Deadlock in Ekiti: Protest against INEC continues

April 26, 2009

Image removed. The deadlock over the election re-runs in Ekiti continued today with mass public protests in Ekiti.  The protesters are asking the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the election results favorable to Action Congress candidate, Kayode Fayemi.

But Nigeria’s controversial electoral umpire, Maurice Iwu, added another controversial dimension to the crisis by claiming that the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Ayoka Adebayo, is sick and therefore unable to announce the result, since she is the only person constitutionally empowered to do so. However, members of Mrs. Adebayo’s family told Saharareporters that Iwu was lying, asking that if she was sick as he claimed, we should ask Mr. Iwu to tell us in what hospital she is currently receiving treatment.

They further told our reporters that Mrs Adebayo had been summoned to Abuja to give the election results but that she declined to declare a “doctored” result that was already prepared by Maurice Iwu and powerful members of the PDP at the Nigerian presidency.
