That Show of Power By Akwa Ibom Speaker

February 14, 2009
Reading the Fresh Facts of January 12 – January 18, 2009 on its page 12 of how the Akwa Ibom Assembly Speaker, Obong Ignatius Edet, tore Ibiono Ibom Union apart, I continue imagining and adding to how mediocrity is the order of the day as our political class today is concerned. It is said that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. We witness them these days.

Where a man of the caliber of the Speaker could degenerate to a localized Union to enforce his powers to the extent that gathering of the sons of the Ibiono Ibom Union which had traditional rulers and a commissioner in the State were tear-gassed shows the extend temporary, absolute power could corrupt absolutely. What would he be thinking by the time he gets down from that “exalted” seat of Speakership?

This is a man that his colleagues signed impeachment paper that would have disgraced him out of office for corrupt practices but for the intervention of the State governor. One need not talk much about the crop of politicians we have in Akwa Ibom State in the present dispensation; it is better left for another day, but nowadays, the majority is observing and discussing in hush tones.
