Alao Akala's Book Contract Scandal: Two Nigeria publishers agrees to refund N780 million to the Oyo State government.

March 26, 2007
The book contract scandal in Oyo State may be resolved in favor of the state as the two book publishing companies involved in the scam-MacMillan Nigeria Publisher Limited and Evans Brothers Nigeria Publishers Limited- have both agreed to refund N780 million to the Oyo State government being cost of over-inflation of books ordered for secondary schools in the state under the illegitimate regime of Chief Christopher Alao Akala.

The deputy governor, Chief Akala who had a brief stint as "governor" of Oyo State under controversial circumstances, was involved in scams which attracted petitions by civil servants and citizens in the state to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), after investigations and confessions by affected parties in the book scam the EFCC established that Chief Alao Akala had actually inflated the contracts and received kick-backs from the book publishers. However, strong ties with President Obasanjo and acclaimed strong man of Ibadan politics, Chief Lamidi Adedibu did not allow the EFCC to clamp down on Alao Akala as was expected in a clear case of corruption of this type.

Chief Alao Akala is President Obasanjo's anointed candidate of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial ticket in Oyo State. He is a controversial candidate who despite public opprobrium by EFCC chairman, Nuhu Ribadu, made it through the EFCC advisory as a "clean" candidate even though he was investigated for various corrupt practices and found to be culpable by the EFCC.

The publishing companies have already deposited N12 million and N10 million respectively pleading with the EFCC for more time to make all the refunds necessary.
