As predicted over the exuberant attitude of Mr. Ayodele Peter Fayose, the embattled governor of Ekiti State, “dangerous objects in his mirror are approaching faster and closer than they appear”. If events today in Ado Ekiti are anything to go by, “the governor may as well kiss the state house good bye” echoed a protester in Ado Ekiti.
Today, the combined efforts of opposition groups in Ekiti State yielded a massive rally against Governor Ayodele Fayose in Ekiti State. The rally which commenced mobilization early in the day was massive and well attended by Ekiti indigenes all over the state. To underscore the level of discontent, so many of the attendees were members of the PDP, the governor’s party. This rally came on the heels of the Independence Day speech of the Fayose where he boasted that nobody can remove him from power and also accused the rebelling house of assembly members of wanting to take power from him.
As if the mass rally in Ado-Ekiti wasn’t bad enough for Fayose the denial of a crucial meeting with President Obasanjo by his colleagues in the PDP led by four governors of the Southwest was a big set back. President Obasanjo, still smarting from huge credibility problems of his own due to recent disclosures of corruption of his aides, families and companies was said to have asked the governors to stay away from him refusing to discuss the “Fayose issue” for now according to our sources. The meeting with President Obasanjo was foreclosed with the absence of Chief Olabode George who was sent to an assignment akin to a wild goose chase to Saudi Arabia by the presidency; his last minute inclusion on the Saudi Arabia delegation was as a result of his nuisance value in helping to defeat the impeachment of Fayose. But most prominently, the president was said to be vehemently opposed to saving Fayose because he was in the thick of another plot to remove Plateau State governor, Mr.Joshua Dariye. “The president cannot save Fayose when he would also be removing Dariye about the same time Fayose is supposed to be gone”, said our source in Aso Rock.
Meanwhile, a little drama played out in Ekiti State today when the clerk of the house, Pastor Ojo Fashiku snuck into the state house of assembly to steal the house mace as directed by Governor Fayose, he was promptly arrested by the police and detained at the state police headquarters. From sources at the police headquarters in Abuja, Saharareporters learnt that the movement of Governor Ayo Fayose might have been restricted in Ado Ekiti, this was a response to public threats he made against members of the state house of assembly. He was also accused of attempting to kidnap the chief justice of the state so as to prevent him from carrying out his duty as required by the constitution in the impeachment process.
Earlier today, Saharareporters spoke with the speaker of the Ekiti State house of Assembly and the leader of 24 legislators who served an impeachment notice on Fayose last Friday. The speaker, Mr. Friday Aderemi said he would like to assure all indigenes of Ekiti State that the group is in high spirit and would never succumb to intimidation. Asked when he intends to move his group back into Ekiti State, he revealed that they are very much within the ‘vicinity’ of Ado-Ekiti waiting to get a response from Governor Fayose on the impeachable offences proffered against him and his deputy, Mrs. Biodun Olujimi.
He announced that the next sitting of the house will depend on him (Fayose) and when he decides to respond to the allegations which he is well aware should not take too long. As per his expectation of the length of the governor’s trial and wrap-up of investigative activities, he answered that it will take nothing more than 3-days after the chief judge of the state might have constituted a panel. Promising that Governor Fayose will be given fair hearing, the speaker restated that if he’s found guilty, his government will become history in less than 72 hours!
