#Occupy Nigeria protesters at a million-man rally in Lagos last week amking strong speeches, poetry and music.
Mike, educated Nigerians are not protesting deregulation. As you rightly put it further down your comment, it should be implemented in phases with focus on re-introducing locally produced petrol.
If the govt is well-meaning, it will be semantically correct to rephrase 'fuel subsidy' as 'petrol penalty' to appear to carry the fuel subsidy as a burden for the next 1 - 2 years while they (govt) strive to bring about at least 30-50% consumption capacity from refineries within. Subsequent subsidy removal will not jump prices to N140, but rather in the region of N85 - N105 as Nigerians will vigorously pursue 100% capacity; gingered by govt's initiative.
This is similar to what is going on in the oil industry, where oil companies are given deadlines to 'flare-out' (of gas flares), and in the interim they pay penalties until they have fully developed gas gathering plants to compress the produced gas and send to LNG.
Let's be smart and not dictatorial.
She is a demographer, demographist, population scientist (a scientist who studies the growth and density of populations and their vital statistics. Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was educated at Harvard University, graduating magna cum laude with an A.B. in 1977, and earned her Ph.D. in urban and regional planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is no economist.
I wonder what the speaker meant by being a demographer.
Pastor ? Tunde Bakare? Though I reject the fuel subsidy removal in totality, I was taught to pray for my leaders. This fuel protest may be taking a different dimension! Jonathan will do well to reverse the fuel price and then dialogue with well-meaning Nigerians who are interested in issues and not personalities!

If really Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is a true daughter of the land, let her disrobe herself in public to convince the world that she has the bonafide mettle to effect positive changes. NOI, brilliant teen-age girls enough to be your youngest daughter only need pencil/paper to work the simple arithmetic problem that will convince people that a litre of petrol price at N45...N40 is quite possible. If you cannot handle the challenge, you are just a WORLD-BANK-THIEF !
Nigeria is high time we fight for our right dont let us get what we can get in 40days dont let us get it in 40year remember the isrealite in the bible.
@Osita to be honest with you, I pity those sad Igbo sentiments u expressed here against Deri. While we are busy troubling our souls about the Igbos being slaughtered by boko haram in the North daily, one is shocked to have u waste precious space here, which u would have used against BH, on good old Deri? And his love for crude oil-haba malam kura! Your whole idea about yourself is borrowed - borrowed from those who have no idea of who they are themselves. So what you need is our pity-an expression of sympathy over the unfortunate incident that took place in Mandalla, Kaduna and Adamawa. Aware it has greatly affected your mode of thinking-my plea to u is to learn to love GEJ for the next 4yrs-u cannot eat yr cake and have it in the south south again-No way! U cannot gag us again-its over and done with! until u change and learn to love and respect GEJ, its cheers from Deri! Animal Iwu protest!
Petroleum Sector deregulation is in-line with Govt Privatization Policies. So why are educated Nigerians protesting?
Well, govt did not cushion the factorial effects on the common citizen before running to the airwaves.
My people, govt has to remove fuel subsidy to cut costs and to encourage private-sector participation in local fuel refining business.
However, subsidy removal should be implemented in phases over a specified period that would tally with bringing on stream, locally-refined fuel.
Solution: Actively engage the firms that built the 3 or 4 non-functioning refineries to repair them within a period of 3 months as they introduce the subsidy removal in phases.
Anyway, we need to get out of this distraction in order to bring together Nigeria's ethnic groups to address the more important issue of Confederation.
Your utterance shows that you're ignorant of Nigerian complexity and how cruel our so called politicians are. Have u 4gotten the masacre of sallah day by xtians in Jos? It went to the extent of eating the flesh of muslims that were killed and roasted like goats! Have u eva tested a flesh of human being? Then ask Jos christians. For details pls check youtube.
What we Nigerian citizens are protesting against is for the benefit of all Nigerians not a minute part. Pls be awake of your slumber!
Trash. Demographer or economist, the fact is
clear and it is simple: subsidies distort
resource allocation and fuel corruption.
They must be removed. PERIOD.
If you want to protest about something, protest about the massacre of your felow citizens on Christmas Day. Or shut your immoral mouth.
I thought the woman has credibility. How can he lie to us that if fuel subsidy is not removed, Nigeira will fall into borrowing to fund capital projects. Yet we will derive N9.5 trillion from oil proceeds being our share (60%) of 2.4m barrels daily production at.$113 for 365 days and exchange rate of N155. In addition we expect N1 trillion from gas sales, N4 trillion from FIRS including PPT and Royalties and N2.5 trillion from the customs. Total of these is N17 trillion but she lied they Nigeria will receice only N5 trillion. For God's sake where is whopping N12 trillion and why should we borrow with this size of cash inflow. Moreover where are the infrastructure she promised with the debt forgiveness fraud, and where are the developments from the subsidy they removed from diesel. She should resign.
I have since come to the conclusion that Deri is at most a rascal with enough time to spare,he is too far from what one can refer to as a propaganda mecenary,he is incapable of such a fit.The only employer who is ready to pay Deri's sort is a stack illitrate who lacks a basic knowledge of cyber space and its audience.
Deri can post the same lines over and over again because of the blocking factor that sets in due logical puzzles above his realm which he cannot decipher.Deri has become a nuissance and menace that we must cope with.He often shoots himself in the feet,he also likes picking and choosing where to post his rubbish,he never condemns corruption,he hates Ndigbo and loves oil and ND,he is better ignored.
Mr. Jonathan seems not to regard Nigerians at all. He has surrounded his negotiation team with THIEVES, FRAUDSTERS, LOOTERS, ELECTION RIGGERS such as Suswam and Akpabio i.e sheer insincere to Nigerians. Jonathan was happy when Tunde Bakare, Buhari & other politicians demonstrated that Jonathan should be sworn in when Yar Adua was sick. But now Jonathan & his cohorts are calling them hijackers of protest. The Lord by His grace will help us from this heartless corrupt federal and state governments.
Ngozi Wahala was not qualified to become a Minister of Finance twice. She is a demographer as Occupy Nigeria has revealed. Shame! She should resign with shame.
Her Wikipedia information did not mention Finance or Economics. That was how the fat boobed or 'stocket' of the Nigerian Stock Exchange Ndidi Okereke fooled us with a fake PhD. Ndi igbo kwenu!
I love you pastor Tunde Bakare.
An action a government took which it believed is in the intetrest of the masses is being hijacked to diminish people in govt. Many many times did past governments remove subsidy on fuel (though not to the level of today's), yet we did not observe something similar to today's hijack of protests for political purposes. If we continue with the belief that running Nigeria is meant for some few selected sections of Nigeria, then the earlier we pack up the idea of One Nigeria, the better for all of us. Why can't we separate politics from fuel subsidy protests? Leaders from known groups led Nigeria when oil revenues were aplenty but could not renew Nigeria's rail system, cancelled metro projects, could not renew electricity supply system. If they did, few Nigerians may care how much petrol costs today. Today, just because some "outsiders" are included in apex policy formulation, these groups are mixing politics with subsidy protests to ask for a collapse of government and anarchy.
I DO NOT BUY INTO CONSIPACY THEORY NORMALLY. BUT NOW I BELIEVE SOMETHING FISHY IS GOING ON.THERE SEEMS TO BE A FORM OF NEO COLONIALISM GOING ON.it is true oh. she is not economist check wikipedia.
the truth of d whole matter is that there could be sense in what GEJ is talking about fuel subsidy in nigeria. but d fact remains dat he has to obey d voice of d electorate- bein d sovereign power in nigeria. thereafter, he should substantiate his reasons for d removal of fuel subsidy. nigeria is speedly drifting at d moment
I.Cut David Mark and the greedy senator's pay by 60% and an instant downward review of thier senseless allowances.(same for house of rep.)
2.commence an investigation of the subsidy money recipients, since the PDP came to power.
3.An instant public declaration of personal assets for all elected and political appointees.
4.Commence an enquiry into the funds invested in the refurbishment of existing refineries and the funds purportedly invested in the electrical power sector for the past 12 years.
5.Establish special courts for the swift dispensation of justice in corruption cases.
6.A security vote reform(use the money for a mordern police force).THEN ONE CAN TRUST JONATHAN.
I believe that it is high time the bush meat caught the hunter.
Let us pray for Nigeria.
See your life deri nobody wanna take a look at ur comments again not to talk of reading them.. I, myself didnt even waste my time to go through it but know that definitely you will always post nonsense.. #hisses
The is the reason why with all the troubles going on in the Eurozone's economic bloc, it is only the IMF decisions and contributions that really matters and as such it is the only one being mentioned at all times (please check if it is true or not).
We should not likewise forget the case of the former head of the Nigerian Stock Exchange whose fabricated lies about her positions led to milions of middle class Nigerians loosing their hard earned money buying phoney and worthless bank shares during Obasanjo's regime.
Please fellow Nigerians, thank God for the internet and other means of sourcing for information, people should find out more on the differences between IMF and the World Bank when it comes to their core functions in the global economy and international trade (eventhough they are often named together). Thanks.
THE TIME IS NOW!
IBB SAPped us for nine years only to waste it on transitions that had no end. Abacha too on his quest for President-for-life. OBJ also adjusted fuel price nine times only for him to use the proceeds to bribe Politicians with his third term ambitions!......They are at it again. After the monumental fraud called presidential election; they are now broke. They are looking for more to loot and to rig 2015 elections.
I think Bakare is threading a dangerous path.
Selfishness, and personal ambition are beginning to becloud his sensibility, as well as distort his rational assessment of pertinent national issues. Even Jesus scolded the sons of Zebedee when they asked for fire to come down and consume people they perceived as enemies; Jesus rebuked them. Luke 9:54-55.
How could Bakare call his President names, and wish for his death. This is callous, and unbecoming of a supposed 'Preacher of good news'.
This is all about his defeat at the last election.
I have suffered the consequences of corruption, and bad leadership, and fervently pray for a better Nigeria.
If he loved Nigerians this much, what did he do about the wanton killings, and destruction of properties in the North? He simply defended his CPC paymaster- Buhari.)
I hope that Govt. and Labour resolve this whole issue, and ensure that only policies that guarantee our collective future are settled for.
The headline alone was enough to catch my attention. I already know all along that there is something fishy about Mrs Ngozi Okonjo - Iweala's position has I have tried several times to:
1) Locate exactly what are skills were and what were those activities and duties expected of her position within the so-called World Bank in which she has been alleged to take prominent position.
2) To locate if both World Bank and IMF are true one and the same.
The truth that I found out is that when it comes to the international level of finance movement, then that is when they only tend to link them together as one, but when it actually comes to techincalities and macro-economic decisions with real time effects on the economy of nations, it is only the IMF that decides and have the say in all matters involved.
