Bankole and the Ekiti Shame

April 5, 2009

Even though I do not belong to any political party, I was nevertheless excited when Dimeji Bankole emerged speaker of the House of Representatives. As a man of my age, I saw the generational shift as a plus for our democracy and that things were changing for the better.

Lately, his conduct demonstrated by his descent into the perfidious terrain of gross partisanship when statesmanship was otherwise required has had the effect of making me question if this country can really ever work.

I mean, we have always accused the older generation of ruining our country and been clamouring for a generational change. Now we have it and we are messing it up.

That the Speaker of the House of Representatives can gleefully sing of the determination of the ruling party, PDP, to use the military if possible to ensure they win a rerun election beggars belief. To even have the temerity to deny what he said (which was rightly reported by various media outlets) is, to say the least, cowardly and unscrupulous of him.

That Yar'Adua and Oyinlola talked along the same line shows that for Nigeria to succeed, PDP must fail and that is becoming clearer to every dispassionate observer. No wonder the Yar'Adua government did away with by far the most critical issues in the Justice Uwais' Panels' recommendations. It is indeed clear that Yar'Adua is not sincere with Nigerians and that those who were expecting him to provide a level ground for all parties in the political firmament are only hoping against hope.

The question then is: why has Yar'Adua's government tried to portray Obasanjo as the 'dirty' one who made all of them appear dirty? Whatever Obsanjo did with his 'do-or-die' politics, Yar'Adua is already doing better with his 'chameleonic win at all cost'.

I weep for Nigeria and I am ashamed of all these irresponsible leaders. I pray that the God who demonstrated his sovereignty in Abacha's case would visit our nation again and met out the 'Abacha treatment' to all the politically, morally and financially corrupt people in the government of Nigeria.

As for us the long-suffering masses, may HE continue to show mercy unto us.
