How State governors cheat the masses

June 9, 2009

Sir: I was in love with the letter to the Editor entitled ”Their Excellencies Go Globe-trotting Again” written by one Dr. Jerome Jiga, wherein he named those involved as – Saraki (Kwara), Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Oshiomhole (Edo) and Yuguda (Bauchi), which I read in both print and online media. Also I like the Editorial Opinion of The Nation (4/6/09) and that of Sunday Punch (7/6/09) on the same issue, condemning the recent MoU which Gov Saraki claimed was signed with the Harvard University soon arranging educational programmes for members of Governors Forum of Nigeria.

The MoU as revealed by Saraki’s media assistant would enable Harvard handle the governors in batches and would teach them how best to govern the people. That sounded very ridiculous and funny. One then ask to know why tax-payers money should be used to further sponsor education pursuits of the governors that suppose to give scholarships to indigenes? Again, what relevance would their attending Harvard lectures have with good governance? Did the American governors go through the same programme with the Harvard or any of the other Universities?

The masses should protest this venture in their respective States. It has nothing to do with good governance. The governors should be stopped from deceiving the governed who they have defrauded in many unwise ways. It is the right of the citizens to know how their money is being spent.
