AP: Lawyer challenging reported Pfizer settlement says victims only get $175,000 each while Nigerian gov't officials may be smiling all the way to the bank

Image removed.HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Drugmaker Pfizer Inc. is facing opposition as it tries to settle claims that its 1996 meningitis drug study in Nigeria led to 11 children's deaths and left others severely injured.

Connecticut attorney Richard Altschuler has filed legal documents now before a New Haven federal judge trying to stop a reported $75 million settlement between Nigerian government officials and Pfizer.

Altschuler is representing 58 of about 110 victims suing Pfizer in Connecticut and New York. He says the proposed settlement would send millions of dollars to Nigerian officials and lawyers, while giving the victims only $175,000 apiece and scuttling the U.S. lawsuits.

Pfizer says the deaths and injuries were caused by meningitis and not the company's Trovan antibiotic.
