The EFCC Declares Ibori "Wanted"

April 12, 2010

It has now been officially declared by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that, in response to public persistence regarding the matter, the EFCC is formally engaged in an investigation of the alleged corruption perpetrated by James Onanefe Ibori, the former Delta State governor.

According to the EFCC, an official letter was sent to Ibori requesting his presence at the EFCC offices on March 23, 2010.  Ibori failed to show up.  However, in a press release dated today, April 13, Ibori denies ever receiving such a letter, and states that he is now and has been available for questioning, and that by declaring him wanted, the EFCC is making him a victim of “political persecution.”

However, as SaharaReporters has previously reported, it appears that EFCC has not actively engaged in the search for Ibori as their reports would lead the public to believe.  Two weeks ago, Ibori declared in his newspaper The Daily Independent that according to the EFCC leadership, Jonathan aides had been pressuring the EFCC to crack down on Ibori.
