What manner of anti-graft agency do we have

April 4, 2009

Editor: For instance, tell me what the EFCC’s Mrs. Waziri is still doing there when she could not till now substantiate certain hanging alarms that she created in the first instance. Furthermore, why should she not clear the air on some other matters that seem to portray her wrongly in the eyes of the public?

Some of these are: Her failure to name that first-term governor who she said bought a property worth N1billion in Abuja few months after assuming office. Why should she not name those present governors who she said are drug pushers? Why must she not clear herself of the alleged jeep gift from a governor: the media had graphically narrated how the shameful act was committed? Another serious case was the one that a governor’s brother, again from the south-south, went to an embassy for Visa, where he presented a bank statement with a lodgment of N1billion in his personal bank account. The embassy, thinking that it was trying to help the anti-graft agency, called it in but the way and manner the matter has been handled till date is anti-progressive. It was reported that the EFCC had to consider the high network connection of the Governor with the top hierarchy of the anti-graft agency to let the matter be in the cooler.  Even her refusal to name those Nigerians already quizzed on the Halliburton bribery scandal is a serious misdeed on the part of the EFCC boss.

Matters, such as the above would continue to hunt the EFCC leadership, if allowed to be as it were.

The Press must not been seen to be covering up such corrupt actions by ignoring to go deep into them. It would be a disservice to the masses who believe in Nigeria media. If we must progress as a near corrupt-free nation, such matters must be handled conclusively. The Press is the last hope of the nation and the masses.
