Nigerian Civil Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana Wins Prestigious IBA Bernard Simons Memorial Award 2008
Nigerian human rights activist and foremost lawyer, Femi Falana has been awarded the International Bar Association's Bernard Simons Memorial Award 2008.
Falana, former president of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) and currently president of the West Africa Bar Association (WBA), was selected to receive the prestigious award for his contribution to the promotion, protection and advancement of human rights in Nigeria.
In June 1995 the IBA introduced the Bernard Simons Memorial Award, a prize awarded to honor the memory, endeavors and achievements of the late London solicitor, Bernard Simons.
The award recognizes personal endeavors in the practice of criminal law which make a substantial contribution to the promotion, protection and advancement of human rights.
Falana is the second Nigerian lawyer to win the award after it was granted to Gani Fawehinmi, SAN in 1998.
The award will be presented to him at this year's International Bar Association conference taking place between 12-17 October 2008 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
