Hon. Sadatu and Free Speech

June 13, 2009

Dear Sir: It was with disappointment that I read about the recent events involving a lawmaker, Hon. Saudatu Sani and a Priest at a recent event held by ENHANSE in Abuja where she attempted to silence free speech when she was reported to have censured a Priest from making his frank observations about Nigeria. The lawmaker must be told that Nigeria is now under a democratically elected Government and she had no right to deny the Reverend his constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech.

Although an elected representative who should be at the vanguard of defending democracy and  improving the lot of Nigerians, she has instead shown herself to be intolerable of any dissent. Her actions clearly speak about the narrow-mindedness of some our leaders who will never brook any constructive criticism and always see Government as incapable of doing any wrong. Such are not the kind of leaders Nigeria needs at this time. Nigeria needs fearless and courageous leaders that are never afraid to say things as they are, like the Reverend in question. I believe that the Hon. Saudatu would do well to apologise for this major blunder and learn to imbibe the culture of tolerance for the views of others which I would assume is the hallmark of democracy.

Yours faithfully,
