Press statement on the human rights situation in Jos Nigeria

The recent arbitrary killings in Jos of defenceless women and children allegedly by Fulani cattle herdsmen under unprovoked circumstances are a cause for extreme concern.

The recent arbitrary killings in Jos of defenceless women and children allegedly by Fulani cattle herdsmen under unprovoked circumstances are a cause for extreme concern.

It is more so in the light of such similar past systemic attacks on innocent citizens of Jos. The gross human rights violations following these attacks have become uncontrollable. Lives have been lost, diced with torture, cruel inhuman and degrading treatment. Property and means of livelihood have been destroyed and generally the mayhem following these sporadic attacks leaves the city dwellers and it environ in dismay.

As a signatory to the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, the Federal Republic of Nigeria is obliged to respect the rights therein and take all measures to guarantee same. The Federal Government of Nigeria is therefore called upon

1. To ensure that peace, security and stability returns to Jos in order to guarantee the protection and preservation of life and property as well as the well being of the people and their environment.
2. To put in place measures to anticipate and prevent future conflicts.
3. To Ensure speedy investigations to identify the perpetrators and bring them to trial.
