IG releases The News Editor, Femi Ojudu

November 9, 2006
The police authorities in Abuja, Nigeria released TheNEWS managing editor, Mr. Femi Ojudu on bail today in Abuja after his detention at the request of the IG at the force headquarters since Tuesday.

Saharareporters spoke to Mr. Ojudu shortly after his release from detention. He maintains that the IG was only using his power to violate his right to liberty over his stance on issues relating to the corruption and politically motivated killings in his homestate, Ekiti. He is currently on his way to Lagos. The IG of police had been under intense scrutiny from the media in Nigeria over increased insecurity of lives and properties as well as involvement in extra-legal political engagements.

In particular, the recent violation of an appeal court ruling which reinstated the governor of Oyo State,  Chief Rasheed Ladoja. The IG and the Attorney General of the federation have conveniently avoided implementing the judgment claiming that it is "unenforcable".

The IG earlier claimed that Mr. Ojudu's arrest was remotely connected with the murder of Ayo daramola, the assasinated PDP gubernatorial aspirant in Ekiti State, but public outcry by lawyer activist and WBA president, Femi Falana that this was an attempt to bungle the murder investigations might have led the IGP to change his course.

Mr. Femi Ojudu is required to report back to the force headquarters next week Tuesday.
