Their excellencies go Globe-trotting on money wasting jamboree

May 23, 2009

Dear Editor: One is definitely at a loss reading what was reported in the media early this week of a proposed jamboree by some Nigeria State Governors. Those embarking on the journey with tax-payers’ funds include Governors Olusola Saraki, Godswill Akpabio, Adams Oshiomhole and Isa Yuguda (Yar’Adua’s latest son–in-law).  By now they are in United States America, according to the news report, to understudy some of their counterparts in that country on how they carry on with their duties.

Any right thinking Nigeria would question the rationale behind this money-wasting trip. The ‘surprise’ participant in this; is the Edo State governor Oshiomhole who everybody thought has good antecedents and expected him to have shunned such proposal.

As for Saraki, he is on his last leg stay in the Kwara government house, while Yuguda is alleged to have been involved in abuse of due processes in almost everything he does as a governor; he has gotten additional immunity by marrying the President’s daughter who sources say, has dethroned the older wife as Bauchi first lady.

Akpabio while trying to justify why he introduced capital punishment for kidnappers in Akwa Ibom, had in his interview with The Nation and This Day newspapers, said that he cannot accept the fact that the western world had abolished capital punishment, therefore Nigeria should do same. He concluded by saying that the present Nigeria should be equated to USA of the 16th and not of the 21st century. I think he insulted Nigeria with that comparison. On then wonders if holds this view, what then would he achieve learning in this trip from any USA’s seating Governor?

These ‘Excellencies’ are definitely not performing in the interest of the masses but for personal aggrandizement and selfish interests. I wonder why our leaders do not learn from experience; that no matter how much they illegally acquire; nemesis will never allow them peace of mind.
