Book Scam: Alao Akala replies Saharareporters-OUR STORY STANDS

March 26, 2007

Message:     TISSUES OF LIES AGAINST AKALA STILL CONTINUES

The story making the rounds on the internet that some publishers in Oyo State have refunded "inflated" balance of the customized text books in Oyo State during the Alao-Akala Administration is totally false, unfounded and mischievous.

Nothing like that ever happened or transpired. The last time ICPC ever got in touch with the publishers was over a month ago when their statements were taken.  The publishers were consistent in their defense of the empirical mode of business transaction between government and multi-nationals, which was found to be legitimate.

It was based upon this submission that the publishers were released over a month ago.

The Sahara website( www.saharareporters.com) that networked this false information is merely working for those who are footing its bills and it should be recognized as such.  They still cannot believe that the game is up.

The story as usual was planted again!
We maintain that the eleven month Administration of Otunba Alao-Akala in Oyo State remains unblemished and no amount of disinformation or blackmail can disturb his certain electoral victory next month.

OUR ORIGINAL STORY:

The book contract scandal in Oyo State may be resolved in favor of the state as the two book publishing companies involved in the scam-MacMillan Nigeria Publisher Limited and Evans Brothers Nigeria Publishers Limited- have both agreed to refund N780 million to the Oyo State government being cost of over-inflation of books ordered for secondary schools in the state under the illegitimate regime of Chief Christopher Alao Akala.

The deputy governor, Chief Akala who had a brief stint as "governor" of Oyo State under controversial circumstances, was involved in scams which attracted petitions by civil servants and citizens in the state to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), after investigations and confessions by affected parties in the book scam the EFCC established that Chief Alao Akala had actually inflated the contracts and received kick-backs from the book publishers. However, strong ties with President Obasanjo and acclaimed strong man of Ibadan politics, Chief Lamidi Adedibu did not allow the EFCC to clamp down on Alao Akala as was expected in a clear case of corruption of this type.

Chief Alao Akala is President Obasanjo's anointed candidate of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial ticket in Oyo State. He is a controversial candidate who despite public opprobrium by EFCC chairman, Nuhu Ribadu, made it through the EFCC advisory as a "clean" candidate even though he was investigated for various corrupt practices and found to be culpable by the EFCC.

The publishing companies have already deposited N12 million and N10 million respectively pleading with the EFCC for more time to make all the refunds necessary.

We stand firmly by our initial story. We can confirm that Macmillan Nigeria Publishers issued an ECO Bank cheque of N10 million on February 20 2007 as part payment towards the refund of the over-inflated book contracts through the EFCC and Evan Brothers Nigeria Limited also issued N12 million bank draft through Sterlings Bank on February 27th 2007 to the Oyo State government. We have no information about the investigations carried out by the ICPC our story relates to the EFCC investigations.

The public must also be informed that just yesterday Chief Alao Akala was  indicted by an Administrative Panel set up by the Oyo State government to investigate him for corruption and he was barred from holding public office for life.
