ICPC Cover up: Federal MP's Certificate Scandal Covered up by ICPC and Nigerian Press

January 5, 2009
I am a concerned Nigerian. My name is Halima Mustapha from Jigawa state. There is a story unfolding in the state which the ICPC is trying to surpress. As a concerned citizen who is an insider in the dealings, I have tried to draw attention to the shameful act without success. It seems there is an agreement in the Nigerian media not to touch the matter. It has to do with a certificate scandal involving the Member representing Garki/Babura federal constituency in the national assembly. You can verify my story from independent sources.

This is the story: In April 2007, Yushau Kanya of PDP was declared winner of the postponed elections in Garki/Babura federal constituency by INEC. According to INEC, he defeated the incumbent ANPP candidate Nasiru Garba Dantiye who was no doubt more popular.

Because of the daring robbery carried out by the PDP, the ANPP candidate went to court. But his petition was denied by the election tribunal sitting in Dutse and the appeal affirmed the decision in Kaduna later. But knowing that the supposedly elected MP forged the WAEC certificates he used to gain admission into Federal College of Education for his Diploma Certificate, the ANPP candidate petitioned the Nigeria Police. When the petition was blocked by PDP chieftains, including the Governor of Jigawa state, Alhaji Sule Lamido, he decided to petition the ICPC in July, 2008.

Among other things, he attached copies of the WAEC certificates showing that the honourable MP passed exams that he did not sit for. Instead, he attached evidence from WAEC which shows that the exams were written by his junior brother who is Head of Micro-Biology Dept in Bayero University, Kano (BUK).

The ICPC invited the MP for interrogation. But that was where the matter died. Powerful forces, including Lamido and members of the national assembly from Jigawa intervened and the commission developed cold feet.

Now, an MP who forged certificates is among the 380 honourable men in the House of Representatives and nobody has the powers to challenge him; not even Yar'Adua's rule of law. Unlike the notorious Buhari Toronto case, this MP is robbing his crime in our faces.

I am sending you details (copies of documents are attached for verification) because people say you are fearless and would expose corrupt people even if the Nigerian press seems compromised. I hope you would see value in it and use it as a news story with great prominence so that people like Kanya would know that we still have a last resort even if they buy everybody else over.
