Rilwan Lukman: Serving Two Masters

February 15, 2009
Sir,
December 18, 2008 Alhaji Rilwanu Lukman, now a four-timer head of Petroleum Ministry was on oath and pledged that he will not allow “personal interest to influence my official conduct or my official decisions”.

But with the latest revelation in the media that he has his hands full in oil and gas companies, one wonders how he would live up to the pledge or oath he had taken.

As revealed by FRESH FACTS newspaper of February 02-08, 2009, he was alleged to be involved in the following companies that derive their profits from gas and oil activities – African Heritage Oil and Gas Limited, Africa Heritage Investment Limited, Africa Heritage Industrial Limited and Africa Heritage Logistics Limited – all believed to have been registered in London between 2005 and 2006 after his appointment as Special Adviser to Obj on Petroleum Matters. He is allegedly also linked with AFREN, a company that is in oil exploration and drilling in Nigeria.

On LNG activities, he is allegedly linked to Afgas, African LNG Holdings, Gasol and African Gas Development Corporation. Apart from these, he is said to have stakes in Taofiq Securities Limited and R. Lukman & Company Limited.

It is alleged that he influenced the appointment of his former Personal Assistant, Alhaji Mohamed Sanusi Barkindo as the new Group Managing Director of NNPC even on the fact that Mohamed has no engineering background.

Can the Minister of Petroleum controvert the above revelations? If not, it is now evident that he is serving two matters at the same time and our President that appointed him should by now try to reverse the appointments in order to restore our confidence in his policies.  In America, nominees to Cabinet ranks resigned on little matters like tax problems.
