before she was born e.g., Thief OBJ & Thief IBB are allowed to go loose...and they continue to infect other people with their incurable blight of corruption like possessed demons.

This is ONLY possible when you chose to run a continent as a country.

Verily verily I say unto you, Nigeria is not a r country but a continent. Break up NOW!!!

Long live the United Republic of the SS&SE

THUNDER FIRE YOUR ENTIRE GENERATION.

Thunder fire your entire generation for making such nasty comments. Is Umaru Dikko an Igbo man? is IBB,Atiku,Absalam,Abacha, the Pension scam Igbo people? Terroists like you that has been pestling this country into comma should all be wiped out. Idiot. You are writing trash with your stolen China phone. BABARIC ANIMALS.

Extrapolation of Prison terms for Ibori the Ogidigborigbo

If I am to extrapolate correctly. If this man got 9 years for stealing N35m from approx 5000 customers, then Ibori will approximately get Life Imprisonment for stealing millions of $$ dollars from approx 3 million citizens.....

@ aboki

People should ignore this clown who calls himself; he is trying to stoke ethnic biasness. For your information I am not Ibo.

EFCC has done more harm than

EFCC has done more harm than good to Nigeria.
These idiots only secured a two year sentence for a rogue that stole billions of naira from the pension fund and this lady is going to prison for nine years for thirty- five million naira.
Good job efcc. We are watching and God is definitely watching how justice is meted out in this condemned country.

I DEY LAUGH o.

Too much injustice in Nigeria!

As the saying go, nobody can tell your story better than yourself. The EFCC has been telling its story of late, and talking about the strides they have been taking in ridding the country of corrupt persons. Kudos!

However, there is too much confusion and inconsistencies in the administration of justice system. One person bags 4 years for stealing a mobile phone; another gets 3 for stealing a goat; a minor was detained for 5 years, while awaiting trial for stealing a mobile phone; now a banker bags 8 years for stealing or converting millions. While the biggest of them all, who stole BILLIONS, simply walks out of court and into a waiting posh car. Where is the justice in this?

Well done, to EFCC!
