Jonathan and Banki Moon at the AU summit in Addis Ababa
By Reuben Abati

It has come to our attention that some media houses are alleging that President Goodluck Jonathan was "defeated" by President Yayi Boni of Benin Republic in the “contest” to elect a new African Union Chairman at the 18th AU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This report is false and is only the latest in a series of sensational and fictional reporting in a bid to cast the administration of President Jonathan in bad light. Let me make the following clear:

1.       It is not true that President Yayi Boni “defeated” President Goodluck Jonathan in an election; there was no contest in the first place and President Jonathan was not a candidate for the AU Chairmanship position.

2.       It is also not true that President John Atta Mills opposed President Jonathan at any time. Ghana and Nigeria enjoy excellent relations.

3.       It is true, however, that in the last week, some newspapers have been speculating that President Jonathan may be adopted  by the ECOWAS Heads of States and Governments to be the next chairman of the African Union, since it was the turn of ECOWAS to produce the AU Chairman for 2012-2013. Mr. President was indeed approached by leaders within and outside the West African sub-region to take up the challenge of leading the AU for the next one year.

4.       While appreciating this kind gesture, President Jonathan resolved that he needed time to focus on domestic affairs in Nigeria, and that it would be practically difficult for him to combine the three positions of President of Nigeria, Chairman of ECOWAS and Chairman of African Union. He therefore rejected the offer.

5.       In order to make his position clear, President Jonathan, in his capacity as ECOWAS Chairman, summoned a mini-Summit of ECOWAS at the AU Commission Headquarters on Saturday, January 28, 2012, to ensure that there was a meeting of minds on the position of AU Chairman.  His preference, he noted, would be for ECOWAS to adopt the leader of another country, in order to promote a sense of belonging among member-states. Nigeria, having occupied the position of AU Chairman four times in the past, would readily support any such country.

6.       As it turned out, the President of the Republic of Benin had indicated interest in the position, which paved the way for his unanimous adoption by the ECOWAS Heads of State as the sub-region’s candidate for the AU Chair. Thus, it becomes obvious that President Jonathan rather than being “defeated” by President Yayi Boni of Benin actually facilitated his emergence as AU Chairman.

CRASS INCOMPETENCE

This Abati (Dr) guy is quite trivial! Gosh, he is so incompetent or is that the hallmark of the Jonathan Presidency? Does he not have policy issues to attend to? Must it be him that responds to every matter? Is Jonathan too big to get into any election and lose? Nigeria is wasting too much money for so little and so irrelevant a service. We pay Presidential salary for ministerial-level output; Ministerial salary for a Federal Director-level output; Governorship salary for a Commissioner-level output and a Commissioner's salary for a State Director-level output. By this process, the Civil Service is nearly redundant. Politicians are incompetently doing their jobs while the workers watch in disbelieve. See the quality of ministers, commissioners, etc and you will see how low we have descended as a nation.

Abati should come up with somethg serius

Whether Gej win d Au chiamanship election or not that's not our problem what concerns us is how to tackle d problem of boko haram in d north i think dis what should be troubling both abati and president

You are a moron to think that

You are a moron to think that President Jonathan actually contested and was defeated as speculated by newspaper like Daily Trust whose only motive is to cast the person of Mr. President in bad light.

AU CHAIR

The special adviser to the president should always crosscheck facts. He should not give the impression that he does not have enough job to keep him busy, otherwise why devote precious time to trivial and unfounded toy issues from the rumour mills. He should assist the president to give detailed explainations(tutorials) to Nigerians on real issues , not AU chairmanship GEJ did not contest.
Issues of security, employment, power generation. Also why the Government should hand over power plants to private hands after spending billions on their installations.
Isuues of restructuring of the country, decaying inftrastructure and ethnic hatred should engaged on by Abati and exhaustively discursed.

abati send a press release on visit by GEJ abroad 2 d media

Buhari did not at any time fight corruption in 9ja. He was selective. His was to chase members of the UPN from power. Apart from that, on the said election of Yayi Boni as the chair of the AU, my question is how many votes did he use in defeating President Goodluck Jonathan? Even the main source of information at the office of the AU in ethiopia, did not carry such a story. Pana was the only media outlet that highligted the news item concerning the defeat of GEJ. SR, should have done well to clarify the story with Rueben Abati. But they did not. If ECOWAS agrees to have the chairmanship slot given to her candidate from the west african sub-region, then why should Jonathan descend to the level of contesting against a member of his own economic zone? It does not make sense. After Boni had traveled to 9ja and pleaded with us to help? Again the PS ministry of foreign affairs and his minister made a mess of the whole thing-as well as the Ministry of information.

Abati is confused

Hm...ABati. We used 2 bliev u very much.stop distrustin urself.

@ Ifeanyi-Democracy 4ever

GEJ would not dare contest because master riggers and the do-or-dieharders (Obj, Annenih, Uba, Mark, etc) of PDP can't succeed outside Nigeria.

@Ifeanyi-Democracy 4ever:
The difference is, all other non-SAINTS you mentioned are not ELECTED and MAINTAINED by the public. Armed robbers, exam cheats, 419-contractors etc are not ELECTED and MAINTAINED by public fund!

So, fraud and criminality is more painful when perpetrated by those ELECTED and MAINTAINED by public fund!

Haba Reuben Abati

Without mincing words, i'm highly disappointed in Dr Abati. Here is a man who was a renowned critic of Jonathan and his Fellow widows' wife, but has suddenly transformed to government apologist. Jonathan's house, Nigeria, is on fire; i wonder what's his business with AU.He should concentrate on the Boko haram fire that is threatening to engulf him. As for Abati, one fact remains incontrovertible, he will never remain the same again after Jonathan's presidency. I'm sure the Patito's gang, including Prof Pat Utomi, will also be disappointed in Abati.Abati is now busy defending the same government's obnoxious policies he once criticized on Channel's television, because he is relishing the national cake.Hmmm he who pays the piper dictates the tune.

I still believe that Yayi

I still believe that Yayi Boni crushed my brother Dumbo Jo. No amount of explanation from Ruben Abati can satisfy me. If Dumbo Jo won Reuben would be saying that he won by a land-slide over Boni. They took a 32-man strong deligate to Abysinia to carry my brother shoulder high after his expected victory. This means that the strong delegation did him no good. Let us accept defeat and ignore Reuben who is trying so hard to make this debacle look like victory for the president.

like Stanley Igwe, Ifeanyi-Democracy 4ever, Mr xyz and Pastor Tr

Sometimes, I find it extremely difficult to understand our people. Why on earth would people like Stanley Igwe, Ifeanyi-Democracy 4ever, Mr xyz and Pastor Trueword be condeming saharareporters for the great service this single paper has been doing to help Nigeria understand thier misconceptions about government? These guys have the world at thier finger tips - something called Google Search. for example Saharareporters did not publish the true story in the link below.

Political Restructuring is the answer, not use of FORCE or COUP!

Buhari's 18mths of War against corruption disappeared the very day he was booted out of office. Why? Because it was based strong personality and FORCE not system.
The root of the present CORRUPTION lies in the POLITICAL SYSTEM we run. A system where WE ALL SHARE oil money every month encourages laziness, idleness, unproductiveness, and CORRUPTION. We must sit at a round table and RESTRUCTURE or SPLIT. Restructure to make the centre less attractive, and let various states/regions CONTROL/harness THEIR RESOURCES. Let the state with massive farmland be compelled/PUSHED to get their people to WORK. Let states with mineral resources get to WORK in extraction. Let states with oil sell their crude and build refineries. Let states good at science and INNOVATIONS put their skills to use. If WE ALL WORK for the money, corruption will be MINIMIZED. For this reason I supported FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVAL. We cannot continue to LIE to ourselves, subsidizing CONSUMPTION at the expense of PRODUCTIVITY

HE DID CONTEST AND LOST, PERIOD

HE DID AND LOST, PERIOD

@Cappagh brigade..,good suggestion.Political Restructuring!

Clearly corruption is one of our major problems now. But remember that corruption was the excuse for the FIRST military coup in 1966 and subsequent coups, which means that corruption itself is AS OLD AS Nigeria. Unfortunately every attempt to use BRUTE FORCE or SHORT CUTS to solve the problem of corruption have virtually moved us from FRYING PAN TO FIRE. It is my humble opinion that if only we had kept faith with DEMOCRACY all along we would have PROGRESSED far far beyond this stage. The main ROOT of corruption, like you clearly identified, lies in the political structure. The solution is for all stake holders to sit at a ROUND TABLE where an agreement on a new political structure that emphasises less powerful centre, more powerful local and state govt and RESOURCE CONTROL by respective states. The present arrangement encourages LAZINESS,free oil money &CORRUPTION. The biafrans made their technological breakthru because they were PUSHED. If we dont push ourselves, we cant make progress

JONATHAN DID NOT CONTEST FOR AU CHAIRMANSHIP

I THINK MR.ABATI HAS EMBARRASSED MR.PRESIDENT BY RESPONDING TO THIS GARBAGE RUMOUR. WHY DRAG JONATHA INTO SUCH KITCHEN GOSSIP. MANY AGENTS OF NORTHERN DEMONS HAVE TAKEN IT UPON THEMSELVES TO SPITE JONATHAN ON ANY SLIGHTEST FORA, BUT GOD WILL SHAME THEM ALL. ABATI SHOULD PLEASE STOP REDUCING THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE FED REP OF NIGERIA INTO A PEPPERSOUP JOINT.

Since it was the turn of

Since it was the turn of ECOWAS (West Africa?), why should Pres Jonathan listen to "leaders" from outside West Africa (who "begged" him) to take the challenge of leading the AU for the next one year? That sounds untidy! When shall Nigeria know how to put its acts together?

Why on earth should things

Why on earth should things have been allowed to degenerate to this state of having to issue rebuttals? Why should Nigeria struggle with the Republic of Benin for anything, know how Benin has always supported Nigeria and treated Nigeria as a Big Brother? If the President was not interested, that should have been made clear in Abuja, before heading for Addis Ababa. This is another blemish on the image of Nigeria.

Mr IFEANYI YOU ARE RIGHT THIS TIME BUT ITS NO REASON TO BE MUTE.

My brother ifeanyi you are quite right on the proportions of saints to sinners in our country. The sad truth is that unless we have an Idiagbon like ruler, there will always be more sinners than saints.

Good to read you tackling our main problem, corruption, and i am sure you will agree  that our leaders, not just Jonathan, have been impotent to stop corruption and that we do need a redress board to stop this cankerworm which is the root of all our problems.

What do you suggest?

I suggest disbandment of politics and a caretaker board of Soyinka and other Nigerians that are well advanced cognitively to resist corruption.

Where are the SAINTS? 1

A stranger that reads comments on this forum may have the FALSE impression that Nigeria is a country of followers who are SAINTS but with BAD/Corrupt Leaders. Unfortunately when you search through the larger society you can hardly find the persons who portray themselves as SAINTS on this forum. To these sinLESS SAINTS, corruption applies to others not them and every person in political authority is CORRUPT and WRONG while those outside are SAINTS and RIGHT.
My questions for these SAINTS are: who are the PARENTS that aide and abate their children to CHEAT to pass exams? Who are the PARENTS that lobby and offer bribes for unmerited promotion of their children? Who are the CIVIL SERVANTS that request bribe to do their official duty? Who are the LECTURERS that demand sex or cash for grade? Who are the STUDENTS involved in cultism? Who are the POLICE MEN collecting N20 on the road? Who are the STUDENTS that cheat to pass JAMB,WAEC or other exams? Who are the ARMED ROBBERS? Who are the...?

Where are the SAINTS? 2

My questions for all those posting SAINTLY comments on this site continues: who are the JOURNALISTS that receive brown envelopes to write false stories? Who are the JOURNALISTS that collect bribe from politicians to ASSASINATE the image of rival politicians? Who are ATHLETES &WORKERS that falsify their age? Who are members of BOKO IDIOTS? Who are unfaithful HUSBANDS/WIVES? Who are the CONTRACTORS that give bribes to win a contracts? Who are the CIVIL SERVANTS that recieve bribes to sign contract papers? Who are PETROLEUM MARKETERS that adjust their pump to measure 0.7 litre instead of 1 litre? Who are the DOCTORS that abandoned their duties in public hospitals for other private businesses/clinics? Who are the STUDENTS offering sex to LECTURERS for grades? Who are the TEACHERS that abandoned the pupils in our primary/secondary schools for their private businesses? Who are the PHCN workers that encourages their clients to do illegal connections and steal electric power? Who are the...?

GEJ didnt contest??...for wat

GEJ didnt contest??...for wat reason should he contest in the first place?..his homestead is on fire and Reuben Abati is saying Crap...if he were competent enough(thats GEJ)...ofcourse he would have contested..
@ Reuben Abati, its amusing that its this same man my dad held in high regard for dishing out 'intelligent reports' but now??..he is as objectively foolish as a misguided puppet.

Gridlock Jonathan + Faka, Abati etc

Embezzlers, ole jaguda, barawo....

haba abati!

haba abati!

AU CHAIR

Haba,Mr,Abati we are not small boy wooo! Please you tell it to the bird.

sack rueben abati-he does not know his job

They sat in their cosy offices in the Guardian abusing leaders all over the country in the articles they wrote. But when asked to perform, they turned out to be as useless as the people they described as incompetent. Abati is not fit for the job he is hired to do aso rock. The Press release is too late. The damage has already been done. What was the Minister of information doing all this while? Drinking burukutu. Methinks Abati is just confused. He is a mess!

So what

I beg make i hear word jare. Una wey dey yan rubbish 4 dis sahara misreporters, na una no get sense. Who gives a shit if jona contested or not? Its a non issue as far as im concerned. Now back to more serious issues like the boko haram insurgency up north and unchecked corruption tearing this country apart. Thank you

A country of frustrated people

Because of the high level of poverty and joblessness in our country, many people are frustrated and to vent their anger they find GEJ name and sahara reporters site an accommodating place.
People like talking bad of this man and his government. They errousnously think we believed them.Sad and unfortunate.
As sahara loves reporting bad stories about GEJ let them also tell us the good stories of Nigeria.

"Special Adviser To The President" ...As if that was necessary!

Other news outlets (eg: pointblanknews, panapress.com) had a different view, the view of SR! The fact is, other Africans have superior ideas about leadership. He lost because he shouldn't have run given his antics. That's however, not important. Nigeria has daunting pressures that supercede AU wahala, and our troubles need urgent attention now!

Abati can continue to deceive himself with "special adviser to the president" bullsh.t, only a fool would believe any word from that useless turncoat. He has failed in that regard no matter how hard he tries. He's a fool, an ugly crumb-catcher!

There is not need for Abati to talk about Trivial issues

There was no need to start reacting to this mere issue by the presidency. There are better things for Government and officials to concentrate.

Whether he contested or not is not important. He did not make becoming AU chairman. Period!

He should concentrate in making better the life of his people

Pan African News Agency Confirms it. Jonathan contested.

Yayi Boni succeeds Obiang Nguema as AU Chairman

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The President of Benin, Yayi Boni, has taken over the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) following his nomination at a mini-Summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Boni's election came as a result of compromise by the West African leaders.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan had made a last-minute bid for the Chairmanship, but his quest was opposed by Ghana and other West African states which supported the Beninese President.

Equatorial Guinea's President Teodoro Obiang Nguema handed over the leadership of the AU and installed the new Chairman at the 18th AU Summit, which kicked off on Sunday, with the crisis in North Africa and the need to manage the transitions in the region dominating discussions. ...
