Nigeria: Child Prisoner Free After 17 Years-Amnesty International

Patrick Okoroafor
By Katy Pownall-Amnesty International

A Nigerian 31-year old man who was sentenced to death as a juvenile has expressed his happiness at being released from prison and reunited with his family after such a very long time, following a relentless global campaign by Amnesty International.

Patrick Okoroafor was just 14 when he was arrested in 1995 and 16 when sentenced to death for armed robbery, a crime which he says he didn’t commit.

Amnesty International considers Patrick Okoroafor’s trial to have been grossly unfair and has repeatedly called for his immediate and unconditional release.

Authorities in Nigeria’s Imo State commuted Patrick Okoroafor’s sentence to life imprisonment months after the original death sentence was imposed. In October 2001, a High Court judgement pronounced the sentence of death on him to be unlawful, null and void and changed his sentence to detention “during the pleasure of the governor” – indefinite detention.

In 2009, one year after Amnesty International launched its campaign to release Patrick Okoroafor; his sentence was reduced to ten years. The following year it was reduced again to two years.  He was finally released on 30 April 2012.

Patrick Okoroafor featured regularly in Amnesty’s global solidarity letter-writing campaign and has received more than 10,000 cards and letters.  In writing a letter of gratitude in 2010, Patrick Okoroafor encouraged his supporters to not give up in their efforts of campaigning for him. He wrote:
Upon his release Patrick Okoroafor said:

“After Amnesty began its call for my release from prison, and after reading some of the thousands of letters, card and messages sent to me by Amnesty supporters, I began to hope that I would soon be free in the not too distant future.”

Amnesty International’s Nigeria Researcher Lucy Freeman said:

“It is fantastic that Patrick Okoroafor is finally free. Patrick was denied the right to a fair trial and was a victim of a miscarriage of justice.

“Unfortunately, Patrick Okoroafor was just one of many prisoners in Nigeria who did not have a fair trial. Human rights violations are prevalent in Nigeria’s justice system. Arbitrary arrest and detention, torture and unfair trials are features of many inmates’ experience.”

Something just occurred to me this morning to google for Peter Okoroafor and know the latest about him. I've heard of this injustice for a long time and I have always being optimistic of his total freedom. At last it came.Sometimes, I imagine how a court of law will sentence a 14 year old person to death without feeling any remorse. No matter the gravity of crime committed by such fellow who is yet to be regarded as an adult, the worst sentence that can ever to be passed is to sentence him to rehabilitation centre for a period of time before moving to prison after reaching the adult stage.Peter, now that you have finally been released from the cage of unknown tomorrow, be positive in yourself and move close to God and ask Him for the direction for better tomorrow. Just see it that your captivity was to avert danger would have befallen you.Amnesty International, thank you for all your effort and I pray that the Almighty God will reward you by Himself. God bless you.

WAS HE GUILTY OR NOT?

It seems the point is being missed. Was this guy guilty for the crime he was prosecuted from or not? If he was, what was the appropriate punishmet for a minor who is proven to have committed such crime? We need to be very objective in the way we react to issues.

NOW THAT PATRICK IS SET FREE KNOWING FULLY WELL THAT HE WAS PART OF THE GANG THAT TERRORISED IMO IN THE 90S, EXPECT OKOTOKO PART 2. SAHARA REPORTERS, WHO KNOWS WETHER ONE OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS WILL FALL VICTIM OF THE MAN YOU PORTRAIYED AS INNOCENT. MY FELLOW IMO PEOPLE, PATRICK IS BACK AGAIN, WATCH YOUR CHILDREN CLOSELY

Happy but..............

I praise God for his life but this should be a lesson to parents,to pay attention to what their wards are upto.it is not all about money.
May in Imo state still remember the otokoto saga which led to the imprisonment of this guy and the execution of others. Were those killed just scapegoats?Did Iwuanyanwu and the others implicated ever investigated.many lost their properties in the mob action, who instigated the riots? it is great God has given him a second chance but he should use it wisely and to the glory of God!!!!!!!!

OTOKOOTO: A rejoinder might help regarding the background

Yeah, I remembered the case, i was a lil younger then and can still remember how my dad narrated the story of the ritualists in the hotel where he normally lodged whenever he was on a trip to the East. I think writing a rejoinder to this issue by you might shed light into this issue and give the readers of the article a background information regarding it. i went through all the comments and it was only yours that differ, this might have been because of the prejudice about the Nigerian criminal justice system and police force

@Tafidan DDAJI
Stop provoking the families of dead by smuggling Almustapha's case into this discussion. Amnesty international stepped into Patrick's case. If you feel Almustapha is innocent, contact Amnesty International and state your case. But I am sure no one in his or her right senses would touch Almustapha's case. I don't know why FAshola is delaying the exection; he should have been executed like yesterday and people like you won't stop spreading the foul smell. Kudirat Abiola, Yaradua and others killed during the evil reign of Abacha are also human and deserve to live like Almustapha.

@Tafidan DDAJI
You are talking nonsense! Can you provide us the details of the muderer Almustapha's case for you to arrive at the conclusion it was miscarriage of justcee? The murderer was given a chance to defend himself but instead was he decided to waste his time showing Afenifere's video visiting so Rock when Abiola died. The case in question was Kudirat's murder and not Abiola's murder but the court was not deceived. Almustapha and his defence lawyer wasted the courts time bringing up useless injunctions here and there; do u know how many times the judges had to be chnaged because the murderer keep accusing them of being biased? So if he spent donkey years in prison on trial; he's only experiencing what he and his expired devil boss bequeathed to the country. STOP COMPARING ORANGES AND MANGO. I hope this your Almustpha piece has no tribal undertone in it. Almustapha is a murderer and does not belong among decent people. Please do not distrb our peace with his story !

REMEMBER OTOKOOTO AND IKE OKONKWO 3

The case went to court and Patrick was said to be under age, the cang alleged that he was one of them but he denied knowing them. It was also alleged that his rich and influential father did everything possible to free his son, but the anger of the people in the state made it difficult to free him. The father promised to do anything to free his son hence the campaign that started immediately. He was later reminded on account of being under age after others with him were found guilty and sentenced to death. The rest members were executed at Onitsha road, Owerri buy firing squad. God knows if he is innocent. God is a God of second chance. While I congratulate Patrick for this opportunity given by God, it is also important to know the background story.

THE OTOKOOTO SAGA 2

That night after confessing and implicating powerful people in the state the suspect died mysteriously in police custody. This lead to a protracted riot in the town. Many properties of suspected ritualiists were destroyed and many set packing from the state including Larry, and co. Around this time there cases of kidnappings and extortions. Some of the alleged kidnappers that were terrorizing the state for money were later arrested after being set up around weatheral road in Owerri and this Patrick was among those arrested. He denied being one of them but they confessed he was one of them.

REMEMBER THE INFAMOUS OTOKOOTO. BOYS

I lived in Owerri that that time and there is need to set records straight. These guy and his friends terrorized IMO state in those days. The little boy selling groundnut named IKECHUKWU OKONKWO was beheaded and his remain hurried under cassava trees in OTOKOOTO hotel in Amakhohia area of Owerri. The uproar that resulted as a result of discovery of the boy's head in Ikeduru area while the man in possession was washing the blood away in the river lead to the arrest of this guy and his friends. The man that saw the suspect washing a fresh human head of IKECHUKWU reported to the police which lead to the arrest of the suspect at the bus stop in ikeduru area of IMO state. The suspect made confessions to the police of his powerful sponsors. Among those allegedly mentioned were nwayanwu, nnogu brother to a then minister in Nigeria. Wait for part 2.

Nigerian Judiciary, Why Is IBB Free Of Killing Dele Giwa & Other

Nigerian Jungle Judiciary, why is IBB free of killing Dele Giwa & others? The Notorious armed robber Oyenusi once said, when he robbed and killed his victims innocent people are charged for his crimes. The Law enforcement Agents knew these to be facts because they are paid to turn the other way. All these happened during the government of the Northern leaders. The same thing is happening with the Boko Haram carnage. The sharia police commissioner Dr. Ahmad Gumi has turned the blames on those calling for SNC. It is either the Igbos or Ijaws that are killing innocent people in Maiduguri, Kano, Bauchi, to mention but few. This guy arrested & wasted his youthful years in jail needs to be compensated. Nigerians, please hold the govt. to do the right thing......pay this innocent fellow for his wasted years in jail. Coward Nigerian govt. will pay the Boko Haram for their evil deeds.

Which Robber?

Sharareporters check your facts right. This guy " Patrick Okorafor" was among Otokoto 6 sentenced to death by shooting because of their complicty in kidnapping and murder. His cohorts ' Chidi' Nnaemeka', ' Obidiozo', 'Amanze', were all excuted except him becuase he was under 18 age. They started the first kidnapping in Owerri. Their crime was linked to Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. Please report fairly for interest of peace and others executed because of the same crime.

Agreed,Major Al Mustapha's case is typical example.

It is unfortunately true that there are a lot of miscarriage of justice from our court rooms.
A typical example of passed sentences is the celeberated case against Major Hamza Al Mustapha and co. by a Lagos High Court early in the year.It was a case characterised by a lot of loopholes, lacunae, unsubstantiated proof but a judgment passed against the defendants(after 14 years of trial) without the prosecution whose onus of proof lies upon, proving it beyond reasonable doubt.Shame on the CJN!
I appeal to His lordship,CJN Mustapha and Mr President,His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan to release the Al Mustaphas within a minimum delay.

thanks

thank GOD for his life, his instance case is just one in a million,i pray you can still make the best out of the remaining years of your life, wish you luck.

Nigeria: Child Prisoner Free After 17 Years-Amnesty Internationa

All seem to be wrong with Nigeria, the Judicial system can dispense Justice: hence an Ibori James can escape justice while a juvenile called Patrick got the slammer,
Same for our Sports admin & should i say more our Health system(or lack of any system at all) has lead to the demise of Rashidi Yekini....Whatelse should we expect?

Ustice Nigeriana

Nigeria justice system indeed! Sorry for the likes of Hamza Al-Mustapha and thousand of other Okoroafors that are languishing at the whims of our so called leaders in Nigeria's prisona without the previlege of having the attention of Amnesty International. God de sha!

Thank God

Thank God for Peter Okoroafor. This is justice delayed but not denied. More kudos for Amnesty International, please do keep up with your good work. However, there is the need to look into the trial that convicted a juvenile to death while he was still a minor, this is barbaric.
However, let us continue to pray for the nation's justice system and we shall overcome one day in JESUS NAME

Meanwhile most nigerian judges are criminals themselves.

Most nigerian judges and politicians belong in prison themselves, they find it very easy to jail regular citizens but find it very difficult to jail politicians that steals billions including their own colleagues that take bribes.
