LASTMA's Endless Farce On Eko Bridge
As a daily user of Eko bridge I think it is high time the authorities examine the farce that recreates itself every morning on Eko bridge.
The essential purpose for setting up LASTMA is supposed to be that they will ensure free and fast flow of traffic and definitely not for they to become the ones causing a gridlock on the road. Unfortunately the LASTMA officials on Eko bridge are the number one cause of hold ups on the bridge. Firstly, immediately after the incoming road from Apapa the LASTMA officials station themselves in large numbers issuing contradictory instructions to road users. The whole purpose of these instructions is to arrest people on allegation of commital of indecipherable offences. Once they are able to stop a vehicle right in the middle of the road, they have acheived their purpose.
The road is then turned into a one lane road, as the "offending driver" will refuse to allow them into his car. This therefore helps the LASTMA officals to totally paralyze traffic on the road.
One amazing feature of this daily occurence is that the other numerous LASTMA officials instead of assisting to remove the "offending vehicle" all start heading towards Alaka with the hope that some motorists caught in the gridlock will offend the no driving on the
BRT lane rule. As is to be expected, some motorists will of course offend this rule. Invariably they stop the new offender on one lane again, thereby multiplying the hold up exponentially. This hold up regularly streaches to Alaka and enables the LASTMA men to widen the area for further arrests. The net effect of this is that even the BRT buses for whose benefit the no driving on the BRT route was made are caught up at Alaka on the two lane part of the road.
The honest truth is that there is absolutely no reason for hold ups to occur on Eko bridge. Before the coming of LASTMA to the bridge, hold ups were a rarity on top of that bridge and will only occur when a vehicle breaks down. Since LASTMA descended on that bridge, interminable hold ups on the bridge is a daily occurence. The askance looks on the faces of the so called traffic officials, leaves absolutely no doubt that their primary objective is to cause hold ups and definitely not to clear them.
It is my considered opinion that these LASTMA men desecrate the good work being carried out by other LASTMA officials in Lagos State, sometimes at great risk to their lives and limbs. They also desecrate the excellent work being carried out all over Lagos by his excellency, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Tunde Fashola. As a stakeholder, I am urging the Governor to immediately call these LASTMA officials to order. There must be a better and smatter way of arresting offenders in a mega city like Lagos, rather than using their vehicles to narrow Eko bridge into a one lane road, and it is the duty of these LASTMA officials to think up these alternative methods. The general public should not be made to suffer because of the incompetence or delibrate greed of LASTMA officials

The menace of LASTMA officials
I own a small transport business in Lagos and sincerely speaking, the introduction of LASTMA, though with wholesome intentions, has given rise to a nightmarish situation to commuters, commercial vehicle drivers and owners alike. Often, LASTMA officials would interprete the highway regulations towards their own financial benefit. In so doing, they not only inspire dislike and disrespect on the public, they also aggravate the very ill which is the Lagos Metropolitan traffic congestions: the foremost rationale I believe for which LASTMA was created.
Whilst I congratulate the able governor of the state for his vision in creating LASTMA, I urge him to set aside resources towards the training and monitoring of LASTMA officials. It is simply unethical that LASTMA officials are being permitted to operate arbatrarily. It is unhealthy for the economy and people of Lagos State.
LASTMA OFFICIAL
infact ibelieve in all the above comment , they are just one of the epileptic that is affecting the free flow of trafic in lagos state.God will deliver us from them they are lagos legal tout and estoltion marchine.
AFTER MY PERSONAL ENCOUNTERS
AFTER MY PERSONAL ENCOUNTERS WITH LASTMA, I FELT IT WAS OKAY FOR ME TO ASSASSINATE THE GOVERNOR ORF LAGOS, TO KILL ANY LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENT, TO DESTROY GOVERNMENT PROPERTY. I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST THESE PEOPLE BUT WHEN THEIR AGENTS TREAT YOU WITHOUT ANY RESPECT FOR HUMAN DIGNITY AND JUSTICE, YOU FEEL THEY DESERVE TO BE CRUSHED. THIS IS JUST AN IDEA AND WITH TIME WHO KNOWS I MAY DECIDE TO EXPERIMENT.
The concern I have always had
The concern I have always had on this issue is that "Is there anywhere in the world there are dedicated lanes on Bridges?" Someone should pls help me out.
They have recruited never do
They have recruited never do wells and drug addicts who must take drugs at the end of the day.so they have to arrest people, extort bribes to raise money to satisfy their addiction.Does the Governor have the will to punish this people.Young Arabamen is not always in the office when you want to take reports to him.Even if you meet him what can he do??The Governor should weed out never do wells from the rank and file in LASTMA
RE: LASTMA- PLEASE GOVERNOR FASHOLA TO CALL THESE MEN TO ORDER
I have read appalling news about LASTMA in the past few days. I believe the purpose of Governor Fashola for setting up LASTMA was to improve the traffic situation but this is not happening. They are quite oppressive and lawless and seem above the law. It is a shame that anyone in uniform easily gets away with wrongfully accusing citizens and the people have no hope for justice.
I think Governor Fashola should cap his legacy with respect for human rights by ensuring that officers who represent him do a proper job otherwise he will have to take the blame. There are too many complaints to be ignored. They are just another version of the Nigerian Police collecting bribe this time more easily so because poor people do not have the N50,000 fine proscribed for traffic offences. I think that fine is outrageus and does not fit the offence. In most civilized countries traffic fines are usually within the reach of the offender, the government does not expect you to pay over 500% of minimum wage otherwise how do you survive the rest of the month. These fines will not deter offences but rather promote bribery which I think is happening for the most part except in the recent case of Citizen Iko.
I believe Lagos State Government needs to do her homework with LASTMA first by educating them and all Government officials on politeness and respect f human rights. Also the Government needs to put proper signs and educate its officials on how they should be used so they know what a true traffic offence is. They are so eager for people to offend, Nigeria especially LAGOS is quite stressful and I wonder if we consider what impression all the bad behaviour creates to foreigners. As well, the replacement RED sign by LASTAMA in Citizen Ikos case is still under a tree. Can someone please go place that sign properly, I maintain that hiding a sign defeats its purpose. Please LASTMA leadership look up traffic sign placement in other countries, use the internet or buy training materials or bring someone to help out. Let us stop this oppression of our people. If Governor Fashola were to receive 10% of LASTMA oppression under any circumstances in UK, USA or Canada, he will think something is wrong with their system because he knows that for the most part they do not oppress citizens even when they are offenders, they accord them due respect and acknowledge their basic legal and fundamental human rights.
Please Governor Fashola investigate LASTMA now or else your reputation will be tarnished as codoning this type of behaviour. Also it will leave little to be desired of your agitation for State Runned Police because if you are not able to get LASTMA to behave then we should expect Tiwan-Tiwa Lagos Police. However, I hold you in much more regard and still think you are one of the very few governing in Nigeria right now but do not base your standards on Status-Quo as Nigeria will be redeemed from the current anarchy, so place your name in gold as one of those that will achieve that goal. Listen and Act upon the cry of your people, that is what good leadership is all about, do not wait for your officers to bring issues to your notice because that does not happen easily in Nigeria. Go to the slums, find out the imapct of your policies and actions directly from LAGOS STATE CITIZENS. They got you to Government house and hopefully you are counting on them to get you back to complete your good agenda.
God bless Governor Fashola! God Bless Lagos State!!, God bless Nigeria!!!
LASTMA OFFICIALS
It goes to show the level of understanding of our road traffic officers. The State Government should look into this so that lagosians would not one day take the laws into their hands and gang up against this injustice that So-Called LASTMA Men commit everyday of the week. There should not be Hold-UP on that road
LASTMA's Endless farce on Eko Bridge
Emeka, I wholly support you on this. From my observation, they are mostly on the road on fridays and prior to any public holidays. I tactically collected personal datas of some of this operatives. One very recuring face in this scheme is one RAFIU alway dressed in LASTMA uniform. Another common face is KUNLE whose phone number is 0806 487 8795. Kunle is always on blue T-shirt(another uniform). Eko bridge is the best route to the Island, but the activities of these LASTMA "operatives" (i'm not going to call them names yet, hoping the authority would do something about them) is constituting a nuisance.
Same Situation between Ojota and Maryland
This is the exact situation when you drive in from Ojota axis into Maryland in the late afternoons. LASTMA officials deliberately cause traffic so that impatient drivers enter into the BRT lane. They then apprehend such offenders for breaking the law. It is amazing that the traffic ahead of the LASTMA barricade is so so free, it's unbelievable.
After witnessing this two afternoons in a row, I had to get in touch with Channels TV whose office is just across the road from where this illegality takes place.
