DEPLETING THE TREASURY IN OYO STATE

February 13, 2008
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been busy determining how innocent or otherwise the deputy governor of Oyo State, Chief Adebayo Alao Akala, is over allegations of misappropriation of public funds when he was governor of the state between January and November 2006. Last week, the agency had its hands full arresting both former and serving political office holders, as well as some relevant private sector officials it believes would assist in straightening out the allegations. Top of the allegation is that the Alao-Akala administration inflated purchase of fire-fighting equipment worth about N85 million. On 12 May 2006, the erstwhile governor had led a team to the Shandong Linyl Fire Fighting Equipment Factory in China for first-hand inspection of some fire-fighting equipment that had been identified as desirable for the fire fighting needs of the state. During the visit, an agreement was signed between China Henan International Co-operation Group, CHICO, which owns the Shandong factory, and the Oyo State Government.
