LL.M. graduate Gideon Emcee Christian (’08) has been awarded a doctoral fellowship of $105,000 for the next three years from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to support his thesis, “Sustainable Legal Framework for Transboundary Movement and Management of Electronic Waste.”

Now in the first year of his doctoral studies, Gideon’s research examkines the transboundary movement of used electrical and electronics equipment (UEEE), or e-waste, from developed to developing countries.  In particular, he is studying the situation in his home country of Nigeria, the largest recipient of e-waste in Sub-Saharan Africa.

One positive aspect to this trend, Gideon explains, is its potential for bridging the digital divide between developed and developing countries, and providing strong leverage for socio-economic and technological growth in the developing world.

The more pressing concern, however, is the growing environmental and health disaster resulting from unsustainable management of e-waste.  Gideon’s research seeks to study the global response to the transboundary movement of e-waste to developing countries and develop a legal framework for the regulation and sustainable management of e-waste at domestic, regional and international levels.

The Civil Law Section’s Professor Markus Gehring, Jean Monnet Chair in Sustainable Development Law, will supervise the thesis.  Common Law Professors Amir Attaran and Lynda Collins are members of the thesis committee.

Gideon obtained his LL.B. from the University of Lagos in Nigeria, and earned his LL.M. at uOttawa in the Law and Technology Program.  He is a two-time winner of the International Development Research Center (IDRC) Internship Research Award, (2008, 2009) worth a combined value of $100,000.  He is also a member of Nigerian Bar, the American Society of International Law (ASIL) and the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS).

@ Teeboy, Is this bad belle

@ Teeboy,

Is this bad belle or what? Instead of you to encourage this young man and make his 3-4 years look like breeze, you are there with all your bad grammar discouraging him, instilling fears into him about the length of his program. You are a sore loser. Are you sure that you obtained a PhD or pull him down? IN that case if you had been like us who spent about 6 years doing a PhD, you will advise no man to ever get there. But we knew that one day it will be over, and it was, and today I am proudly doing my bit in one of the world's great Drug Regulatory Agencies.

Get a life and see something good in others.

Congrats EMCEE.

I am happy for him. The

I am happy for him. The question is when will the Nigerian Government, private corporations and wealthy Nigerians start giving Nigerian Students scholarships? At least 80% of Nigerian doctoral students studying abroad are funded by foreign institutions. Meanwhile, we call ourselves the giants of Africa, what a shame!

The beginning of a long journey

I read some of they comments here and they make me laugh.
But what's really the big deal about reporting this scholarship? Nigerians are naturally brainy and they rise to the top when given the opportunity and if they also put in some effort.
This young man has just started his PhD. He has a long journey ahead of him over the next 3-4 years. I know this as a guy who obtained a PhD in Nanochemistry at the young aged of 25 from the university of Manchester. I also received a scholarship and funding for collaboration from various European research centres.
Today I work as a specialist representing my company in the whole of Europe.
When will the snoring Giant of Africa wake up and start bringing its young leaders home?
Young man, good luck but pls be steeled for the long, hard journey ahead. The lord will see you through.

Congrats. But really there's

Congrats.
But really there's nothing fantastic about what he's doing.
I'm a Nigerian and I happen to be in the forefront of scientific research formerly in Europe and now in the US.
Unfortunately, my country does not have 'need' for me despite all that I've achieved.
How sad!
