Police officers illegally promoted by Okiro ordered to revert to their former ranks.

August 18, 2009

The police service commission this morning ordered about 100 policemen illegally promoted by the former Inspector General of Police Mike Okiro to revert back to their former ranks or incur its wrath. Mike Okiro had on his last day in office promoted over 100 senior police officers to their next rank without having any recourse to the police service commission.

The officers promoted are drawn mainly from the IGP's office, Forcsec, PPRO,Budget, Liason office and his other cronies on the field. A cursory look at the list shows that apart from very few officers who are really due for promotion, others have spent just a little over 4 months to 2 years.

Officers and men of the force interviewed on this stated that the concept of special promotion in all its ramification should be stopped completely because it breeds indiscipline in the force. The IGP has already directed all the affected officers to revert to the old ranks immediately and report in Uniform at the Force Headquarters for inspection. Some of the officers concerned especially in the IGP secretariat were seen this morning discussing the issue and claiming that it was not their fault at least they did not promote themselves.
