The lots that doubted the ability of the Information Minister when her ministerial portfolio was made public are now seen as good bookmakers. She started goofing too early.
First was her woefully failed “rebranding” stuff. The next was her inability to handle with tact, the Ndukwe’s NCC 2.3 GHz license sagas, whose exercise bas finally been cancelled by the President. While that was still raging, she got entangled with the outrageous N8billion upgrade contract of NTA facilities that is said to be in preparation for proper coverage of the Under-17 World Cup; now FIFA has granted AIT and BON not NTA, the broadcast right. She is trying to absolve herself from the contract controversy, but the question now is why she didn’t handle it the way of NCC license issue if she believes she was right that (NCC) way.
While the above misdeeds were still on, Dora treated us to her kind of ‘rebranding’ when he betrothed her daughter to a white guy and displayed extravagancy during the wedding ceremony. AIT had live coverage of the occasion and it is believed that she spent million for the wedding. She might not know also that it annoys many noticing her penchant for posing, at any opportunity, for photographs which constantly depicts her smiling intoxicatingly. It is like the ministerial appointment got into her head.
Even when one considers her unguarded comment as reported in the media when the Boko Haram’s leader was announced killed; her comment insinuated that it was good riddance of bad rubbish. As the Information Minister it did not immediately occur to her that had the man been allowed to live, and facing the law, more facts would have emerged to deal with the rubbish she thought was gotten rid of.
Akunyili performed creditably while at NAFDAC but this Ministry of information portfolio is a misfit that seems to be rubbishing her. She could see that for Yar’Adua assigning her the present portfolio was to finish her. It is too late now.
