RE: Open Letter to FIFA: Why Nigeria Must not Host the U-17 World Cup Tournament in 2009.

June 17, 2009

I have read with dismay a letter on your website written by one Mashood, addressed to FIFA. I am not much worried about the content of the letter because it is in itself a sham, just as its writer (I will pass appropriate comments on its deficiencies later in this piece). I am rather disappointed by the intention of Sahara reporters to publish such trash. It seems Sahara reporter has become a site where anything goes, the same attitude it blames the Nigeria government for. I am one of those who go to your site regularly to get updated with events, especially as concerning corruption in Nigeria, but I have noticed in recent time that most of the articles published on your sites, especially in the letter section, are junks. For this, I have begun to doubt seriously the quality of people at Sahara reporters and their intentions. While I laud your effort in trying to bring the shady deals in government places back at home, some of your titles sometimes seek to divide the country.

It appears that Sahara reporters is looking for cheap popularity, so it publishes anything that even should not have worth being in a paper basket. You can not attain popularity via feeding the public with write-up like the one in reference.  Such kind of write up that only makes people hiss, will only relegates you. I think for any article to appear on the platform of any news outfit, it must have received editorial approval.  Thus, an editorial team is an essential part of any news outfit. I am sure Sahara reporters does not have one, going by the quality of text it publishes most of the time on its site.

The disjointed content of the write up in reference betrays the ugly intention of the writer which he tried unsuccessfully to cover. By his name-Mashhod-he wanted to deceive people into believing he is of the Muslim faith. But his incoherent write up shows that he is one of those impostors who confuse themselves more than they try to deceive others.  His attempt to demonize Islam and present the North as the most dangerous of all regions of the country is clearly visible. While he over-stretched the things he said were happening in the north-even though this are open lies, and I stand to defend my position- he only made a feeble list of all the bad things he claimed are with other parts of the country. He was only being clever by half for not openly telling FIFA that the other sections of the country were safe to host the country except the North.

A true fight for the betterment of Nigeria-although it is obvious he is not fighting for Nigeria betterment-should be on the altar of sincerity, without any form of prejudice. Where the mindset of somebody who wants to portray himself as a human right activist is already tilted against a section, his sincerity is bound to be questioned. I am one of those who staunchly oppose Nigeria hosting the junior World cup because, for sure, it is another avenue for the criminals in government to siphon public funds. Like all other global events we hosted in the past, if this one gets through there will be no accountability for it as usual. It is good reason therefore for anybody to go against it, but not on the foundation of lies and matters that are not related.

Take this as an honest advice and have it published
