Gombe State:Unsolved Political Murders Between 2003 And 2009

October 13, 2009
Recently the youth wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) recognised Governor  Muhammadu Danjuma Goje with an award for his effort in maintaining peace in the state.  As commendable as this gesture may be, many people in the state are however perplexed on how Gov Goje received such award despite glaring facts that Gombe State has recorded the worst politically motivated murders from 2003-2009 which are still unresolved till date. In all, about 70 politically inspired murders are officially recorded by police in the state.

The most notable was the murder of Hon. Isa Magaji Bangus, a staunch Christian, who was appointed as Special Adviser Political Affairs to Goje in 2003 but subsequently fell out with his boss and decamped to Action Congress (AC) party where he contested for state Assembly seat in 2007.  Mr. Bangus dissatisfied with the outcome of the charade called election in Gombe, petitioned the state Election Tribunal where he exposed monumental electoral fraud masterminded by PDP in the state. He was later strangled to death and dumped in his car for all to see on October 2007 after he was invited by Gov. Goje’s Special Adviser on Projects for a chat.  He was last seen alive with the governor’s Special Adviser on Projects. Was Bangus yet another PROJECT? Details of this gruesome murder is with the Police Command in Gombe state where it has remained like several others, unsolved.

Mr. Nasiru Keke, who being in the opposition, challenged Governor Goje. Yankalere, the political thugs that operate freely in the state, went to his house, set it ablaze with gallons of petrol.  His two sons-innocent boys- were burnt alive in the inferno while his wife and the third son escaped with serious injuries and trauma that will haunt them throughout their lifetime. No one is standing trial for this nor has anyone been arrested in connection with this.

There was also the case of Mr. Dabo Sintali who also died in mysterious circumstances.

The individuals stated above are some of the high profile cases, however, greater cases of politically inspired murders happened between Goje’s political thugs popularly called the dreaded YANKALARE.

Below, we document once again, names of those that have been killed during Goje’s tenure whose murder cases have not been solved or has anyone been detained in connection with them.

In the light of the above, we ask the following questions about the man the Youth wing of CAN gave an award for PEACE in Gombe and who has been at the helm of affairs in the state since 2003.

·       Why has governor Goje and his government kept quite all these while in these unsolved murders?

·       Has Gombe state government, direct or remote connections to these killings?

·       Why is it that nobody has been brought to book for these gruesome killings since 2003?

·       Why have the Nigerian police and all other security apparatus in the state kept quite despite the alarming but resounding outcry against these cruel and heartless murders in the state?

We are worried and concerned because those killed are indigenes of Gombe state that were brutally denied their God given lives and an opportunity to contribute to the growth of the state they loved and belonged to.

We hereby call on the   Inspector General of Police to reopen these cases which are documented in police records in Gombe Command with a view to solving these political murders in the state as well as to forestall further brutal and heartless murder of our indigenes.
