ERC Condemns NANS Leaders For Endorsing Goodluck Jonathan, Says NANS Must Go Back To The Old Tradition Of Defending Nigerian Students

Nigerian Students
By Hassan Taiwo Soweto & Chinedu Bosah

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) condemns in strong terms the parochial and self-serving political activities of some National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) ‘leaders’.

We are not however surprised by the shameless activities of different factions of NANS leadership as the student body has lost its vibrant tradition and has been taken over by student opportunists who deploy it to serve the interests of different sections of ruling elite.

One of the factional NANS Presidents, Mr. Jude Imague was reported in the media to have declared NANS and Nigerian students’ support for President Goodluck Jonathan.  Jude was quoted to have said: “we are equally unanimous in our scrutiny that that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, having served as a lecturer, Local Government Chairman, Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President and current president of the nation is the most experienced, qualified, efficient, reliable, equitable, and fair Nigerian to lead Nigeria to the promised land in 2011 as Nigeria’s President.” This proposition is fallacious to say the least.  Olusegun Obasanjo, for instance, twice served this country in the highest capacity and more than any other leader but failed woefully!

It was also reported in the statement that NANS has opened an endorsement register in all campuses for students to sign and was ready to embark on raising funds to refund whosoever purchased nomination form for President Jonathan to vie for the post of the president and to achieve that, each students will pay a fee of N50 each, which would not be mandatory. The findings from ERC members in several campuses across the federation where we have active members and sympathizers suggest the contrary. There are no registers anywhere. The reality is that the refund for PDP nomination fees Jude claimed would be to raised from students, which is about N10 million, is what they hope to collect from President Jonathan or whoever that is willing to pay- and that is if they have not collected the money.

ERC is opposed Jonathan’s aspiration like all other anti-students/workers presidential aspirants/candidates due to their anti-education posture vis-à-vis underfunding of education at level.  At any rate, the fact is that no parliament or congress of students has been convoked at any campus to discuss who to support among the presidential aspirants, let alone deciding on it. Using the name of NANS and Nigerian students in whatever capacity to declare support for any presidential aspirant is not only sheer opportunism, but is also undemocratic and treacherous.

In another development as reported in Daily Trust, the NANS Zone C Coordinator, Kassim Mohammed Kassim, though was critical of President Jonathan’s refusal to increase workers salary, which was commendable, was parochial in opposing the ambition, which was fundamentally based on appointment of ministers from the zone (Nasarawa, Benue and Plateau states).  Read him: “Nigerians are suffering. President Jonathan has no regards for the zone. All the ministers from the zone are junior ministers. So I see no reason why we should rally round him for 2011.”

We want to categorically state that the reason why Nigerians are suffering is not because of the superiority or inferiority of ministers or other political office holders appointed by the president from any zone or state. We are pressed to ask why have Nigerians from zones or states with superior ministers including the president who is the highest public office holders not benefitted from such appointments or offices in terms of infrastructural development and improved living conditions? We have had senior education ministers appointed from different states of the federation at different epoch and yet education keeps collapsing. The root cause of suffering in Nigeria is due to the pro-rich policies implemented by successive governments.

NANS used to be a platform for defending students’ interests, articulating and defending policies that are beneficial to Nigerians and in most cases was in league with workers against anti-poor policies. The ERC hereby challenge Nigerian students and the present NANS leadership to re-build NANS as a platform for the defense of ordinary people, students and workers as opposed to the usage of the platform for opportunism and pecuniary aggrandizement.

It is obvious as we approach the 2011 election that most NANS leaders for monetary reasons will pitch tent with different sections of the ruling elite who are from all ramifications responsible for the sufferings of Nigerians and continued attacks on the living standard of workers, students and peasants. As we write, there have been wave of fees hike across the federation with little or no resistance from NANS. In fact most NANS leaders at different level have joined forces with school authorities and government to attack students’ interests.

However, Jonathan’s  presidential ambitions, just like a Babangida, Atiku, Bukola Saraki and others presently aspiring will not be fundamentally beneficial in any way to Nigerian students and workers. It is crystal clear that the ‘generational shift’ or the ‘old brigade’ aspirants cannot move Nigeria forward! All without exception have been attacking the rights (democratic and socio-economic) of students and workers at different leadership capacity by commercializing education that is responsible for wave of fees hike across the campuses and poverty wages presently paid to Nigerian workers or supports anti-poor, neo-liberal policies of privatization, concessioning, deregulation that seek to improve the lot of a few rich at the expense of the masses.  We have arrived at this position having critically analyzed the dominant political parties (PDP, ANPP, ACN etc.) that can be best described as pro-rich establishment parties. The Labour Party that is supposed to be the political party for working people and poor with an alternative economic agenda opposed to neo-liberal policies, has become largely pro-rich and not quite different from the parties that are responsible for the crisis confronting Nigerians.

Therefore, the hope for Nigerian masses does not rest in President Jonathan, IBB, Atiku and others like them but in the building of a genuine mass workers party with an economic agenda that ensure massive investment in the people and infrastructure and the public ownership and democratic control and management of the abundant human and material resources by workers and professionals as means of mobilizing adequate resources and preventing corrupt practices. This, for us in the ERC, is the way out of the vicious cycle that has characterized the socio-economic and political situation in Nigeria- Any other way out compounds the crisis.

Hassan Taiwo Soweto  - National Coordinator                                                         Chinedu Bosah-National Secretary

Perry Romos GOOFED!

What rights do the leadership of NANS have to endorse any candidate on behalve nigeria students? and mind you, NANS is not a political group but instead a pressure group.

who is ERC

Who are the erc or whatever acronym they choose to call themselves.
where have they been anf what have they been doing before 2010, they and groups like theirs are the reason nigeria is like this.

i completely agreed

infact everything you said is right. The same thing the Human right did that makes OBJ benefited from the struggle he was not part of. So let ERC stop relying on state sponsored organ of the society for way forward to Nigerian crisis.

Get your fact right

perhaps you did smelt communism.A piece of information for you at no point was Nigeria practicing communism. And who told you the ideology is dead....except for stalin guys like you, well i thank God you still remember North korea, china, cuba. Thus why cant there be comparism with these states you menthioned?

WHO IS JUDE IMAGUE

I know him so well. We both served as SUG Parliamentarians back at UNIBEN. I'm surprised at his sudden rebirth. He has never been a progressive. Inshort, i still recall how himself and some clique of friends under a reactionary organization called "SPECTRUM" worked acidiously with the school authority to implement several anti-student positions taken by the school authority. How can such a person speak on behalf of Nigeria students. What exactly is he still doing in school?

R U FASHOLA!S BROTHER OR WHAT?

DONT U KNOW THAT UR FASHOLA IS OVERHYPED,OR R U BLIND OR MAYBE U R GETTING SOMETHING FROM HIM.THE U KNOW HOW MUCH THE STATE GENERATE COMPARED TO WHAT WE R GETTING.DUE U KNOW THAT AVERAGE RENT RATE IN LAGOS IS 500000,WHY? COS NO INFRASTRUTURES.WHY DONT U BUILD NEW CONNECTING ROADS AND D FOURTH MAINLAND BRIDGES,HE IS NOWHERE NEAR MY LAGOS IDOL JAKANDE,WHO GAVE US NEW ROADS,SCHOOLS AND HOUSING WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOR D CITIZENS.U CAN SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN LEKKI,THREE TOLLGATES! "The ERC hereby challenge

"The ERC hereby challenge Nigerian students and the present NANS leadership to re-build NANS as a platform for the defense of ordinary people, students and workers as opposed to the usage of the platform for opportunism and pecuniary aggrandizement."

The Education Rights Campaign is living a pipe dream. You cannot get out of people what they dont have. Why not ask the National Association of Prostitutes to champion women;s rights.

I was once a Nigerian student leader and we fought along sidfe Segun Okeowo and buried Akintunde Ojo during the Ali Must Go days, so I sympathise with ERC.

But frankly these NANS have no clue what you are talking about. ERC should be championing a revolution in our education and your suggestion of creating a grass roots party for a government responsive to education should be the objective if achievable. But dont expect NANS, not even Labour to help you. Afterall National Union of Road Transport Workers, with its fair share of thugs, that can be hired out to politicians are also Labour. Na Naija we day.

IS THERE ANYTHING LIKE NIGERIA STUDENT?

WHAT DO U EXPECT FROM HALF BAKED STUDENTS, FULL OF YAHOO YAHOO BOYS,IBB SAID IT,NO YOUTHS,AND PEOPLE WHERE COMPLAINING,THEY ARE FOLLOWING THE FOOTSTEPS OF THEIR YOUTH MODELS LIKE FASHOLA,BANKOLE,SARAKI,TINUBU,THE BANK MDS. BARAWOOOOS!

No alternative for thestarved, malnourished, and poverty ridden

The Days have gone when NANS dictates, then the most stubborn head of states were afraid of NANS. I'm deeply shocked with the kind of people that parade themselves as NANs officials nowadays.

Well, i still have the believe they are victims of circumstances: NO ALTERNATIVE FOR SUBJECTED STARVING, MALNOURISHED, AND POVERTY RIDDEN YOUTH. its actually shameful……..God shall see us through!

What do u expect from Nigerian Youths ?

Was IBB not vindicated when he said that there is no youth to take over the mantle of leadership and rulership in Nigeria ?
Why are we surprised about what is happening to our students of higher institution ? What do we expect from students who kill fellow students because of girl friends?
What do expected from students who are already armed robbers?
What do we expect from students that partake in examination malpractices?
The vices of our today youths in higher Institutions of learning are too numerous to mention. These are what informed IBB to conclude that our youths are not fit to rule

REDICULOUS NANS

The so called modern day NANS is nothing but a body of political agents whose aim is to and objective they dont know. NANS is suppose to be a non governmental, non partisan, non professional body both a pressure groups whose aim is t influence the policy of the goverment to the favour of the generality of Nigerian student. The action by NANs official to endorse a candidate is simply not their fault both a showcase of poor standard and polluted eucation that these officials are experiencing. I call for the immediate sack of involved NANs official, so as to serve as a dedterrent to young generation of ever vibrant nigerian student.

EXPOSITION OF DECEPTION

Fire for fire!! Gradually, the deception at the Eagle Square will be exposed. The problem with our democracy is poverty. This is one reason why election in Nigeria will never be objective. The hungry masses who form the bulk of the voting population can mortgage their voting rights with a cup of "Dangote Salt" or a cup of "Dangote Rice". Who gives them the most get their votes. This is a price the leaders must pay for impoverishing her people. In civilised climes, the unemployed and aged are on some kind of support from the government. Give the people hunger. Give the people poverty. Give the people poor education. Expose them to environmental hazards. You will receive deception from them. You will receive disappointment from them.

The young NANS man who was at the Eagle Square on the Jonathan's declaration day was only exhibiting his youthful exuberance, vibrancy and looking for what to eat. It is shameful that a young man would openly make such commital comments on behalf of a body that did not authorise his attendance. He had a right to attend on his personal capacity as a Nigerian but to speak on behalf of the entire Nigerian students is criminal, wicked and self-serving. As youths, are we truly not ready to lead this country? Our actions are testimonies of our limitations.

The PDP governors who have failed the people of their various states declared the "total support" of their states to the Jonathan project. What a deception! A few days after they finished their declaration at the Eagle Square, they were seen romancing with Atiku in Jos and Sokoto. What kind of people are these? Was it that the declarations they made were mirages - the more you look the less you see kind of? How come their supporters were drumming the same support for Atiku? God will help Jonathan. I hope they will not make a fool of him at the end of the day.

ERC IS SPONSORED

NANS Leaders have the right to endorse any candidates on behalf of Nigerian students. After all, NANS is a political body, and that is why it is referred to as "student politics". They represent Nigerian students and should support any candidates that they think would best cater to the welfare of Nigerian students. I don't see any difference between the NANS endorsement of president Jonathan and the South East Governors, South West Governors, Middle Belt Governors and South South Governors endorsements of the president(minus Oshiomhole, who is of course working for IBB behind the scene). So, I think ERC is itself guilty of what they are accusing NANS of, because every bit of their write up points to the fact that they are sponsored against President Jonathan.

Too bad. These attacks won't stick on TEFLON JONATHAN, THE MOVING TRAIN.

Kingsley or whatever they

Kingsley or whatever they called you jonathan has no image except shame and lying is only things expected from jonathan. Ribadu is the same coward as jonathan and falana and olumhense, they are looking for short cut to power but God Almighty will disgrace them one by one

NANS is DEAD

There is no longer student unionism in Nigeria university campuses. This has been supplanted by thuggery and cultism.

NANS also openly endorsed Obasanjo's third time bid....

Democracy means supporting whoever you want

If Nigerians want democracy, then become democratic. The ERC or whoever from the last paragraph in this article support the Labour party. That's fine. No one should condemn you for it. Just like it's wrong to insinuate someone has been 'paid' once they voice an endorsement for a candidate.
Igbos say 'egbe beru, ugo beru, nke si ozo ebela, ka nku ya kpajie' ie, 'let the kite perch on a branch, and the eagle perch also, that who says the other can't perch, may his wings break'. It simply means live and let live, treat others as you'd like to be treated.
In a true democracy, people can endorse and choose any candidate, even if it's a party called the monster raving loony party, without being condemned. Condemning people for their support of any candidate is a form of intimidation. For this democracy thing to work, we must all adapt to the atmosphere of total freedom.

NANS AND NIGERIAN STUDENT ASSOCIATION

PLEASE NANS FOR THE SAKE OF OUR COLLECTIVE FUTURE, STAY CLEAR OF NATIONAL POLITICS....

SHAME ON YOU KASSIM MOHAMMED KASSIM, NANS Zone C Coordinator, IF YOU DID GIVE THAT INTERVIEW ON DAILY TRUST...

Mr. Jude Imague, MY GUY GEJ JEDDY JEDDY DON'T HAVE PLANS FOR NIGERIANS. DON'T BE FOOL.

THE PRESENT DAY NANS SHOULD NOT DRAG NATIONAL POLITICS UNTO ITS PLATFORM JUST STAY FOCUS ON YOUR OBJECTIVES, IF YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE IN THE FIRST PLACE (NO PON INTENDED).

LONG LIVE NANS....

Did I just smell communism?

Did I just smell communism?
ERC’s stand is a bit confusing for me, but I want to believe that confusion is the intent of this write up. Yes NANS should stick to its age-long creed of defending Nigerian students, cos whenever NANS or any other student body makes pronouncements on issues out the school campus, then that is bound to raise eyebrows. That is why NANS should be encouraged to instead engage all aspirants in questions pertaining to their views and intentions on education and not just endorsing one political party, politician or aspirant or even ideology. Hope you Hassan and Chinedu get my drift?
This is important as their article is purely political and thus may be devoid of truth, an essential ingredient in criticism. The article is also trying to sell a political ideology that is at best dead. Please note my dear students, that while the rest of the mumu so-called socialist or communist countries wallop in abject poverty and wielding big empty guns, China is taking the part never taken by many, a fusion of capitalist and communist ideologies. That is what we have been practicing (or something like it) here in Nigeria, just that ours is tainted by corrupt african customs. Thus you cannot compare North Korea and China or China and Cuba? Or what political ideology are our dear students promoting? All we need is a system that demands accountability and transparency and the plane called Nigeria will take off from its near comatose and grounded state.

NANS IS EBBING OUT.

I PERSONALLY WANT TO DRAG THESE KIDS IN NANS`EXECUTIVES DOWN THE MEMORY LANES OF NANS ACTIVE YEARS WHEN THE BODY USED TO PLAY ACTIVE ROLES IN CHECK MATING UNCALLED DECISIONS BY ANY GOVERNMENT IN POWER. IN YEAR 1976, THE FAMOUS "ALI MUST GO" SAGA DURING LT. GENERAL OLUSEGUN OBASANJO DICTATORIAL REGIME, WHERE THE EDUCATION MINISTER , COL.AHMADU ALI ,FORMER PDP CHAIRMAN REMOVED THE FEDERAL FOOD SUBSIDY FOR STUDENTS IN THE FEDERAL TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS. ANOTHER IMPORTANT NANS ROLE WAS "BABANGIDA MUST GO" SAGA OF 1989 OVER THE CONTROVERSIAL EBONY MAGAZINE PUBLICATION THAT IBB IS ONE OF THE RICHEST PRESIDENT IN THE WORLD. REVEALED BY LATE DR. TAI SOLARIN .WHEN YOU WATCH EVENTS LIKE THE ABOVE MENTIONED ONES ,ONE HAS TO BE PROUD OF NANS. BUT TODAY THESE KIDS ARE IDLING IN PARTISAN POLITICS, WHILE THE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN THE COUNTRY IS DWINDLING BOTH IN STANDARD AND IN INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES. THE BODY IS NO LONGER UNITED,RATHER THEY GREEDLY ALLOW THEMSELVES TO BE USED BY THESE V .I. P ...SEE FELA FOR FULL MEANING.

@KINGSLEY UCHEGBULEM; why

@KINGSLEY UCHEGBULEM; why don't you start your own website or news media to only write all the good things of your darling GEJ. The SR Editors at least allowed you to air your views via their media, I doubt you would be so magnanimous when you start your GEJ media organisation.

If you actually read this post from ERC and could only rationalise it to this maggot infested brain argument of "I HAVE REFUSED TO COMMENT ON UR REPORTS BUT AM FORCED TO MAKE A COMMENT NOW, FROM ALL MY FINDINGS IN UR REPORTS, U ACT AS IF U ARE PAID TO DISTROY THE IMAGE OF GEJ", then I am sorry for GEJ for having people like you as his image launderers.

Too many 50yr old babies in Nigeria, what a shame!

NIGERIA IS ALMOST DEAD.

Corruption everywhere, every department.
is too much for jonathan to handle unless
we find someone very brutal that will put them
all in prison and throw the keys away, shameful.

Well, its a shame NANS has

Well, its a shame NANS has lost her credibility, leaders like bendel of lautech, started all these agenda stuffs, but one day it shall be well.

SAHARA, PLS HELP THIS NATION MOVE FORWARD

I HAVE REFUSED TO COMMENT ON UR REPORTS BUT AM FORCED TO MAKE A COMMENT NOW, FROM ALL MY FINDINGS IN UR REPORTS, U ACT AS IF U ARE PAID TO DISTROY THE IMAGE OF GEJ. ANY STORY CONCERNING GEJ IS ALWAYS TAKING SERIOUS BY UR OFFICE, LET ME INFORM U IF U DON'T KNOW, THE MORE U CRITISIZE HIM THE MORE POPULAR HE BECOMES, AM NOT A POLITICIAN BUT I READ UR REPORTS EVERY DAY. IF U ARE WISE ENOUGH OR RATHER IF U ALWAYS READ PEOPLES COMMENT ON UR REPORT CONCERNING GEJ, U WILL FIND OUT THAT PEOPLE ARE TIRED OF THIS UR PAID CRITICS AGAINST GEJ. GEJ HAS ONLY RUN THIS COUNTRY IN A FIEW MONTHS, HE NEEDS OUR SUPPORTS TO BRING A CHANGE TO THIS COUNTRY. I HAVE ALWAYS WONDERED WHEN FUEL CRISIS WILL STOP IN THIS COUNTRY, BUT WITHIN THE FIEW MONTHS HE IS IN OFFICE WE HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED ANY SHORTAGE OF FUEL IN THE FILLING STATIONS. FUEL IS A BASIC NECCECITY TO NIGERIANS, IF THERE IS FUEL CRISIS THE PRICE OF ITEMS INCREASE COST OF TRANSPORTATIONS ALSO INCREASES, WHEN U EARN ONE MILLION NAIRA AND U SPEND EIGHT HUNDRED THOUSAND ON TRANSPORT THEN I WONDER HOW MUCH WILL BE LEFT FOR OTHER PERSONAL PROBLEMS. POWER ISSUE, THE POPULATION OF THIS COUNTRY MULTIPLIES EVERY DAY, POWER GENERATION IN THIS COUNTRY IS NOT A ONE DAY ISSUE. NO GOVT. CAN PROMISE IMMIDIETE POWER GENERATION TO THIS COUNTRY, IT TAKES SOME YEARS TO ACTUALISE THAT, THIS COUNTRY NEEDS MORE POWER GENERATING PLANTS IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS OF THIS COUNTRY TO CONFRONT THE RISING POPULATION OF THIS COUNTRY. I HAPPEN TO WORK IN AN ORGANISATION WERE SERIES OF MEETINGS HAVE BEEN GOING ON WITH PRIVATE POWER GENERATING COMPANIES. THE PURPOSE OF THIS MEETINGS ARE TO INVOLVE PRIVATE COMPANIES IN THE GENERATION OF STEADY POWER SUPPLY. RAIL WAYS ARE COMING BACK COS I HAVE A FRIEND WHO WAS RECENTLY EMPLOYED BY THE RAIL WAY COOPERATION THEY HAD CONCLUDED THERE TRAINING AND HAS BEEN POSTED TO BENUE STATE. THERE ARE SO MAY THINGS GOING ON THAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW, I DON'T KNOW GEJ I HAVE NOT SEEN HIM PHYSICALY BEFORE ECCEPT IN TELEVISION BUT I SINCERELY BELIEVE THAT GOD HAS A PURPOSE HE WISHES TO FULFIL IN THIS COUNTRY THROUGH HIM GEJ. GO THROUGH HIS LIFE HISTORY AND SEE HOW HE GOT TO THIS STATE. U WILL FIND OUT THAT FIGHTING HIM IS LIKE FIGHTING GOD. HE MAY NOT BE MR. RIGHT BUT LET GODS WILL PREVAIL COS I KNOW THAT NOTHING GOOD COMES EASY SO I HAVE NO DOUPT ABOUT ALL THIS FIGHT ON HIM. REMEMBER WHEN HIS BOSS WAS SICK, THERE WAS SO MUCH CHALLENGE FROM DEFFERENT QAUTER TRYING TO STOP THE WILL OF GOD BUT GOD PROVED THEM ALL WRONG AND SO SHALL IT BE THIS TIME AGAIN.

let take it easy.........

With God all things are possible. 2011 election "let us take it easy........" Nigeria ko ni baje Oooooooooooooooooo.

KICK_BACK

All the students shouting must have eaten two two plates of well cooked rich and possibly N10,000 each fromm there VEMPIRE OGAS.FOOLS you are they will use and cast you away in no time continue to dance with these mad leaders remember that soon the tree of incumbency will fall and you NANS Leader will run for your poor life.ALL our LEADERS are doomed for HELL and they will sink deep in shame for selling us to artificial poverty

NANS Is No Longer Relevant

It is an open secret that NANS has been hijacked by the Cabals in power and the Nigerian students are quite enlightened and privy to this demonic schemes.Nigerians are no longer blindly supporting associations or organisations claiming to champion their fights, therefore NANS in their support of Jonathan or any other candidate without credibility have already failed in its attempt to mortgage the future of their peers.

2011 election will witness an unprecedented registration and voting by Students not because of NANS or any other association or organisation but because of their believe in a credible candidate who understand their plight and aspirations and that candidate will be Ribadu.

Nans Should call its leaders to order

Call a special meeting and elect new officials who represent the voice of the students. We need to get it right come 2011 or we are doomed as a nation. and it starts from the grass-root, the voting students. NANS should not abuse the power it has but use it positively. Join the rest of the 150 million Nigerians who want and are hoping for real change. Stand Up for Something good NANS

Why did it take this long to criticize NANS?

NANS, these politicians have messed up your brain real bad. I'm sure money must have exchanged hands to come forth with the GEJ's endorsement. I am a university of Ibadan alumnus, trust me i know how bad you guys are corrupt. What has GEJ done to at least the educational sector for him to earn your stupid endorsement? i feel sorry for you guys. Your future have been mortgaged and you accept some paltry sum to endorse GEJ and PDP to continue the misrule? Good job to the ERC and i hope it's not because you didn't get a share of the money?
