Theresa Nkoyo Ibori Re-Arrested in London, To Be Fully Arraigned Tomorrow

May 18, 2008
The London Metropolitan Police has re-arrested former Delta State First Lady, Theresa Nkoyo Nakanda Ibori, on charges of money laundering. She was first arrested in November 2007 and granted bail.

Mrs. Ibori was charged to court today in London and denied bail. The Crown Prosecution Service determined there was a case against her and she is being detained to prevent her from fleeing to Nigeria. London Metropolitan Police sources said she would be in custody overnight as they prepare for her full arraignment before a Westminster Magistrate’s Court tomorrow  (May 20 2008). The court will decide whether or not to grant her bail at the hearing scheduled for early morning in London.

Theresa Nkoyo Ibori is married to former Delta State Governor James Ibori, the main target of an extensive money laundering investigation by British law enforcement agents. He is also facing corruption and bribery charges in Nigeria before a Federal High Court judge in Kaduna.

One source told Saharareporters “Theresa and James Ibori lived a life of crime together before getting married.” According to UK court documents obtained by Saharareporters, UK courts twice convicted James Ibori for stealing and dishonest acts in 1991 and 1992.

In his first trial, his then girlfriend (now wife), Theresa Nakanda, was convicted along with Mr. Ibori on January 25, 1991 at the Isleworth Crown Court in London.

In that trial, Theresa Ibori, who gave her date of birth as January 5th 1968, was convicted on two counts and fined £300 and £450. James Ibori, who, according to court documents, gave his date of birth as August 4th 1962, was also fined in the same amounts. At the time of his conviction, Ibori lived in the Middlesex area of London.
