Thisday/IPSOS controversial poll
WeBeNaija Blog

Following the controversies surrounding the recent public release of the Public Opinion Polls conducted on behalf of the Nigerian ThisDay newspaper by the trio of Ipsos Nigeria, Ipsos MORI (UK) and Ipsos Markinor (South Africa), we have been attempting to reach the officers of these institutions to elicit further clarity or ascertain the degree of their individual and collective involvement in the conduct of the polls and the subsequent tabulation and release of the polls results.

It is our considered opinion that any exercise or initiative that brings Nigeria and Nigerian politics closer to the modern and civilised era is a welcome development for our country and we would very much like to see those efforts succeed, as well as be transparent, reliable and trustworthy.

WeBeNaija has NOT formed any opinion on the subject, and have, therefore, not taken any side in the controversies to date. Simply put, we have been, so far, unable to make an informed decision because the requisite data to make one has been absent in the public space.

In our quest to be adequately informed, we have been trying to reach out (privately) to the officers of the organisations that ostensibly provided the technical expertise for the conduct of the polls, and our efforts have been fruitless to date. As a result, we are impelled to now publicly address the main head of the sub-Sahara Africa Ipsos (Mr. David Somers), and make the same request that we have been submitting to him privately, on the off-chance that he will feel compelled to answer in public that which he has refused to answer in private.

The following is the unedited copy of the email we have repeatedly sent to the CEO of Ipsos in sub-Sahara Africa. We are hopeful that he (or others associated with him and his organisation) will consider it not too undiginifying to respond to our humble requests.

Dear Mr. Somers,

We are a group of interested Nigerians writers and professionals who strive to present unbiased commentaries on any and all topical issues relating to the Nigerian Political, Technological and Socio-economical welfare.

We have been following developments in the recent Public Opinion Poll that your firm allegedly conducted on behalf of the "ThisDay" Newspaper of Nigeria. Given the controversies that have since been engendered by the release of the results of the said polls, and given our belief that IPSOS is a trustworthy polling firm whose transparency and objectivity are of paramount importance to its very existence across the globe, we would like to make the following requests:

  • Public release of the entire raw data of the entire polls - we are sure that you will agree with us that this is a standard practice, especially when the reliability of a given poll is called into question, as is the case in the ThisDay/Ipsos poll under discussion here.
  • Public release of the detailed cross-tabs on sub-population of the poll.
  • Public release of a clear and detailed description of the polling  technique utilised throughout the polling period. If techniques differ at any point during the entire exercise or among any sub-set of the sample, please state the variance where applicable.
  • Any other pertinent data and information that could help remove any doubt as to the validity, soundness, transparency and objectivity of the poll in question.

We sincerely hope that you will not consider the above as an undue imposition on your organisation. We are confident that you will agree with us that you are duty-bound to stand behind your polls by making public the pertinent information and data that could be examined and evaluated by independent observers and citizens within the community impacted by the polls you conduct. We hope that you will agree with us that it is in your organisation's best interest to continue to maintain your corporate and public credibility and objectivity and that the public release of the information requested above will serve those interests, while at the same time helping remove the controversies that is now raging in the country over the release of this poll.

We thank you for your time, and hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

WeBeNaija

THISDAY/IPSOS ON POLLS

I believe Mr. Nduka of thisday was only trying to be smart by using the IPSOS data to draw his own selfish logical conclusion. The polls by IPSOS, as shown on their website, was based on what Nigerians feel about the Government in Power and the Problems we citizens face as a nation. IPSOS said on their website that those interviewed do not even know who they want to vote for, so i wonder where Mr. Nduka made his own conclusion from?

Mr. Nduka, you have lost my respect, I would never read your newspaper again. You are a cheat trying to twist a simple result of another poll for your selfish reasons. IPSOS never asked people who they would vote for, but asked if they were satisfied with the present government under the leadership of Mr. Goodluck. I believe this is quite different from saying "WHO DO YOU HOPE TO VOTE FOR?"

MR. NDUKA, you have made me to believe what people are saying about you. Kindly desist. Yoruba Elders in their wisdom would say, a good name is better than silver and Gold. Your name stinks right now.

Otunba Olajitan Ademuyiwa.

RE: Why cry wolf over an ordinary poll

My people, don't get me wrong. What I am saying is that even if the poll was conducted at mama put joint at Ojuelegba or Transcorp Hilton pool side, it is a poll. What I wanted to see is for other agencies to go and conduct their own poll and show Nigerians the result.

@Sumanguru, It's true that Nigerians including myself (who was in secondary school) celebrated when Buhari struck. The question is, what it right for him to have planned and executed a coup against an elected government? NO. His lots should have been gathered and shot in a firing squad. In an ideal society, the Buharis, Babangida should be bared for life from HOLDING public office.
If you have a child that is performing less than desired in school, would you withdraw him from school and lock him up in a room for years till he perform better? NO. Instead you spend more time helping him with studies and encouraging him to do better. My Dad use to give me 1 to 5 kobos then when I present my results to him at the end of school sessions. That motivated me to study harder for better grade so I can collect my usual gifts. Ambrose Alli the then Governor of Bendel State was framed up and locked in jail for nothing only for him to die after release due to torture and ill treament suffered under Buhari. All their blood are hanging on Buharis head. Can you compare those people with the Same Buhari of PTF???????? who should be in jail??

What Buhari did was to send our infant democracy to alagbon prison while other democracies of the world where developing only for it to be released in 1999 to start from Kindergarten. He is also too tribalistic and fanatic. I would rather vote for Babangida as a moslem than him. He it was that introduced us into Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) and actively participated in it's activities. The young shall grow, Buhari time to go is now.

Had Shagari government left alone, they would have gradually matured and overcame the challenges of that time and be a perfect model now. It's like we started from square one when OBJ came back in 1999. Can you compare the 419s in government now with the NPN people then? absolutely NO. There were still many people with integrity and honour compared to the common thieves we have every where now. All the good men and women were locked away and many died by Buhari and co. So when democracy returned in 1999 only the very rich and fraudulent could afford it and they seized control. Don't get me wrong, there are still many good ones around like Fashola and Oshiomole and this Rivers Man. It's not their party I am talking about but individuals. All the parties are the same and so called opposition even worse. See ACN, CPC and others primaries! they made PDP look like the Vartican party. When Tinubu sponsored his wife and babes into all available positions. Look at Edo where the Deputy governor sponsored his relatives and friends into all elective positions.

In Summary, Jonathan/Sambo of the PDP is the best choice we have at the moment. Let's mobilise all and sundry to vote for them so we can have a prosperous future. As I would not want my people to ever be in opposition again, I am calling on all Lagos, Edo, Birnin-Kebbi  and all Nigerians to vote enmasse for Jonathan/Sambo. They represent the voice of the new begining for Nigeria. Buhari should be in retirement  now and allow the younger the younger generations to take lead. He should emulate the likes of Gowon and Abdusallam Abubakar. Support the government of the day with whatever idea or experience he may have rather want to be in charge. For a population of about 150million people, one opportunity is more than enough abi him name na Baba OBJ??

Ribadu was my other choice but unfortunately he is in the wrong party. I would have expected him to join PDP on return from exile and contest 2015 election. With the Northern factor, Youthfulness, credibility, appeal from east to west and north to south he would have being our next Presidential candidate and I guess President. That is history now but still have a good chance. His likes with Fashola should be the likely contender for 2015 as 2011 is a done deal for the Man of the Moment and history Jonathan Ebele Goodluck. Jonathan stand for all the minorities in the world, the down trodden voice that has been marginalised by the big 3. Yes we can!!

GOODLUCK JONATHAN IS THE MAN

All this noise being made by all these paid hands will end after the Presisential elections. They are living in space and hopefully should come down to reality after being trashed come April 9 2011.

GEJ will win across the length and breadth of Naija, so prepare to go to court. Jesters!!

GO DO YOUR OWN SURVEY

@WeBe Naija. Make you go do your own survey.

Why do you want an analysis when you can do your own survey. Yeye

@Sumanguru

>>>I believe you have lost the essence of the link by a Nigerian Abroad. I think what he was trying to convey is that the results and findings published by ThisDay is entirely different from the thrust of the real Ipsos polls.

Unfortunately, we are unable to reach the same conclusion when we compare the results released by Thisday with those presented in this Ipsos release. They both appear to be the products of the same tainted fruit. Going solely based on the Ipsos results as published in the referenced document, an impartial observer versed in the realities of Nigeria cannot but be led to belive that the Ipsos numbers are even more suspect.

Take for examples:

"...just over half (54%) saying that the country is going in the right direction, whereas only 15% feel that Nigeria is going in the wrong direction."

Without the ability to examine the raw data and polling methodology that led to this "result", we can only infer that it could only have come from either the stinkiest and darkest part of the human anatomy or a seriously flawed, defective and grossly unscientific "experiment" with potent hallucinogen.

"....as one in ten (8%) of registered Nigerians do not yet know who to vote for..."

Seriously? Even in the most politically-charged, -conscious and -divided country, an "8% undecided" figure is not only ludcrous, it is criminal. But, of course, we don't have access to the numbers Ipsos is crunching. In our own experimentt (sorry, polls) conducted over breakfast, we deduced that fully 98% of Nigerians have a hard time remembering their own first name. Please don't ask us what we had for breakfast, or whether or not we snorted or intravenously ingested the said breakfast.

Like we said before, we are reluctant to reach a conclusion until such time as we have access to the polls data, cross-tabs, methodologies and such. The fact that Ipsos is refusing to make those publicly available for independent analysis is troubling, and no amount of PDFs can assuage our discomfort.

@ WeBeNaija

I believe you have lost the essence of the link by a Nigerian Abroad. I think what he was trying to convey is that the results and findings published by ThisDay is entirely different from the thrust of the real Ipsos polls.

In other words the publication of ThisDay is entirely the figment of the imagination of ThisDay editors actively supported by Nduka Obaigbena for whatever reasons (pecuniary, maybe). Whatever the case, this new information is confirming that ThisDay is a fraud. Chikena.

WHY BOTHER WITH THIS ANALYSIS

PEOPLE, STOP SWEATING THIS STUFF, THE 9TH IS AROUND THE CORNER.

@A Nigerian Abroad

Thanks for the link provided. Unfortunatey, the document is less than useless if you are engaged in the task of establishing the bona fide of the polls results under discussion here.

This document is merely a summary of the RESULTS. Any objective and independent exercise will need to be conducted using the DATA, not the results. The data is what we are requesting from Ipsos and our objective is to conduct our own analysis of the input to confirm whether or not we can verify Ipsos/Thisday conclusions as published in their own results.

POLLS

I know about IPSOS, and I've been to their website several times in the past; since this 'Nigerian Polls' issue came up,I've searched that website many times ; there is no published report related to Nigeria whatsoever; may be these public letters of request will make them publish this report - at least on their website so as to clarify the issue and ascertain how scientific their polls were.
I just hope it's not another Nigerian scam.

Thisday as usual falsified the opinion poll

Thisday as usual falsified the opinion poll for money and to aid PDP election rigging.

Opinion poll is generally biased due to human factor. It is worse in Nigeria where such bias is always induced by monetary consideration from the highest bidder. The corruption that pervades the PDP and the brown envelope syndrome of many media owners and their senior journalists in the country will not allow anyone to believe in the news they published let alone opinion polls.

During the past elections, since 1999, before the first vote is even cast, Thisday and some other newspapers have always reported that the PDP is leading in all fronts, in all the electoral Wards and Local Governments areas. This was for the public to accept the predetermined results of the PDP and by the PDP as the party ordered them to report in exchange for money.

After the conclusion of the voter registration, the INEC told us that it has registered 68m potential voters. With the elimination of multiple registrations, etc. the final figure will be less than this. But suddenly we were told that the figure was now 73m. About 5m voters (73m – 68m = 5m) came in from nowhere. Today, the INEC is yet to explain the sudden additional 5m voters to the country.

This 5m from nowhere is what the PDP intends to use to rig the Presidential and other elections in its favour. The figure has been proportionately distributed in mostly the PDP controlled States. It is to ensure that the PDP candidates get the minimum votes of twenty five per cent in at least two third States, Local Governments or Wards respectively, to win outright the Presidency, National Assembly, the State Governorships and their Assemblies.

As usual, Thisday newspaper on 21-3-11 pre-empted with dubious opinion poll to backup the PDP intended election rigging. The doubtful opinion poll was meant to dispel suspicion and to smooth the rigging process for the PDP. Among others, Thisday’s opinion poll states Jonathan has 60% support among potential national voters, Buhari 22%, Shekarau 6% and Ribadu 5%, etc. As things are in the country, the past and present of Jonathan, and the PDP, how can this opinion poll be genuine? Thisday solely designed the opinion poll to prepare the ground for the PDP to conveniently buy some INEC officials and use the padded 5m fictitious voters to rig election.

Nigerians in general and at least three quarter of the electorate do not want to vote the PDP in for them and the country to continue to suffer. Nigerians are fully aware of the corruption and null performance tracks of the PDP people and their Governments since 1999. They are fully aware of the leadership weakness of Jonathan and that he is the weakest of all the Presidential candidates. A genuine opinion poll will not even give Jonathan 20% let alone 60%.

Ipsos and ThisDay poll - Is this a fact?

We also raised the matter on twitter (@nigeriapolls) challenging the result. We are not yet persuaded that this poll is credible.

In fact, there is a school of thought that suggests something different and we have run a small pol to on our site (link below) which is giving an interesting reading. We urge as many as can take part in this poll to do so. That way, we can even tell by ourselves through this media, the true representation of things not by some sponsored talebearer.

THANK YOU COMRADE ABINAIJA.

Jankara market polls

if their so called polls is transparent and credible why is it taking them days to release the qustionnaire and other data they used in arriving at this JANKARA MARKET polls....

Why cry wolf over an ordinary poll

you have spoken well. amongs the present set of presidential candidate Jonathan is the Better of them all, the best is yet to come.

@ ekpen

Bros, I dont know how old you are but I can tell you authoritatively that when Buhari and co struck on 31st Dec 1983, they brought nothing but joy to Nigerians. We all trooped out into the streets celebrating an end to the decadence and impunity that was the NPN government of that time.

Your poll among 25 of your carefully selected and chosen friends would have been extremely comical and laughable if we were not discussing a very serious matter that impacts heavily on our corporate existence as a nation and our lives and the lives of our children and generations unborn.

OPINION POLLS

EFOSA AM WITH YOU, LEAVE THE RENTED POLL CONDUCTORS

@Dee Man, That Is A Lie!!

Who are these people for God sake? The report stated that Buhari's Rally brought Kano to a stand still. So where was it reported that the rally was cancelled, Mr. Dee man?People please do not take my word for it, go to yahoo and search for Buhari, it is there for all to read.@dee, your attempted deceit makes no sense.

@ekpen, Re: Why cry wolf over an ordinary poll

@ekpen, Re: Why cry wolf over an ordinary poll.
The result of your poll is very exciting and possibly interesting. One quick question,
Do birds of the same feather flock together?

vagabonds in power

why will they respond.nduka and his goons in PDP will always try to maneuver everything.those idiots especially nduka obaigbena has always been a political jobber masquerading as a nationalist.our God will expose them as i am very confident of buhari winning the presidential election.the manner of crowd in their rallies is totally unbelievable especially when everyone is sure those people are not being paid like PDP does.

personally,i cannot wait to vote out any PDP candidate.honestly,we need a clean break from those charlatans if we truly want this country to progress.no decent person will contest on PDP platform because beds of the same feather will always flock together.

i am laying a curse on anybody who votes PDP especially the presidency and national assembly members.with the level of poverty in this country and the way all their bigwigs amass wealth even when some of them have no known business, the manner they celebrated a known convicted criminal in bode george, what else or evidence do we need to vote them out.it is only those who does not want the good of this country that will vote for PDP and i am sure they are in obscure minority, every right thinking human wants good for his country.

my friends keeps telling me that jonathan is our brother, that he is ibo, forgeting that orji uzo kalu or even andy uba, mbadinuju, ikedi ohakim are all ibos but were shameless enough to rape their respective states blind.one was so wicked that he burnt a whole state owned institutions down all in the name of getting at his self installed governor.we can never continue like this,it is only a mad man who does the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.PDP has been doing the same thing over and over to us and they still believe that that we are mad people.

jonathan has avoided any debate, even the one he chose its date all because he was afraid of telling us what they have done since 12 yrs or what he thinks he can do.

maybe,we have forgotten, the speaker, bankole told the presidential panel on power face to face that they should stop wasting their time because no body should expect electricity in nigeria since the people importing generators are more important than the poor innocent masses of this country who goes to sleep in this scorching heat everyday.he is a top member of PDP and those are the decision makers in the party, how do you expect any magic or miracle from a total Poverty Development Party{PDP}.

fellow nigerians, the ball is now in our court.the time to tell the goons that their time is up has come.Buhari has promised to probe all of them and they are all afraid.Go on and vote BB{BUHARI AND BAKARE}and i swear with my life that we will never regret it.those two men are integrity personified and corruption free all their lives.Buhari has been a former head of state, petroleum minister, ptf chairman, governor, yet he does not have a single plot of land in abuja or foreign bank account.who else has more integrity than him with all these positions,no one am sure.

let us take our country back and start making a headway like other progressive nations.PDP or jonathan will forever lie and turn us in circles as they always do.how else can one explain a president who is afraid of debating with his co-contestants even after choosing the date by himself.he knows he has nothing to offer, after eleven months, there is absolutely nothing to show except lies lies and more lies.voting for jonathan is voting obasanjo again and am sure no one wants that.

our time has come, let us expose PDP and their fellow criminals.nduka has a private jet, please tell me another publisher who is nearer him,all because he never relies in his publications.he knows his ways in the corridors of power.he assists them in laundering their stolen loots and gets his cuts, thats what he is living on and not newspaper publishing.the same with andy uba and obasanjo, who was broke before he became president, now he is almost the richest man in africa.

my curse still stands, anybody who votes PDP will never see anything good in his life.the person will die a painful and miserable death.although Amechi of river state is an exception.

It was cooked at Trascorp Hilton

They will not answer you because they sat down in a room at Transcorp Hilton hotel to cook the results for Jonathan who paid for it. Crazy bastards!!!

@Dumka,You Are As Stupid As They Come

What exactly is your point? In as much as you tried to distant yourself from the satanic PDP,the rubbish you wrote betrayed your ulterior motive.Do not come here to lecture us about what the opposition have done or failed to do in the past.In case you do not know, what you and your ilks are doing by writing and spreading falsehood on this or any other site for that matter contribute in no little way to the madness currently going on in Nigeria, under PDP's watch.

How dare you come here to justify this PDP mediocrity in the midst of overwhelming evidence of its utter failure? Regardless of how you may want to slice and dice it, falsehood cannot become the truth. And may the Gods of our forefathers and the blood of all the innocent victims of PDP misrule and failure haunt you till the end of your miserable life.

Why cry wolf over an ordinary poll

Nigerian policians need to practice good sportmanships. When are they going to learn to accept defeat even in polls?

From the poll I have carried among 25 of my friends spread accross the 6 zones of the country, my result is 75% win for Jonathan/Sambo. I spoke with my friends and relatives in Kebbi, Edo, River, Benue, Lagos, Ondo, Adamawa, Niger states and most of them are voting for Jonathan. What else do you want to hear??

Buhari is a Dictator and coup plotter who brought us here in the first place. Had he not overthrown Shagari, our democracy would have matured better than where we at now. No matter how he tries, once a soldier, always a soldier. Look around for Soldiers turn civilians they never drop their old skin.

Ribadu would have been my prefered candidate, he hasn't got the party machinery to win an election in present day Nigeria. Maybe in 10years time.

Rather than waste time screaming over the poll results, oppositions should be fine tuning their campaign strategies to turn the votes in areas they have poor results. Just my candid advice.

the only statement that makes sense here

this is the only statement that makes sense here.... The only reason Fashola of Lagos appears to be performing is because of entrenched opposition of PDP in Lagos. Go figure.

@Cranfield - Kudos to you

We salute you and people like who make the necessary efforts, against all odss, to help move this country forward in their own little ways. You are our inspiration.

Buhari wins in a landslide!!!!

Buhari wins in a landslide!!!!68% of the votes cast is no joke!!! A more credible poll by any standard.
