Ilo-Awela Road In Ogun State: A Deplorable Road That Defines OBJ And OGD Criminal Negligence Of Infrastructure
Ilo-Awela toll road is popular for connecting many roads within Ota, Ogun state. It distributes traffic from Idiroko, Agbara Industrial Estate, Badagry and the international Benin Republic Seme border onto Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. More than Sango, the Ilo-Awela road is also plied every weekend by multitudes from Faith Tabernacle Church, otherwise known as Winners Chapel, as well as many other commuters. The fastest cut to linking Lagos from any of the aforementioned places is the Ilo-Awela road.
The choice of speed and the relevance of the organizations/institutions connected by this road causes it to bear huge traffic. If you ever had any activity at the Ota Local Government Secretariat, you have probably experienced this road, as it is situated immediately beside the Local Government. It suffices therefore to tag the road as an international carriage way and as such, should be one of the best tarred roads in Ogun State. Unfortunately, however, this road is the most neglected in history.
Showing off double statuses, the road is a ‘red sea’ during wet season, due to the absence of a drainage system. And in the dry season, a cloud of rioting dust envelops road users. The worst time to experience this road is the period when the Winners Chapel is having its festive ‘Shiloh’ program. Although the church has played a plausible role in the history of patching the road with sand fills, the road possesses deep holes that are only inches away from one another. Cars are carefully driven on this road as bestirred dust ride stately with behind their motion. Road users inhale an estimated ‘De Rica’ quantity of sand per journey. No known parametric technique can ascertain the mathematics of people weakening everyday by ingesting earth unconsciously while using this road. The history associated with the maintenance of this road is one fraught by deceptive administration of the former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, whose inglorious pseudo name short-reads as ‘OGD’.
At first, OGD’s administration deceived people by demolishing houses along the road. Inhabitants took him seriously on the project that never was intended, never was initiated. The demolition of houses ended the project and the Winners Chapel took it up, filling pot holes with sands occasionally. OGD, throughout his eight years was reputed for putting sand on roads in Ogun State through his OGROMA (Ogun State Road Maintenance Agency) to create the impression that he would shortly commence a project.
The sands usually end up being carted away by erosions.
OGD’s political godfather, Obasanjo, is known to prefer sneaking through Joju express link way, a narrower but partially maintained access road channeling few vehicles from the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway to Idiroko road. Throughout his administration, Obasanjo flew on airplanes to his Ota farm, after he was once trapped for only two hours in a terrible traffic jam, which was already a daily experience for inhabitants of Sango, Idiroko, Iyana-Iyesi, Oju-Ore and the entire Ota region. Inhabitants of Ota Local Government area say Obasanjo is the ‘most useless President ever in Nigeria’ and that they will honor him with such chieftaincy title, if he would welcome a ceremony to its effect. Till the end of his eight years of seemingly democratic rule, no good road led to Ota, the host community of his Ota farm.
Recall also, that the first fly-over attempted at Sango Ota by the combined administration of Obasanjo and his late successor, Yar’Adua, was half-constructed. On the same fly-over, two ‘illustrious’ sons of the land, former Speaker Dimeji Bankole and OGD, both of whom are currently having terrible corruption cases with the EFCC, fought each other to ‘commission’ the Sango ‘bridge’.
The duo were shameless, fighting to take credit for the construction of a fly-over that, even today, is still not showing any signal of completion in the near future. Grapevine has it that Bishop Oyedepo’s church was invited to join efforts with the Government in reconstructing the Ilo-Awela road. The church Bishop, understanding that it will aid his business, subscribed to the idea, believing that it was a sincere agreement. The church is said to have paid its part of the agreement to the government, and OGD’s Government brought some equipment to demolish houses, leaving people with the impression that work had started. But OGD’s government never came back to the road and places cleared supposedly for the rehabilitation are already having new structures and business shops on them. On the account of Government’s insincerity, Winners Chapel has refused other invitations to partner with any government on road reconstruction. The church has reportedly asked to be allowed to do the proper tarring of the road without Government’s partnership, but the government of Ota local government and Ogun State under OGD refused him on the ground that the man may name the road after his church. The lack of attention of OGD’s government to this road and refusal to allow any individual touch it has extended the painful daily experiences of users of the road.
As a result, the Ilo-Awela road has always attracted curses on OGD but accolades on the Winners Chapel. Everyday, users protect their nostrils from inhaling dust and commend Winners Chapel for the sand fills, while cursing OGD for putting them in a deep mess. Inhabitants and commuters describe Gbenga Daniel’s entire life in antonomasia with the the Ilo-Awela road. “See Gbenga’s life spoiling like this”, some of them will say.
OGD is reputed for telling lies, engaging in corrupt practices and using thugs to achieve his selfish aims. As people who backed his corrupt lifestyle during his administration now turn away from him and castigate him, it signals they were either under Stockholm syndrome spell or only wanted their share of his stolen wealth.
Gbenga is Very Useless
Gbenga Daniel was very irresponsible for neglecting this road. I will partially absolve Obasanjo being the president of Nigeria and not a governor of Ogun State but he could have use his position to direct Gbenga on what to do to this road.
Thanks to this writer for bringing up this matter on SR.
ILO AWELA ROAD
This road consumed a lot of things, Armed robbers / car snatchers killed people at will on this road beside the local with highest Federal allocation in the state. What a shame !
Instead of reconstructing a fairly good road in Abeokuta the state should have worked on Iwo Awela road. But the Governor's family compound in Abeokuta is important than Ilo Awela road.
I call on the Governor to give this road a top priority. Our Governor should deploy men of NDLEA to Otta and its environs, cos the way indian hemp is being abused and the crime rate is alarming.

Why would any one speak about
Why would any one speak about Amosun like D̶̲̥̅̊A̶̲̥̅τ̅ . When did he resume office'where there are so many projects to D̶̲̅ø . He Íڪ a Governor not a magician. Patience Íڪ D̶̲̥̅̊ virtue D̶̲̥̅̊A̶̲̥̅τ̅ we need
ILO AWELA ROAD
It's a pity that some of us are being economical about the deplorable situation of the said road while some know the truth but try to put the blame on a new government.
The question we should ask ourselves is-is this road not awarded as at the time the then government entered into agreement with living faith church?
Why the deceitful work of demolition done all in the pretext of ready to work?
Though government is all about maintaining the asset and liability met in the office but it has to follow due process especially when it has to do with a white elephant project of this nature. The sitting governor has to take his time to study how the project is being awarded, the procedure taken and why it was discontinued. For now,Amosun should be absolved of the blame of that road but we hope he will try and succeed where the likes of Gbenga Daniel and Obasanjo who ought to use his federal might failed.
ILO AWELA ROAD
The people of Ota do not like good road. When a son of the soil was Ogun State Commissioner of works during OGD's administration, the road infront of his house at Ota was not motorable. Through out OBJ's 8 years rule, the people never complained or cared. Why should Amosun care? Should we be sympathizers who weep more than the bereaved?
Iam at lost
I wonder why people are blaming OBJ for the roads at Ogun State. OBJ was the president of Nigeria not Ogun State alone. What is the governor doing now. I wasted my vote on Amusu beliving he will perform like Fashole since they are in thesame party but how wrong I am. The road leading to Akute and Ajuwon were I live now cut into two near the Zenit Bank , this is road is a fast developing area of the state, what is the governor doing ?? I am wondering if Ifo LGA even have a chairman.
Dont worry another election is coming and we will vote again. One thing is certain, THE MOUTH THAT EATS SO MUCH IS ALWAYS HUNGRY. I know the politians will never be fade up with stealing. It runs in there blood.
Only fools will be surprised...
Anyone who is surprised about the condition of this road needs his head examine. What do you expect from a man who slept with his son's wife? After all the billions of dollars he looted he still do not have a reliable road to go to his farm. What a twisted man!!!
ILO AWELA ROAD
Honestly speaking i think the issue of the road has since been overdue for comment. Sometimes ago Winners were trying to put the road in oder but the Local Govt refused them saying they should credit their account with the said money. The issue of that Road is SAD
Mr Anonymous, this road we
Mr Anonymous, this road we are talking about here is in existence before OGD and the road is motor able during that time.
OBJ HATERS WON'T LIKE THIS
OBJ never believed in tribalism that was why he was able to accomplish a lot for Nigeria. He is a man of vision and has been the best ruler dead or alive. He paid Nigerian debt which people said could never be paid. Saved $55 billion for Nigeria. He created conditions where every household now has a phone (there was a time, one could count the number of household with a phone). He introduced Nigeria to space technology-satellite etc. He created such icons as Dr. Iweala, Soludo, Ribadu etc. Does the man has his shortcomings, yes- he's human and a politician. In his time some governors did well- go to Cross River State. Others who were against him overtly or covertly did nothing and stole their states allocation. If he had decided to fix that road in question in Ogun State, his haters would be the first to condemn him. I'm not sycophantic, just honest and objective. Personally,I don't know the man from jump street.

Re sick talk
It is obvious there is brain wave in there no wonder u referred to true talk as sick talk. Surely His eminence cannot toll your view.
Shame on you all
OBJ is the same fool that was congratulating himself for saving 35billion USD for Nigeria and paying of our debts. Nigerians are in deed idiots ruled by fools you should feel ashamed of yourselves in the year 2011 look at a National road Idiots.
Otile ..... take note of this !!!
I hope Otile has taken this note of this article the next time he chooses to display ignorance to write the usual rubbish that OBJ "buttered bread" for Yorubas as the president. Selected individuals benefited from OBJ and Yorubas were the least even when PDP was in control of South West.
Those who don't like OBJ to be blamed because he is no longer in power fail to get it that the good or evil that men do will surely live after them. This is why there is no prayer for the dead according to the scriptures as the works of their hands follow after them. OBJ has his good points.
However, if OBJ could not rehabilitate the road that leads to his farm (which on point of correction is a federal one)as president, no wonder most federal roads became hell on earth? Now is the time to reprimand OBJ because OBJ sycophants will tell us that "you do not talk ill of the dead" once OBJ dies.
The deed is done and will
The deed is done and will need to forge ahead. The incumbent governor can still come to the rescue of the masses and the earlier this is done the better.
Sick Talk
Glory!!! Your uncoth language on papa smacks up an idle brain. Refer to attempting to assist worshippers as "helping his business" is evil of you! Better wake up to the reality of the WAVES OF GLORY!
@Sean, thank you very much
@Sean, thank you very much for comments, everyone will continue blaming OBJ for everything even if they can not urinate or impregnate their wife.
This so call road (Ilo Awela) is State road which OGD suppose to have repair long time ago but for his stupidity and that of the Local Government Chairman under Dr Salami (now deceased) and Mr Tella (Fuji Musician turn Politician).
The most annoying thing was that Bishop Oyedepo of Winner Chapel wanted to do this road with his own money and this animal in human Skin(OGD and Tella) ask the man of God to pay the construction money into Government account for them to construct the road, this people are rogue.
The funny thing is that over
The funny thing is that over 40% of revenue/employment generating industries in Ogun State not to talk of the Idi Iroko International Border are located along this axis. Forget that Obj's farm is here, how dumb or out of synch do you have to be not to develop this area? Unfortunately this is a snapshot of the way we are ruled in Nigeria. Hold on! I forgot to ask, how many times have contracts being issued and funds released at both National & State levels of government for the development of transport infrastructure here? These guys should be committed to asylums!!
Why blame OBJ?
OBJ is everybody's whipping child. Why blame OBJ for what Gbenga Daniel refused to do. Daniel got Ogun State allocation from the Feds. Remember OBJ tried to force those thieving governors to build health centers in every local government area, guess what, Yar'Adua another another good for nothing governor who later became the president helped them to kill that idea. C'mon, give the old man a break.
DONT BLAME GBENGA
WHAT LEADERSHIP SKILLS DOES OGD POSESS TO RULE OGUN STATE? HE WAS NOMINATED BY OBJ SO I WAS NOT SURPRISED DAT HE DID NOT PERFORM HE HAS A LOT TO ANSWER FROM EFCC. MAY GOD ALMIGHTY NEVER ALLOW PEOPLE LIKE GBENGA WHO HAS NO ELEMENT OF HUMAINESS IN HIM OCCUPY PUBLIC OFFICE AGAIN.AmenR
All hail Afenifere?
Under the leadership of Mr. Fasoranti who thinks OGD is being persecuted. These are the "afenimafere elders" of the Yorubaland who gladly trample on the poor in Yorubaland in order to pay obeisance to known thieves. Welcome to Odua Republic
re; ile-awela road
you guys need to be more objective and focus on recent happenings, and personal attack on individuals who are not on your good book. But you, should realise that this road has been in existence before the duo of OBJ and OGD what happen to other govs not to fix the road before them.
