Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has called on Nigerians to rise and protest against the continued absence of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua from the country.

Addressing newsmen today in Victoria Island, Lagos, Soyinka stated that at a time like this, it was necessary for Nigerians to engage in civil disobedience in order for the authorities to do the right thing.

Soyinka also condemned the recall of Zakari Biu into the Nigerian Police. He described him as a torturer and said such a person should not have been recalled into the police.

He also berated the Nigerian government for its lackadaisical attitude towards the earthquake that occurred in Haiti, saying “a country that claimed to be the giant in Africa should have sent representatives to commiserate with the Haitian government.”

Soyinka and others under the aegis of Save Nigeria Group, had on Tuesday led a protest in Abuja to the National Assembly.

During the protest they kicked against the continued absence of Yar’Adua from the seat of power.

The group called on Yar’Adua to obey the constitution by writing a letter to the National Assembly to swear in Goodluck Jonathan as the acting president.
