Visit To Police College: Again, President Jonathan Drops The Ball - ACN Press Release

President Goodluck Jonathan at the police college last week
By Alhaji Lai Mohammed

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has said that while President Goodluck Jonathan's surprise visit to the Police College in Ikeja last week, to see the decrepit state of the training institution, is commendable, the President again dropped the ball by his comments during the visit.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said instead of using the occasion to tell Nigerians what his administration will do to uplift the training institution and many of its likes across the country, the President chose to berate imaginary enemies who are bent on embarrassing his administration, and also questioned how Channels managed to film the rot in the college.

''Mr. President, those comments were totally unnecessary, and they put a damper on what would have been a great moment for you. A surprise presidential visit is always a good strategy for leaders to see things in their real state, without the usual window dressing that heralds scheduled visits. But it must be properly managed to achieve the maximum effect. Failure to make the best of that moment is akin to snatching defeat from the jaws of victory,'' it said.

ACN said the expose by Channels shows that the media is alert to its watchdog responsibility, hence it should not matter how the TV station gained access to the college or who was behind it.

The party said the President could still make amends by making a policy statement on how his administration plans to turn around the fortunes of the police college in particular, and all the police training institutions across the country in general, as part of an general effort to improve the overall welfare of the men and women who are saddled with the responsibility of protecting the lives and properties of all citizens.

''Subjecting police men and women to dehumanizing and demeaning conditions, the type exposed by Channels, during training means we cannot and should not expect them to be exemplary after their training, Nothing good can come out of what we saw in that college.

''Terrible as the state of the Police College in Ikeja is, it represents a tip of the iceberg when compared with the pervasive rot in police barracks and police stations, as well as the generally poor welfare of the police. There is no doubt that the pervasive corruption in our country and the lack of maintenance culture contributed to what has now become a global embarrassment to the whole of Nigeria, not just to the Jonathan Administration.

''Therefore, there is no better time than now for the Administration to embark on a concerted effort to reverse the rot. It may also not be a bad idea for the President, who was reportedly angry and shocked at what he saw during the visit, to order a probe into how the institution deteriorated so badly, with a view to prevent a recurrence,'' it said.

My fellow nigeria this issue

My fellow nigeria this issue of police college is not the only institutional in our country that called nigeria that like that most every sector in nigeria are like that, go to all the ministries they are all like that, go to our all higher instititution they are like that. Ikeja police college that I knew for long time when we I am young that is how it has been and now I am over 40 years now.

Perfect reaction! Must mr.

Perfect reaction! Must mr. President alway come out to embarrass us? If he knows that he is not comfortable with the camera, why grant interviews. If he does't hv record of his governance, why not allow people like Oknjo to answer questions for him. If he know he can not see the big picture of the issues bedeviling the nation, why not just resign. I am so tire of these embarrassments and decided to leave the Nigeria media space for GEJ and his senseless herd of followers and opted for international media space. Now he is encroaching into my space. can someone tell GEJ/PEJ to stay local and reserve those foolish Izon-laden English and incongruent ranting to those who care to hear their voices on only local media. The next time he come out to embarrass us in the international media space, the Police Training Collage will be a very small joke.

HAUSA/FULANI

JONA IS STILL A BABY, CANT YOU SEE HIS FEEDING BOTTLE IN OUR HAND? HAUSA/FULANI ARE STILL IN CONTROL OF JONATHAN ADMISTRATION, SO GO TO HELL!

Bojuboju oh! Oh!

Bojuboju oh! Oh!
Wanda na kama! Oh!
Nama na ne! Eh!
Naman dodo!
Gashinan zuwa!
Mr. lucky! So you dont care how you people live? Im sure if those imagies were not made public, your story will be different... You'll pulish your story not to seem as bad as what is seen ko? Please media houses there should be something like 'candid camera', only this time not fun and social purpose but for realy seriouse pulic issues!

God bless Channels TV

This is incredulous! This is not about Jonathan, but about a nation rotten in every sector. His otherwise commendable act has now been colossally dwarfed by his primitive, crass egocentric mind. He should be happy that Nigeria has such intelligent and patriotic media outlets like channels. Channels has clearly the moral and patriotic corner, while the President in his comments, which is a direct indication of how he thinks and how he sees himself – The Emperor of Aso Rock, and everything is about him. Mr. President, you have soundly exposed your core thinking, that it is about you, not the country. I salute the patriotic people at channels. Channels you have done well and we hold you and media houses like yours' in high esteem, because you have earned it. To the President, to partially redeem yourself, issue a public apology to Channels and commend them for doing the nation a great service. Thank you Channels!

Babangida's legecy

The delapidated state of Nigerian institutions, including the police and it's colleges is part of Babangida's evil legacy, consolidated by another insensitive Hausa/Fulani jihadist after him - Abacha. That man killed Nigeria both mentally and physically. Human memory is short but it is important that we do not point fingers elsewhere.

Stop whining

This zoologist should go back to the zoo he came from.

Is the issue how people want to embarrass him? Or about how Channels TV got to film? Of course it is neither. But our clueless wonder is making it about himself, not about the people living under those horrific conditions.

After seeing all that is it not clear that we do not shatnd a chance of having an efficient and professional police force?

Fix the problem, Sir. It is not about you. And it all comes with the job you fought for and are fighting to keep. Or you thought the whole point of the job was to chop money?

NICE STUNT MR PRESIDENT. CAN U DO SAME FOR OTHER MINS

Nice gesture mr.president only if you will do the same to other sector like our Education, power, and petroleum cos they are the key ministries lagging us behind today. But o doubt if you will, since yoou failed to probe the subsidy regime.

questions for the auditor general of the federation??

where is the auditor general of the federation? his should be the first port of call. funds allocated to the police college inadequate as they may seem, must be accounted for. the president should call for the last five year report of the college as a start.i am sure that will reveal quite a bit. maybe that was what he meant when he said attitude rather than corruption is our problem.

Is Police College No longer a public property?

It is indeed a surpriese that a president should wonder how Channels TV gained access to Police College and was able to make such a revealing recording. The question that readily comes to maind, Mr. President, is Poice College not a public property that access to the public is denied? Mr. President appears to love cover-up. I wonder how much of frauds the President would be covering up by way of hiding books of accounts of the federation. No wonder, he felt it was unnecessary for him to declare his assets to the public.

Rot in institutions

Mr President will find that there is nothing strange about this level of decay. One dictionary defines decay as "the process of gradually becoming inferior". It's all over: states and Federal Institutions from classes to offices(except Abuja perhaps ), from roads to bridges, from customs barracks to prison barracks. Everywhere! We all just have to commit to change. It's of course not the fault of this government. Nigeria is facing an epidemic of decay due to overcrowding, poor maintenance and corruption. It will be great if we encourage openness so that at least our leaders will know the depth of the decay.

May God give us the wisdom to do the right thing.

A typical JEG

Don't be surprised, this is very typical of Jonathan. ''flashback'' mnths back, on seeing the rot in the national stadium 1st hand, instead of dealing decisively with those responsible for the rot he decided to set up a committee headed by the finance minister, To do what if you ask me?. Fellow Nigerians am no expecting anything different, men of the NPF are treated like animals from training to retirement, even when they die in active service, ordinary burial expenses the police authority will not pay their impoverished family, not to talk of there Pensions where we here scams day in day out. ''''Jonathan shocked by what he saw at the training college ? I doubt .....

I am always scared when this

I am always scared when this man is to make an impromptu speech. I don't know about his aides. He often contradicts himself. Honestly, if this man were to be my lecturer, I would change course of study. I keep saying he must be one of the numerous quota PhD's littering our glorified secondary schools called state universities. As a teacher, he should have conquered stage fright by now. The shape of his mouth makes him look very awkward and funny when he smiles or laughs. His media handlers should tell him to talk less when he does not have a prepared speech. If he had simply said the administration will get to the root of this shocking exposure, he would have left the scene a hero. But seeing every criticism as an attack is a damaging mindset. Thank you ACN.

Na wa O. Did G.Dumbo.J really ask how Channels..?

Johnathan is showing himself to be by far the worst president to rule Nigeria forget what the North would have us believe about him. Since we Nigerians are a copy copy civilization, I don't understand why we never copy the right things. It's funny that Nigeria still calls what she has a Police. Why don't these mumu people restructure Nigeria's Police using the poorest European countries as a model even up to how they operate? Poorest because I understand Nigerians will rather say, "we no get money" when it comes to the most important things. Police there are well fed, body built, paid, respected, physically fit individuals working in clean environments with the right set of tools ready to fight crime anytime and anyday. The president should please ask to visit a Police institution on his next foreign trip to any of those poor European countries. He might wish to stay a day or 2 in detention. If the FG can't fund the Police, why not let states Police themselves. How hard is that?

PRESIDENTIAL VISIT TO POLICE COLLEGE

MY FRIEND VISIT TO POLICE COLLEGE WHICH IS ACCLAIMED TO BE A SURPRISE IS THE RISE TO A NEW ERA TO THOSE WHO HAVE BLINDFOLD MY FRIEND FOR LONG AND THE TURN OF EVENTS IS CRITICAL TO THEM. I THINK MY FRIEND MR PRESIDENT HAS WOKEN UP TO THE CHALLENGE AND HE NEED OUR ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORT.
A ZOOLOGIST NOW A HUMANLOGIST IS A DIFFICULT TASK KNOWING THAT HE TRUST THOSE HE DELEGATE AUTHORITY AND POWER. THAT TRUST HAVE LONG BEEN ABUSED AND MY FRIEND HAS JUST REALIZED IT. HIS ADMINISTRATION NEED TOTAL OVERHAULING AND HE NEED TO FOCUS MORE ON GOVERNANCE AND LEADERSHIP STRATEGIZE THAN POLITICAL FRIVOLOUSITY WHICH WOULDN'T TAKE US ANYWHERE.
THIS IS THE TIME TO LEARN LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE THE HARD AND ONLY WAY WHICH IS SERVICE TO THE NATION AND THE PEOPLE. DR GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN MOVE ON AS THE SOIL YOU ARE WALKING ON IS HOLY. NIGERIAN'S WILL NOT FORGIVE YOU IF YOU FAIL, I WILL BE ONE OF THE FIRST TO PROSECUTE YOU FORGETTING THAT WE ARE FRIENDS.

WILL JONATHAN STEP UP?????

We need more of these from Jonathan. As ACN said, it is important the presidency follow up with concrete action, or else the opportunity would have been wasted. And that will be a shame! I have no issue with what ACN, as an opposition party, is saying here. I still believe Jonathan can make positive changes in Nigeria. Whether he chooses to do so is another topic. Jonathan must take constructive criticism in stride and make something positive out of it. Having just praise singers around does not help the president or Nigeria. Nigeria needs true leader at the top and Jonathan can be that leader. Some will say you must be kidding. Well, it is left for the president to prove me right and them, wrong.

DIRTY POLITICS AT HIS BEST

All this is to take shine off what ACN consider a good publicity for the President. While some insinuated that President media handlers invited Channel as media stunt the questions how they got the news of the visit. May be ACN quickly brought in Channels which office is at Onipanu on ikorodu road after the President landed at the airport. What ACN CAN'T CHANGE IS THAT THE PRESIDENT GOT IT RIGHT AND DESERVEDLY RECEIVED KUDOS. ACN'S LEKKI- EPE ROAD HAD BEEN ABANDONED INSPITE OF TOLL BE COLLECTED. Shame.

Good advice

I agreed with u. I think the president should just finish his first term and leave. It is very obvious that he lacks capacity for the exalted office. God bless Nigeria>

Re Thanks ACN, Good advice

Mr. Jonathan insulted Nigerians

It is reactions like yours that make this country to continue to fall into descrepit, filthy state of decadence. How can anyone in his right senses condemn the press for exposing the filthy atmosphere of learning at the Police College where future leadership of the foremost security aparatus of the country receives their training. I think Mr. Jonathan is bereft of ideas and this just show how incapable he is as a President.
Mr. Jonathan's presidency is an insult to the collective intelligence of the good people of Nigeria. We certainly deserve a better president.

bad belle

How did ACN handle the Okada riot and the medical doctors strike in Lagos state? Did Tinubu the leader of the party not tell Nigerians that all the doctors should be fired and asked to vamoose from their residence? Jonathan has clearly shown by his visit to the police college that he is a listening president-and should be commended for that-ACN should stop pulling him down-cause these types of african politics is dead--died with the depature of our colonial masters--first in 1914--then in 1960

Thanks ACN

I was utterly disgusted when I read that Nigeria President, Mr Goodluck Jonathan berated Channels Television for this great job of exposing the rot in Nigerian Police College.  It just shows that this president lacks all that is needed to put Nigeria right.  He is such a nonetity and very uninformed.  I just lack words to describe this ignoramus.

It is really shameful to hear

It is really shameful to hear the comments of President Jonathan blaming Channels TV for exposing the state of degradation in which the Police College and the entire police organisation is. Instead of the President to immediately charge the Police organisation to get there acts together and get some top heads rolling for the gross neglect of their responsibility, he left himself questioning how a media station got to film the rot. This singular comment clearly reveals the low level of intelligence of those who are ruling Nigeria, from the President downwards. Presidents and Head of governments in other countries will call for a probe and complete reversal of the deplorable situation in the police formation but our own president has no clue what to do other than to have a go at the press. It is a big shame.

ACN Critized Jonathan!

Will the clueless ogogoro president listen to this constructive criticism from the opposition and quickly backtrack from his earlier senseless statements. As incompetent as he is, Jonathan would have used that particular surprise visit to "shine" but he blew it. What a square peg in a round hole!

what a shame

Only a man who has good charracter of leadership know that what channel TV did was for the best interest of this nation. If channel had not show d rot in that college the president wouldnt have paid a surprise visit. All i expect from Mr President is thanking Channel TV and set up and question d authority incharge of that organisation. With his question on how Channel TV get to video that place is going to be a problem for the median. God help Nigeria.

watchdog responsibility

"Thank you, Alhaji Lai Mohanned for using the right and choice of WORDS... That's the truth whether they like it or not"

''Terrible as the state of the Police College in Ikeja is, it represents a tip of the iceberg when compared with the pervasive rot in police barracks and police stations, as well as the generally poor welfare of the police. There is no doubt that the pervasive corruption in our countryand the lack of maintenance culture contributed to what has now become a global embarrassment to the whole of Nigeria, not just to the Jonathan Administration.

''Therefore, there is no better time than now for the Administration to embark on a concerted effort to reverse the rot. It may also not be a bad idea for the President, who was reportedly angry and shocked at what he saw during the visit, to order a probe into how the institution deteriorated so badly, with a view to prevent a recurrence,''

NNPC accounts office needs surprise presidential visit

NNPC accounts office needs surprise presidential visit too - I don't mean to help them burn the files though!!!

Why freedom of Information?

With due regard, I think the president should applaud or appraise Channels TV for the effective job well done, than thinking like a biased leader.

Why does he give a damn? Is

Why does he give a damn? Is the college not a public institution? Does he think that we do not know what is budgeted yearly for the police. Where does all the money go.
