Re-Nigeria at the Mercy of Sahara Reporters

April 21, 2009

Visiting the Saharareporters website to a Nigerian in the diaspora like me, is a daily ritual if I really need to be updated about things happening back at home. But today I got a rude shock of my life when I stumbled on an article captioned "Nigeria at the Mercy of Sahara Reporters" purportedly written by one Mr. Joshua Ocheja. Actually I must confess the author of the said article is a creative writer but his creativity is very deceptive and has the potential of inciting misinformed Nigerians against the hard working sahareporters' team.

I chose to use the word "deceptive" because at the beginning of the article one would believe Mr. Joshua Ocheja is a genuine believer in what sahareporters is doing in fighting against bad governance in Nigeria. But alas..the final submission of the writer shows otherwise. He wonders why sahareporters is always saying bad things about Nigerian leaders and public officers and through his search he has not found a single article that says something good about our government. I strongly think we (believers in the good works of saharareporters' team) need not join Mr. Joshua in looking for what does not exist. As a follower of every single news published on sahareporters website, I have come to realize that sahareporters.com don't believe in "make believe" reporting like other corrupt officials praise singer media houses/journalists (not all of them) that adore the nooks and cronies of the media industry in Nigeria. Simply put..at saharareporters, truth is sacred. After dissecting Mr. Joshua Ochera's article I found that he just wanted the sahrareportes to call black , white or say good is bad so that the other Nations of the world can respect Nigeria.

I put it to you Mr. a house built by falsehood for hundreds of years will be pulled down by the wind of truth in just a second. In fairness I don't think sahareporters team just like to say something bad about the Nigerian government. They can't just try to report something good when there no evidence to back it up. Let every Nigerian look around and point to something good as far as governance in Nigeria is concerned..I bet one would hardly find one or two good things to mention about our leaders. No good roads yet they kept allocating money for road construction and maintenance every year; no constant and dependable electricity yet NEPA sorry PHCN officials go about embarrassing Nigerians for electricity bills. All we have is just a change of name without efficiency; No good hospitals but rather we have glorified clinics without the basic health facilities. Proof me wrong if you can tell me why Turaki is being flown to Germany after he had accident on the Nigerian road.

Why not stay in Nigeria?; Education sector has gradually and finally found it's way into the hands of the private school owners who mostly are the past leaders who stole our monies while in office. for example, Olusegun Obasanjo and Atiku Abubakar.; No purified water but rather Nigerians are made to part with their hard earned money to buy packaged cholera or water disease in the name of "pure water". Mr Joshua the list is endless and we can not continue to pretend all is well like our pastors would make us believe when actually things have fallen apart and may get beyond redemption if care is not taken. The cost of living is high yet the standard of living is very very low. About forty million Nigerians are illiterate and millions are homeless yet we have a lot of uncompleted government buildings every where right from the days of Alhaji Sheu Shagari. We lack continuity and maintenance of public facilities is never part of our culture.

Our leaders are visionless and have not interested in the masses but in their pockets. Politics has become a very viable tool in milking our treasury to the extent that so-called leaders are even willing to trade their daughters to get a member into their party. Instead of massive job creation and development, they'll rather spend our monies in marrying the fort wife cross carpeting from their political party to their father-in-law's. Anti-corruption agnecies are now pro-corruption agencies..The list is indeed endless and the more I write the more i feel some pains in my heart because of the gap between where we are and where we are suppose to be as a Nation. Finally, I want to say anybody under estimating the efficient, effective and productive investigative journalism as exemplified by saharareportes' team, such a person does not love Nigeria. We should all join hands together to fight corruption to a stand still...and call a spade a spade. They say:- Nigeria Good people……. Great Nation…….. We say:- Nigeria Good people……. Bad Leaders……..
