Mike Adenuga arrested, detained by EFCC

July 9, 2006

Nigeria's so-called richest man, Mike Adenuga was detained by the EFCC a few hours ago. It is not clear why Mike Adenuga was being detained by the EFCC after he honored an invitation to speak with investigators at the EFCC. He runs the largest telecommunication corporation in Nigeria, known as Globalcom operators of  “Glo- Mobile”, he  also owns Equatorial Trust Bank (ETB), Con oil producing, World Span and Southern Airlines

In the past, Mike Adenuga was rumored to be a front for former President Ibrahim Babangida as he looted Nigeria's treasury during his 8-year rule as a military president, there are no clear indication that Mike Adenuga’s current travail is linked to the corruption of the Babangida regime.

Since the inception of the current civilian regime,  Mike Adenuga has been warm and cozy with President Obasanjo, in 2005 he made the single largest donation to his Presidential Library Project, he alone donated 250 million naira (N250 million) to the controversial project.

Saharareporters made several efforts to reach the EFCC without success. It is believed that the pressure on EFCC is so much that all the officials of EFCC have virtually gone incommunicado. Otunba Mike Adenuga is a cousin to another close friend of President Obasanjo, the Awujale of Ijebu-Ode who we learnt is leading a powerful lobby to get Mike out of EFCC’s detention in Abuja.
