A governor and N1.2b monthly ‘PR’ expenses

July 21, 2009

Sir, When it comes to reporting factually, I think most Nigerian newspapers have come of age.  This is the more reason I believe the result of the survey conducted by Nigerian Tribune newspapers as reported in their Saturday edition of July 4, 2009, page 6.

The newspaper did a thorough job. Let me quote in portion, the survey as revealed by an aide to one of the south-south state governors: “His boss sat down one day and calculated the amount of money he had spent on public relations (PR) and discovered that he commits nothing less than N1.2billion (every month) on National Assembly members, officials of anti-graft agencies, top party members from both (his) State and Abuja, journalists, presidential aides, etc”.

Why does the governor ‘bribe’ the category of persons mentioned above? The reasons could be multi-dimensional: The governor definitely must be a desperate man seeking the support of all and sundry towards some set goals; he could be desperate to cover up misdeeds by compromising some journalists; for spending money on anti-graft agencies personnel, he has something to be protected for but God in His wisdom would ensure justice visits him. The alleged receivers also should bury their heads in shame; they have allowed a blanket naming of innocent ones and therefore my suggestion to the innocent is, call Tribune to name the governor who should in turn be persuaded to name such recipients.
