Adams Oshiomole Becomes Governor of Edo State.

December 30, 2008
The Court of Appeals sitting in Benin, Edo State, today declared the candidate of the Action Congress (AC), Adams Oshiomole, as the rightful winner of the April 2007 gubernatorial election in the state, thus affirming the judgment of the lower tribunal in the matter.

The ruling was read by the President of the Court of Appeal, Umaru Abdullahi, who has an unsavory reputation for questionable electoral tribunal rulings across Nigeria that have become a lightening rod for critics. Today's victory for Oshiomole is widely perceived as a judgment aimed at placating the opposition.  Some analysts say it also reflects a strong desire by the appellant court president to begin his retirement plans with a somewhat redemptive legacy.
Contacted in Benin award-winning human rights lawyer, Barrister Femi Falana, characterized the mood in the city of Benin City following the ruling as an "Obama moment."

Wild scenes of jubilation have featured in the city throughout the day.
