Igbo descend on Owerri to hear Chinua Achebe Speak

 Igbo, from all walks of life are now gathering in Owerri, Imo State capital for tomorrow’s Ahiajoku Lecture to be delivered by renowned author of the famous “Things Fall Apart”, Prof. Chinua Achebe. Prof Achebe, who arrived Nigeria from the United States to deliver the famous lecture is expected in Owerri later today.

Most of the hotels in Owerri have been fully booked and airlines that ply the Owerri route are recording increased patronage as Igbo and non-Igbo alike troop to hear the big literary masquerade who has been staying in the United States since a fatal car crash left him on wheel chairs in 1990. Politicians, businessmen, captains of industry, the academia and big corporate players are already in town preparatory for the lecture.

Towards the lecture itself, there has been an elaborate preparation to welcome this world famous writer and ensure a hitch free lecture. Presently an International Conference Igbo Civilization and the Golden Jubilee celebration of Things Fall Apart is going on at Concorde Hotel Owerri.  So far, so many erudite scholars including Prof. Chinweizu, Prof. MJC Echeruo, Prof. Anezi Okoro, Prof. Ama Nduka, Prof. A.U.Ogan, Prof. Alex Animalu, Prof. D. Opata, Rev. Fr. Prof. Charles Ohaeri, Prof. A. B. Okorie, Prof. Bath Nnnaji, Prof. Ernest Emenyonu, Prof. Richard Okafor, Dr. Uma Eleazu, Dr. Nwankwor Ezeigwe, Dr. Chidi Osuagwu, Prof. T.U. Nwala, Prof Cahterine Acholonu, Rev. Fr. Barr Ikenga Oraegbunam, ProfVenerable  Uzoho, Prof. Chiweyite Ejike, Rev. Sr. Caroline Mbonu, Prof. Chudi Uwazuruike and so many others have delivered papers on diverse topic relating to \Igbo civilization. The conference rounds off today.

 This is Prof Achebe’s second visit to Nigeria since he went to the United States for treatment after the accident. The first was when he came to deliver the maiden Odenigbo Lecture organized by the Whelan Research Institute. The Ahiajoku Lecture is a yearly lecture series that focuses on issues that affect Igbo in the contemporary world. It is organized by the Imo State Government.
