Controversial Egyptian Referee Booted From Africa Cup

Egyptian referee, Ghead Grisha, who was at the centre in the Group C match between Nigeria and Cup holders Zambia in Nelspruit on Friday, has been sacked from the 29th Africa Cup of Nations.

Grisha hugged the headlines on the negative side when he awarded a highly controversial penalty against the Super Eagles four minutes from time.  The resulting goal enabled the champions to draw level in the game at Mbombela Stadium.

A top official of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed on Sunday that the 36-year old, who became an international referee in 2008, will take no further part in the on-going championship in South Africa.

“He has been sent home. He will have no further action at this Cup of Nations. His decisions did not tally with best practices of the refereeing profession and we would not allow anyone to start re-writing the rules of the game here,” said the official.

CAF’s decision came as the Super Eagles settled down at their Hunters’ Rest abode in Rustenburg ahead of Tuesday’s must-win final Group C clash with the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace.

If Nigeria wins the tie, it will move into the second round of the competition.

So, of what use is his sack

So, of what use is his sack from the Nations Cup to Nigeria? This man had added more salts into injury for the Super Eagles. He had compounded their nightmares. At least, he would have allowed them to win that match so that they can continue to wobble and fumble in the tournament untill when they are finally exposed by a more compact team.

@ ole(thief) Ku(death) Zidane

@ ole(thief) Ku(death) Zidane is a muslim & one of d best player in history of football. Olodo

I want to know.

Though I have confirmed the news but what I want to know is.
Did the sack the man because of that officiating of the Nigerian match with Burkina faso or is that CAF want to reduce there referees since 1/2 of the team will be going home this week so they do not need much of the officials so the man was among the referees going home and we are here celebrating that we have got our revenge. Please can some one who know explain to me.

DID SAME REFEREE NOT AWARD A PENALTY TO NIGERIA

Same referee also awarded a penalty to Nigeria which Nigerian superstar and current European champion, Jon Mikel Obi failed to convert. Why are Nigerians forgetting this and crucifying him because the Zambians converted their own penalty? If Mikel had scored his penalty, the Zambian penalty would not have mattered. This is bad- belle a la BAD LOSERS.

Egyptian Refree

The Egyptian refree, Grisha, should not only be sent home but banned for life, and fined also.

true

Yes the news was correct, I have heard about the sack of that pig from Brila FM this morning.

Soccer: Replay Technology

It is about time Soccer governing body introduce replay technology into the game. Thats why I like basketball. Soccer rules is boring and absolute primitive.

Stupid referee

The most pathetic about it all is that this country is very good about wasting time. We waste time regarding every aspect of our national life, leading to the loss of lives, trillions of Naira and a loss of pride as a nation. Yet, when it actually pays to waste time, we are not good at it. What an irony!!!

Referee Ghead Grisha, Nigeria and AFCON (6)

At the current AFCON, Nigerian players again exhibited this tendency of failing to know when it pays to waste time. Playing against Burkina Fasso and leading by a lone goal, all the Super Eagles needed to do was let the time run up. Alas, the Super Eagles repeated the same mistake of the past by allowing the Burkinabe players to tie the game, due to lack of tactical superiority.

Why was he assigned to

Why was he assigned to referee the game in the first place. When did the mohammedans began to know about soccer. Sport ain't one of their preferences in life. He sure only know how to recite the quran, throw bombs and the use of dagger. I don't blame him though. I only blame the moron CAF boss Issa Hayatou who has refused to resign. He has turn CAF to his personal property. He's a typical mallam. For CAF to move forward Hayatou must give way for a new management. They always want to be in power always. We saw how raghead Gaddafi was killed like a cockroach just because he wanted to remain in power. To these mallams power is a do or die thing. Thats why they want to send GEJ back to the creeks. To them Aso rock is their home. They forgot that the oil money they use to go for hajj and for marrying numerous wives came from his backyard. You see, naija must be divided, like it or not.

Alas, what happened was that the nearest Nigerian player took the throw, the Tunisians recovered possession and went on to score! The match was tied 2-2. It was the last match between Nigeria and Kenya on November 14, 2009 that afforded us the opportunity to qualify when we defeated Kenya away by 3 goals to 2 while Mozambique helped us by defeating Tunisia by 1 goal to 0. Had Tunisia won that match against Mozambique, we would not have qualified, even if we had defeated Kenya by 20 goals to nothing!

Referee Ghead Grisha, Nigeria and AFCON (4)

In one of the matches played in the last World Cup qualification, we were leading Tunisia by 2 goals to 1 with just a few minutes remaining. This was a match we needed to win, to guarantee qualification. There was a throwing to Nigeria that afforded us the chance to waste a few more seconds. You would expect the players to understand this, and to have practised what to do in such a situation. The correct thing to do was for the player farthest from the ball to come and throw the ball. There is no law that says a particular player has to throw the ball.

When does it pay to waste time? When a match is time-based, like in soccer, it pays to waste time when you are leading. All teams, even the glorious Barcelona Club and successful national teams like Brazil, Spain and Germany do it all the time.
But what do we have with the Nigerian team? We make haste to play the ball at times when all we need to do is play for time. This is in contrast to the national pastime of wasting time and not achieving anything, like we have hardly achieved anything in the last fifty-two years.

Referee Ghead Grisha, Nigeria and AFCON (2)

I wonder if Nigeria lodged a protest about the match, or how come the referee was sanctioned. Was it CAF that took it upon themselves to subject the referee to a penalty (all puns intended)?
I will also like to say that we (Nigerians) put ourselves into the situation in which we now find ourselves. We are usually a nation of time wasters. However, when it comes to waste time productively, we are found wanting.

Referee Ghead Grisha, Nigeria and AFCON (1)

I watched parts of the match between Nigeria and Zambia online. I saw the penalty awarded to the Zambian team and I cried foul. Even the commentators who are not Nigerians were unanimous in saying that it was an undeserved penalty. I agree with the question posed by 'finest' in that the source of the news about the sacking of this referee is very important.

deterrent

This will serve as deterrent to other prejudiced referee

Sacked Egptian ref

This will serve as deterant to other referees in the tornament, this 2013 Caf Nation cup has so far witness poor referees, this is a good developement. More elbow to you Caf Discplinary Committee and Officials.
Good judgement.
A huge lesson to learn from this!

Grisha flunked it....

I really do not know what criteria CAF uses in selecting referees, but in the case of Ghead Grisha it is obvious that he was there achieve some sinister motives..... He really doesn't have any business being at the tournament.... His singular act of stupidly will surely be used FIFA in determining the fate of African referees..... You couldn't be so stupid to award a penalty for an offence that was never committed, and even if we assume without conceding that such offence was indeed committed, the best the Zambians should get was a free-kick. You couldn't award a penalty for an offence that took place outside the 18-yard box.... Now i understand why African referees hardly ever make it to the FIFA World Cup...... Nonesense!!
