Beaten But Not Disgraced
‘BREAKING NEWS: FIFA has approved that Nigeria can use two goalkeepers against Argentina today!’ The foregoing was the sms message being sent around in Nigeria a few hours before the 2010 World Cup opening match against Argentina. The same text message was sent to many Nigerians in South Africa. At the end, it took only one goalkeeper in Vincent Enyeama (officially crowned man of the match) to stop Messi from scoring!
Even though the match eventually ended one goal to nil in favour of Argentina, on the balance of play, Nigeria performed so well that with a little bit of luck, the result could have been different.
At the end, the Argentine players were very jubilant knowing they came against a formidable opponent.
What is now very clear is that with Coach Lagerback, the Super Eagles now presents a strong enough squad to go beyond the first round. He has assured that preparations for the next match against Greece begin immediately.
The match was watched by many prominent Nigerians, from politicians to royal fathers and the consensus was that while we may have lost, our boys gave a good account of themselves.
