Nigeria: Boko Haram Widens Terror Campaign-Bring Attackers To Justice, Step Up Security
(Abuja, January 24, 2012) – The campaign of violence by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram, including attacks on churches and suicide bombings in the first three weeks of 2012 that killed more than 253 people, is an indefensible attack on human life, Human Rights Watch said today. The January 20, 2012 attacks in the northern city of Kano left at least 185 police and residents dead and resulted in the highest death toll in a single day since Boko Haram began its violent campaign in July 2009. More than 935 people have been killed in some 164 suspected attacks by the group during this period, Human Rights Watch said.
The group has claimed responsibility for bombing churches, police stations, military facilities, banks, and beer parlors, in northern Nigeria, as well as the United Nations building and police headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital. Suspected Boko Haram members, often riding motorcycles and carrying Kalashnikov rifles under their robes, have gunned down numerous Christian worshipers, police officers, and soldiers, and assassinated local politicians, community leaders, and Islamic clerics who oppose the group.
“Boko Haram’s attacks show a complete and utter disregard for human life,” said Corinne Dufka, senior West Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch. “The Nigerian authorities need to call a halt to this campaign of terror and bring to justice those responsible for planning and carrying out these reprehensible crimes.”
The group Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, commonly known as Boko Haram, has carried out increasingly deadly attacks, including suicide bombings, which killed at least 550 people in 115 separate attacks in 2011. In the first three weeks of January 2012 alone, more than 253 people have been killed in 21 separate attacks.
Human Rights Watch has tracked media reports of attacks by suspected Boko Haram members over the past two years. The vast majority of these incidents have taken place in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, where the group had its headquarters, but attacks by suspected members of the group have also been carried out in Abuja and at least 10 other states in northern Nigeria.
Many of the attacks in the past month have specifically targeted Christians and southern Nigerians living in the north, including the Christmas Day 2011 bombing of a Catholic church in Madalla, Niger State, which killed at least 40 people.
In response to the escalating attacks, President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency on December 31, in parts of Borno, Niger, Plateau, and Yobe states. Boko Haram responded on January 2 with a three-day ultimatum to southern Nigerians, most of whom are Christian, to leave the North.
Three days later, on January 5, suspected members of the group attacked a church in Gombe State, killing six people, including the pastor’s wife. On January 6, Boko Haram gunned down 12 members of the Igbo ethnic group, from southeastern Nigeria, during a community meeting in Mubi, Adamawa State, and attacked a church in Yola, the state capital, killing 12 Christian worshipers. At a filling station in Potiskum, Yobe State, on January 11, suspected members of the group opened fire on a commuter van full of Igbo passengers leaving the north, killing four of the passengers.
Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, in a video released on January 11, claimed that the group carried out the attacks on Christians in retaliation for the killing of Muslims by Christians in central Nigeria, including Kaduna and Plateau states.

IGNORANCE
It seems u dont even know your land as u talk rubbish about north. can u compare Enugu, Aba with kaduna or orka,Yenagoa with BAUCHI? Come to north first b4.
Lifting the Veil of Ignorance 4
That's the logic of the Northern elite in keeping their people in perpetual illiteracy and ignorance while they send their own children to acquire the Western education that would open doors to economic and political opportunities prosperity. The best hope for all the ethnic groups is a united but just and equitable ONE NIGERIA. The condition of the North 'd be worse than Somalia if Nig splits. And the South shouldn't think it 'd be free too. It should go and ask Kenya and Ethiopia how the famine and disease in Somalia is gradually spreading throughout the region.
Lifting the Veil of Ignorance 3
At least, the South can at some level of dev or advancement in the human development index however meagre. But what Northen leaders have done to their people is the worst crime just because they want their masses to remain uneducated, ignorant, poor and diseased so that they 'd always be subservient and vulnerable to political exploitation and can never rise up to challenge the status quo. For the day these masses get education, they become informed, and when they become informed, they begin to think, and when they begin to think they begin to ask questions and when they begin to ask questions they want answers and ACTION follows.
Lifting the Veil of Ignorance 2
When the Nig constitution proclaimed the country a secular state and forbade state religion, it indirectly empowered the governors to nip in the bud any agitation that could elevate one religion over others or create a sense of insecurity in other adherents. Rather than address their inability to lift their populace out of extreme poverty, Northern politicians with the conivance of traditional rulers began to undermine the delicate constituional balance that underpin the coexistence of the different religions in their states all in the hoope of diverting the attention of their poor masses from the brazen looting going on. You only need to visit the streets of Kano, Maiduguri, Bauchi, Yobe and Kaduna to know how much havoc Northern leaders have wreaked on their own people.
Lifting the Veil of Ignorance 1
Two important characteristics of statehood are effective control over territory and the monopoly of the state apparatus of violence. Hence even as liberal as the US, it is only state authorities like police and other govt agencies that can legitimately use violence - except in a Revolution. In Nig, for far too long, non-state actors, illegal entities have risen to challenge the legitimacy of the Nig govt and its claim to monopoly of violence. The Nig constitution has been the most subverted constitutive document at all levels and by all arms of govt. A group takes up arm to demand socio-economic justice: Niger Delta Militants. This is even tolerable because they are not authoritative agitators though they had legitimate grievances. BUT the very sad part is when elected Northern governors and legislators who swore to the oath of office to defend the constitution deliberately subverts the same constitution. .
Wat have u got from the so
Wat have u got from the so called Niger delta oil reach, I have been in delta state poverty has over take everything in the state, that why your people come to the north looking for job, I wish this country wil be as u want it, big fool.

Southerner and easterner are ready.
After all the toment and bruterlization of christians in the north expecially in the recent time has push us to the wall and leaving us with no choice than to stand our ground and face whatever that will happen. We have lost our properties and above all love, love once by the sect boko haram. The time has come for the christians inthis country to fight back with whatever measure to protect ourselves. Enough is enough. We have tolerated to our limit, we've been pushed to the wall. Therefore boko haram should better continue because when we shall strike, you can't count your looses. May the soul of the great hero rest in peace. Ikemba ojukwu.
Re: Jean Herzkovits & Co. and the Well of Misinformation
Jean Herskovts, Febab-Brown and James F. Forest have written ridiculous articles about the root causes of Boko Haram killings in Nig. All three writers attribute it to social economic deprivations rather than any inclination to Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism. Yet, this flies in the face of available evidence and documented admission by the group itself. The disturbing aspect of these articles is the conclusive languages used, suggesting even in the absence of evidence, that the writers based their views on facts. It is difficult to classify such articles as anything but intellectual mischief or some hatchet jobs for pecuniary gains. I advise these self-styled US 'expert on Nigeria' to read about Boko Haram and follow their activities and I am sure they would apologise for their misinformation stemming from ignorance.
tundemash, Did I hear you
tundemash,
Did I hear you say: "@Deri, Stanley Igwe, Ify-deranged and other fools..."? Who are those other fools? I hope you did not include your brother sultanofsokoto in what you call other fools. Tunde, say better because sultanofsokoto can be a good man when he wants to be. Don't paint all of them with the same brush.
It is an unfortunate fact
It is an unfortunate fact that the Yorubas can easily challenge and intimidate Dumbo Jo because he is weak, but they cannot challenge Boko Haram. Nobody is looking toward Igbo leaders because Igbo has no more leader alive. The death of our hero Ikemba had dealt a blow to us. Lord receives the soul of your servant Ikemba in Your kingdom.
O God give us a leader. Thy people need a leader now more than at any time. Thou knowest that we are surrounded by enemies who want our blood and downfall. Lord do for us what You did for Your people Israel. Give us a leader even if the leader be a woman as you used Prime Minister Golda Meir to save the Israelis from the invading Arab muslim horde in 1967.
SR please continue to enlighten us Nigerians

What Boko Haram is doing
What Boko Haram is doing today does not border Igbo people that much because the Federal government has done more evil to us than Boko Haram. Gowon and his criminal gang mustered all the powers, help and every resource that Nigeria has to humiliate or exterminate Igbo people. Every mother fucker tribe and their mothers joined hands with the Hausas to kill, rape, burn, bomb and starve Igbo people to extinction. All we need is to have some opportunity to revenge the inhumanity, injustice and oppression directed on us since 1967. Ms Awolowo protected her children and allowed her okunrin to starve Igbo children to extinction.
SOME NORTHERN GOVERNORS FINGERED TO BE SPONSORS
It is astonishing and unbelievable that Shekarau (Kano), Yiguda (Bauchi)and Shetima are Boko Haram apologists. They have been fingered to sponsor them in a new revelation by their PRO (Qaka). Yiguda even provide a training ground for them. Jonathan was right when he said his cabinet is full of Boko Haram. Namadi Sambo , the Vice president is a good friend of the Boko haram man (popularly called Babawo)caught recently in Trikania area of Nasarawa/ Kakuri axis with pump action rifle, guns, plate numbers, IED, axes, military uniforms, rocket launcher etc . I pity Goodluck bcos he is paying for the sin he has not committed. but be it as it may, the CORE NORTH is beating the drums of war and i fear for them
please let the country divide
please let the country divide we and the notherners are not the same, we dont have anything in common not same culture nothing is de same between the north and south .so let them go,
@ Deri the drunkard-Ure dumber than ur dumbo Jona
Aborigine deri, I can see that you have not stopped taking your local gin (kai-Kai). People should stop joining issues with this insane aborigine until He reduce his kai kai intake and is back to his senses to aleast understand simple primary school pupils elementary studies.
Let the war begin.
I am getting tired of waiting for war to start. This time around, I won't 3 years old running from one town to another every few months due to war. This time, I will fully participate in the war in any way possible. Please note the bombs will not land in Onitsha, Aba, Umahia, Enugu, Orlu, owerre as it did before, it will be landing in Maduguri, Kano, Zaria, Bauchi, yola, sokoto, kaduna as well. Also note "ogbunigwe" also known as "Ojukwu bucket" will not be used cruise missiles will be used. The Northerners seems to have the arrogance that, the war will be as it was 45 years ago. The British won't provide arms like the did before. Egypt will not fly your planes as the did before.
I saw things at age five that most people don't see in their whole life. It's almost midnight and the sounds of war are getting louder. I am ready.
WHICH ISLAMIC CLERIC?
Please sahara reporters I really want to know the names and identities of the islamic clerics that boko haram has killed. How many of them?
Is it Babakura Fugu? Please name another for the world to know!!! Fugu was killed not because he opposed them but because he refused in their opinion to share the goodies they assumed Obasanjo brought!!!
Let us have some objective journalism here and stop this nonsense of playing down the religious and ethnic cleansing going on in the country!!!
Nigeria is at war and it is a religious war against christians!!! Say it as it is.
Boko haram
Boko haram have demonic back up. But I know Jesus, d highest back up of humanity, wil fight 4us. Watchout boko, ur end has com. Christians, dont relent in fasting nd prayers against dis urgly scenes. JESUS IS OUR BULWARK
Darkest of the dark continent.
Out of about 1000 people killed by BH less than 100 are 'targeted' christains or igbos. Of these targeted, there are definite rumours that some are copy cat killers and mischief makers camouflaging to be BH. Yet 'Many of the attacks in the past month have specifically targeted Christians and southern Nigerians living in the north'.Is it that the people in the north-east are lesser human beings? They r being killed everyday, terrorized and traumatised by BH and JTF and yet media is telling us Igbos and southerners are the casualties..All this blame game just to try and divide Nigeria is babaric. People just behaving like animals all over Nigeria. No wonder we have the leaders we do. We are no better than them, kleptomaniac, greedy, bigots all of us. So what will change if the country splits? It will be the same story because the country is filled with disgusting blood hungry animals.
