UPDATED:APPEAL COURT NULLIFIES SOKOTO GUBER ELECTION

April 10, 2008
The appeal court sitting in Kaduna on Friday nullified the election of Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wammako. The election of Magatakarda was challenged at the Appeal court by Muhammadu Maigari, the Candidate of the DPP, after the election Tribunal sitting in Sokoto affirmed his election.

The election appeal tribunal sitting in Kaduna led by Justice Zainab Bukatchuwa in her ruling affirmed  that Wammako, was not qualified to run in the  April 14 2007 election, since he was a member of the ANPP and had not been duly registered as a PDP member.

The judge, however, ordered the Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly to take over pending when INEC would conduct a fresh election in the state.

Another decision by the lead justice that the  election shall be between the candidates that contested the 14 April, 2007 governorship election was condemned by legal analysts who maintain that since Wammako was not qualified as at the time of the election in April 2007, he should stand disqualified.

...Else where, the Court of Appeal ruled that the election of Yar'adua's son-in-law, Saidu Usman Dakingari as the governor of Kebbi State is upheld. His election was earlier annulled by an election petition tribunal sitting in Birnin Kebbi.
